I've been thinking on moving to linux for quite some time. I'm on dual boot already, but would like to switch to linux completely. Gaming is really the only hindrance here. Cedega looks promising, but I haven't tried it out yet - I don't like paying for something that may not work.misconfiguration wrote:
With some careful configuration and time you can get any game to work, I'm even playing BF2 on my clans server right now; I had to manually update PB but hey it's working.
I've a few questions, if you don't mind.
Which version of Cedega/wine are you using?
Does PB let you play on any server, or are there servers where PB kicks you? I hear that was a problem at some point atleast with Cedega.
What kind of FPS do you get on windows and what in linux side for BF2?
Which version of Cedega do you have, and what are the FPS differences? According to their web pages, atleast BF2 is supported.Thoruz wrote:

Hm... Allow me to doubt those figures. Linux is excellent, but it can't do magic...misconfiguration wrote:

I'd say that Linux is getting there gradually. It's not yet for everybody, but distros like Ubuntu are getting very, very close.misconfiguration wrote:

If a system needs opening a root terminal to get it configured and working, it's not there yet. Personally root terminal is not an issue, but I'm afraid I - and probably you, too - are in a marginal minority.

I have a very valuable Word document template (its a corporate proposal) that I've been using for a couple of years but its got one nasty problem: it has a mind of its own. Its constantly autoformatting everything. For example if I bold a paragraph it will go ahead and bold every other similarly aligned paragraph in the document. If I control-Z it undoes the autoformat and leaves my desired modification, but I'm getting sick of this.
How do I turn off all the "smart" editing help on a word document? I don't want anymore autoformatting of any kind.
My version of word is Word 2003
"Format" menu -> "Styles and Formatting..." opens the styles task pane. Then select the style of the paragraph. From the pull down menu of the style in the task pane, select "Modify...". There you'll find the checkbox.
It's set per style, so you need to go through each paragraph, heading etc. style and uncheck it.

If you have a separate firewall box (e.g. in your ADSL box or similar), allowing outgoing traffic is not enough.drummer4breeze wrote:
I've checked my sygate firwall - allows access to core.exe
I've also checked my router, all ports allowed outgoing.
You need to set up port forwarding to your box. This means, that any incoming connection attempts to those ports from the internet (like EA's servers) will need to be redirected over to your PC by your router.
Usually this happens by defining the port ranges and protocols to be forwarded, and then the destination host in the internal network - your PC's IP address. The exact configuration details vary between routers, so you need to take a peek in your manual. Or post the exact make and model of your router. However, if you're able to play BF2, you've propably already done some port forwards.

Could you tell the exact network configuration you have there. Which are connected to which devices, and how (wired/wireless)? What IP subnets do you have, if any?
When trafficing to the net, does your computer's traffic have to go over any wireless links?
Do you have static or dynamic IPs?

The position of the subwoofer DOES matter.
The reason is reflections from the walls. You will get spots in the room, where the sound waves cancels each other out, basically resulting in no low frequency sounds at all. Sucks, if you happen to be sitting in one of those spots. Also, you get spots where low frequencies get amplified because the waves are summing.
Put a source with lots of very low sounds playing (music, or a movie with heavy sound effects like LotR). Place your sub where your head is when you normally listen. Then move your head around in the room (walking around helps ), and find the spot where the low frequencies sound the best. That'll be the spot where you want to place your sub.
How do I know? This happens in my living room in an annoying way. I had real trouble to find the right spot for my sub. In the default positions of the sub, the acustics (shape of the space) resulted in practically no low frequency sounds at the listening spot, no matter how high I cranked my sub's volume. Move a bit away (like bit down the corridor - I've no door there, it's one open space all the way to kitchen), and I'd get huge sounds.

Are you overclocking? If, turn everything back down to defaults and see if you still get ctd's.
Windows doesn't have scheduled scans like that like Linux has.
The reason could be as simple as a unclean windows shutdown (e.g. crash, cold reboot), which may result in chkdsk kicking in.
P3lvicthrust, is your PC a recent one? Is the HD an IDE or a SATA disk? Whats the motherboard, and its chipset?
If you've SATA and nForce4 chipset in your mobo, that may also be the problem. That combination may cause data corruption, if you're using the nVidia chipset drivers. Use Windows' own drivers instead.

That's only unranked. As posted above, you can't run ranked servers on your own.

