A few sources of the same story.
I think Chavez is an attention-getter, same tier as Ahmadinejad, but for a few reasons I want to take a second to think about why that could be true.

First, a tectonic weapon makes sense. Level a large area without rockets or explosions or fallout? Nice! And they've mentioned it before too. I won't lie, I only learned this today but it seems to be a real quote... In 1997 Defense Secretary William Cohen expressed concern over countries using an "eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves.” Well if thirteen fucking years ago that's a public concern, you can bet the worlds most zealous military would have their hands on those secrets and more by now. They probably did then.

So. You have this big cool gun and a few kids you wanna shoot. Afghanistan? Iran? ... anyone else in the future who dare fuck around?
Not having tried it out, Haiti makes sense as a nice close test target with not a lot to lose and no impact on the rest of the world. Easy to help clean up, they're in our backyard, and maybe like Chavez is saying, though I agree less with his angle and more with the test-run side of it, we're using it to position ourselves in Haiti for whatever reason.

That bill introduced in 2001 by the brilliant Dennis Kucinich mentions tectonic weapons amongst other 'exotic weapons systems,' and though that's certainly no evidence, the bill sounds like it's written by a man who knows a bit about what's up.

Tesla once claimed to have invented an earthquake machine. Yes the mythbusters debunked it in the first season but they had no idea what they were doing.

I just... see this making a little bit of sense. Thoughts?

Another stupid Windows 7 question. I'm in system information, in the system drivers section. I would like to change a particular driver to "On" and "Automatic" but I cannot. I don't seem to be able to manipulate this list at all. Is there somewhere I can manually start a driver?

Yes, admittedly, certain companies stand to profit from the development of alternative power sources or attempts at environmental regulation. That is capitalism. And if it is not capitalism, if we remove capitalism from the equation entirely, then that money will go into America's pockets, and I dunno if you've been listening but we kinda need some money. Let me remind you some of the worst "rent-grabbers" around are major oil companies who stand to lose more with the "green" push than anyone else. So shall we call it a changing of the guard?

In alleging conspiracy for profit against the scientists, and doing so by dismissing all of science, you are, by default, dismissing the severity of these problems. The solutions proposed to solve problems with global warming go hand in hand with what will be required of humankind if we want to solve these problems.

If you are so opposed to following this path (the path of science) toward a solution, I'm interested in hearing what your solution is.

They get the scent of profit to be made and they'll be all over your little environmental movement in a heartbeat. They'll corrupt it so badly that those of you that actually believe climate change is happening will be sold down the river just like relic merchants preyed on the religiously devout in the middle ages and the way charlatans would sell medicine to hypochondriacs before the FDA was created. Question everything and trust nothing that the government proposes. Pelosi, Obama, Feinstein and all of their cronies stand to make billions of dollars if they can get their climate bills passed through the senate.

Thank you for describing corruption to me. Now apply it to the topic at hand and explain to me where this money is coming from and how exactly it will end up in the scientists' and/or politicians' pockets.

Poor preparation certainly exacerbated the problems NO and the southern gulf had.
I went to Biloxi, Mississippi a year after the storm to visit my mother's side of the family, and all of them were very critical of the government's management of prevention and relief efforts. Keep in mind most of these people are staunchly conservative and the last people to criticize the Man.

But yeah, a hurricane - a particularly brutal hurricane - caused the problem, not the army.

Not necessarily. I'm far from an economic expert and while I like a lot of what Cap and Trade offers, I doubt it will last as a system if it's ever implemented.
This discussion has been about whether or not Global Warming is indeed an observed trend or rather, an elaborate hoax involving a lot of people. It has not been about solutions to global warming or the political aspect.

Someone who really cares about climate change understands that Global Warming is an effect of the mistreatment of Earth. Even in the unlikely scenario that the effects of GW are entirely independent of mankind (though I don't know how you can look past the near physical certainty of the greenhouse effect) it is undeniable that the airborne pollution on this planet is growing steadily worse.

