What are you talking about? The guy got 24 years for raping his 10 year old son-in-law. Did you take into consideration the fact that it was a child that was raped and what is legally considered an incestuous relationship. 24 years too harsh??? Its a 20 year average sentance for child abuse, plus 4 for attempted murder (5 years being the minimum sentance), seems to me he already got a year off.mikkel wrote:
They should be imprisoned, obviously, but sentencing anyone to 24 years in prison for rape is preposterous. A more sane approach, in my opinion, would be an eight to ten year sentencing for the rape charge. I struggle to find a rational argument for the current theme of filling up prisons to capacity, to the point of turning down convicts for incarceration, simply to keep inmates stagnating in underfunded environments so conducive to criminal indoctrination that many of them end up more criminal than they were when they entered the system.Hurricane2k9 wrote:
mikkel what do you suggest we do with these sorts of people?
I find it difficult to believe that the prospect of spending 24 years in jail would deter anything beyond a fraction of the criminals willing to carry out crimes punishable by imprisonment for ten years. I also cannot imagine that anything more than an insignificant portion of the people who fail to be dissuaded from repeating their crimes after ten years would reach a point of dissuasion at any point in their future.
I am of the opinion that sentences of this length do vastly more harm to society by overpopulating prisons and negatively affecting inmates on shorter terms, than what would be done were the sentences to be halved.

Actually attempted murder in the US has a minimum sentence of 5 years prison. Rape is a little over 9 and a half years years (117 months). In this case though, it was an incestious rape of a 10 year old child. Child rape has an average sentance 20 years prison.

The continual process of resolutions is how the U.N. operates. Just because paperwork and rhetoric continues onward, it doesn't necessarily mean invasion is a good idea.
Granted, I realize that a lot of the opposition to the war came from countries profiting from the Oil for Food Scandal.
The sad truth of the matter is that morals don't usually make a difference when it comes to entering war or avoiding it. Money is what usually talks the loudest.
We had plenty of war profiteers pushing for the invasion of Iraq, while countries like France had plenty of profiteers in the Oil for Food scandal.
My argument is not moral or about resolutions. I simply believe that the costs of this war to our country (in money, lives, and reputation) were much higher than anything we've gained from it.
At the same time, the invasion would not have been possible had it not been for Bush's exploitation of fear. While most of us here realize that Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11, the average American at the time was easily misled into making this false connection.

Than whatever you write about please dont go on about immigration, I think FEOS put it correctly. I understand racial profiling is nasty but there doesnt seem to be a better solution (so they say and Im no expert). Strict airport security in my eyes is good, no? Unless you are a terrorist. Yes, its annoying but recently I passed through 2 European airports and literally walked passed security, with the guards more concerned with thier piss up the night before and about what happened in the last Dr. House episode, while neglecting the monitor and their half assed use of magic wands.haffeysucks wrote:

as for the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, i just found that on wiki and threw that on there as well. i haven't actually read up on it.
what about the death count then? i can't seem to find any solid, official death count.
as for the immigration part, i'm sure i totally buy into it. yes, i generalized completely - i was thinking of those damn US Customs officials who seem to be so happy to racially profile people. (well, that's what everyone seems to say. i myself never see or experience anything like that at the airports, and i fly a lot.) maybe i didn't exactly have immigration in mind.
i kind of expanded both of them to include the anti-terrorist movement and the entire Cold War.

Last week I attended a swearing in ceremony in DC. I can tell you a rough count of the origins of 115 new US citizens. 20 from Honduras, 30 from El Salvador, 50 from Ethiopia, 2 from Iran, 1 from Korea, 2 from Japan, 3 from Australia, 3 from the UK and 3 from Canada. The rest were mainly indiviuals from all over the world. Unusualy there were none from Mexico, but never-the-less I was surprised with a very diverse group of people. It kind of changed my persective on immigration in the US as opposed to the likes of Canada and Australia for example.

Look, its as simple as this: If everybody stole software, than there would be no money to be made from it. Hence no one would actually produce it, therefore no one could have access to it anyway.
I personally dont think that a religious figure should be making any political statements no matter how agreeable they may seem. Never-the-less, and considering that we are talking about the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, it sure isnt going to stop any time soon. The fact is that the Pope and his church are extremely political. This is very evident in Italy where many laws (even though there is supposed to be a separtation of church and state) are very much influenced by the Catholic church. Many controversies in Italian law imposed by the church dictate store operating hours, church coverage on national tv, divorce law, and many others. There is a constant battle there between church and state. One significant loss by the church in recent times was to remove crosses from hospital rooms. The same is now in debate over class rooms and school halls.
Mohammed Ali and Pele. Im leaning towards Pele though simply because football (soccer) is the worlds biggest sport. Many kids today dont even know Mohammed Ali but have no doubt to who Pele is.