You shouldn't need to specify it. The patcher should find it itself, based on a registry key that contains the install dir (see HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\EA Games\Battlefield 2, there should be InstallDir key, with full path to your bf2.exe).spin wrote:

Have you by any chance done any rearrangements to your drives? Reordering, adding new ones etc? That may sometimes cause incorrect drive letters to be assigned, pushing everything off the cliff.
7950GX2 is in essence two 7900GT's in SLI. Two 7900GTX's in SLI will score better because they're clocked higher (both GPU and RAM) than 7950GX2. 7950 is clocked around 500-550MHz, 7900GTX is 650MHz. Memclocks are 600MHz vs. 800MHz. Can't remember possible differences in the cores (number of pipes etc.)...<[onex]>Headstone wrote:

You cannot compare them like that, it is quite obvious that in testing the 7950 is going to out perform the 7900 hands down merely because it has twice the ram FFS 512mb compared to 1024 no matter how you look at is going to be more, but sometime more doesnt not mean better. If you are to compare the two cards for an overall performance porpotionatly to their quantity of ram, the single 7900 out-performs the 7950 hands down. If you have the need for more than 512mb ram for anything more than greed and bragging rights then a set up with 2x 7900gtx in SLI will provide much better results.Kmarion wrote:
Unfortunatly every benchmark I have seen tends to disagree with you. I would say lets compare some benchmarks but it would not be apples to apples regarding the rest of the system specs.
Here is a direct comparison to your claim that the single 7900 gtx performs as good or better.
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/7900vs7950/4
It seems to be on the more advanced games at higher resolutions the 7950 pulls ahead significantly. Considering I have a 24 inch ws monitor I usually run games at the highest res. I can see that the 7950 is the card to go with.
+1
Also, since 7950 is nothing more than an integrated SLI solution, it has as much vid ram as two separate 7900's in SLI. That is, 512MB, not 1GB.
The reason 7950 is so popular is that it gives the power of an SLI solution in one single card. Yes, on lower resolutions it's not worth it, but shows it's muscles in higher resolutions. Think about single 7900GTX vs. 2x7900GT's in SLI.
If the 7950GX2 had two 7900GTX cores cloced at 650MHz, the 7950 would have the potential to beat two separate 7900GTX's in SLI due to the fact that the interconnecting can be optimized better, and you get 16x PCIe into the card instead of 8x in two cards. This is good because if core #1 needs alot of data NOW, and core#2 is busy with the data it has, it can benefit from the 16x bus. In SLI system, the cores are always bound by the 8x bus. This is however theoretical, as I think at the moment even the 8x bus is never the bottleneck...

Yes, POE2 doesn't interfere with vanilla BF2. It's like SF, launched with separate shortcut.

It has nothing to do with whether people can use all unlocks or not. Try looking at different lines of code.
And it's also possible that it's a dedicated server only option, not something you can setup while using the in-game hosting. I set on my own computer a dedicated server for a LAN and had a lot more control over things than if I used the in-game hosting.
It's ofc very possible I'm doing something wrong. Has anybody succeeded in getting the rank and unlocks working in dedicated unranked servers?

It's total over the entire round. You can die and then continue. Or better, get out, repair it and continue.
Never had that coming, and error messages are too often misleading... But for me that error message sounds like the BF2 game cannot connect to the account server...
Do you have any firewalls installed? Application ones or e.g. in your ADSL box?
In the case you have an application firewall, you need to give BF2 the right to access the network again after reinstalling. So check that.
In case of an external firewall, check you have the necessary ports opened and forwarded.
Hope it helps.

Unleashing your rage on an inanimate object is a completely different problem than inflicting violence on your children. These don't necessarily go hand-in-hand, so you probably don't need to worry about the safety of your children - provided you your self don't have violent history (e.g. abusive parents), or some mental disorders. You can have those memories running together with pretty high confidence, but at what timings, is completely another question.
As a rule of thumb, all the memories must be run at the timings of the slower memory. So in your case 5-5-5-15. You didn't specify the T timing of your 512's, but the slower one is again the one that matters.
Also, adding DIMMs to the bus may have adverse affects. Depending on the quality of your DIMMs (both new and old), you may be able to run with tighter timings, but if you're out of luck, you may need to drop the timings even below the slower one's timings to get the computer stable. Especially your ability to OC (if you've done that), will most likely drop.
Also, the make and model of memories matters. Avoid mixing DIMMs from different manufacturers, and even different product lines. If you have high-performance memory, don't buy value RAM.

It allows one to get inside the walls of an otherwise unaccessible building.
Because the building is not modeled for people to be inside, only the outside of the wall is inpenetrable. But anyone who is inside, can see, shoot and move out freely.
Which in practice makes the ones inside invulnerable to fire from outside, but allows them to kill others outside.
In 1.3, EA added a kill zone in the hotel under the flag.
Why didn't they extend the kill zone to cover the whole inside of the hotel, and other buildings in different maps, too? Would've solved all wall glitch problems for good. Simple principle: You shouldn't be there, so die.

EA admits that the advertising will only work on some games and [Need for Speed] is one of them. Another will be the upcoming war game, Battlefield 2142, scheduled for release later this year.
Not having played the beta, does it have similar popup after you have signed in as in BF2 in the main view? That might be a potential place for the adverts.
Having a paid-for application function as an advertising platform does sound a bit intrusive to me, but hey, it's EA. I might be able to live with it IF it's not animated flashes AND I can close the popup immediately, without being forced to view it for X seconds...
Or, if I can get the game for free, I can view the adverts for 15 seconds each time. Even flash animations.