I can see the only possible motive for conspiracy being to convince an obviously very stubborn and unobservant public to make earth a cleaner place. And if that is indeed the case, then I'm glad to know that the first legitimate global scientific conspiracy is about doing better for Earth. But lets grow up a few years and not be such victims. They're not all out to get us.

This honestly works much better with a soccer game than it does with (real)football games, which started it. In footy, every player gets some action, whereas in football, you pretty much have to be a running back or quarterback to make this style of gameplay fun at all.

Fifa 10 kicks. fucking. ass. by the way. I've always loved soccer games... why soccer and hockey - both such incredibly boring sports (i'm just antagonizing. they bore me but I get that I just don't understand) - make the best video games, I don't know, but they're phenomenal.

I do prefer the regular franchise (or whatever it's called... I'm not gonna reboot in windows just to check) mode in FIFA, but the Be A Pro mode is a nifty diversion. Plus I've always wanted to be a black Spaniard and this helps me fulfill that fantasy.

I had over 30 family members in that storm. My family lost 5 houses, numerous jobs, and massive amounts of material wealth for which they will never receive any compensation. Currently ranking at #1 on my video-game experiences of all time (this is highly subject to change, and seems to with every new release...) was me, last night, playing with my 3 roommates around our table, on Expert, and I was reallllllllly high as well. My brain exploded more frequently than did the brains of the zombies I was shooting. And Ffghting a tank... ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh maann....

Basically I love this game... 100 percent.

Okay i've figured this much out. Now that I think about it, i haven't heard my computer's fans go on high in a while... maybe that's selective memory, but it works out with my theory. When I try to set my fans on high, they go for a short period of time, varying anywhere between half a second to five seconds before they slow down again. I can click "apply" again and they start, then shut off quickly.

If I set it to "force fans on high," the fans go on high, then periodically, like i said above, every 1-5 seconds about, they jump back down to low, however, because it's set to force on high, it goes right back to high.

This leads me to believe that some other program on my system is telling the fans to slow down. Does anyone else think I might be right?

Alright well, my core temp is 79 C. Ouch.
Speedfan indicates all my temperatures are way too high.

But for the life of me, i can't figure out where fan control is.

What games does it get choppy in?

If it's BF2, then it's not that your hardware isn't up to the job - unless you're trying to run with absolutely everything maxed...

Even that's just a 7900GS, it should handle BF2 fine - my AthlonXP3200+ with AGP X800XT PE, 2GB RAM handles bf2 on mostly highs no problem.

So, if you getting choppyness in BF2, I'd first try deleting the BF2 shader cache, then defrag (ideally with a decent (i.e. not windows built-in) defragger)), then run BF2, load into a server (you need to get to the fully loaded, ready to spawn, point) then immediately quit and defrag again.

If that doesn't help, try uninstalling bf2, then defrag, then reinstall, then defrag, then run, immediately set graphics settings, join server, quit, defrag.

If that doesn't help, try a complete reformat and reinstall of windows et al.

If it's any other game(s), you'll have to wait for someone with a similar setup and the same game(s) to tell you whether choppyness is to be expected or not...

Also, if you do end up doing a reformat and reinstall, then consider really pairing back on what other software you install - maybe even run a separate partition with separate 'gaming' install of your OS - ideally, for best gaming performance, you want just OS + essential drivers + minimal utils (eg vent/xfire) + games - and nothing else - well, except AV and Firewall if you're not behind a hardware firewall, but ideally be behind a hardware firewall and don't use either software AV or Firewall - of course, that's not the best set up for general use, hence the suggestion to use a second partition and OS install just for gaming.

The games I get the choppiness in are TF2 and Insurgency (a source mod), as well as Fifa 09, which was a surprise, and MVP Baseball 05 (but running a mod with a slight graphical improvement) which was certainly a surprise. I'll get the lag in practically anything the least bit graphically intensive, which is why I think it's a problem with overheating. I notice no choppiness or poor performance when running multiple programs for music, as I often do, because I make music.  I can run Starcraft just fine (I'd throw this away if i couldn't...) so it's not something that affects EVERYTHING... It's as though my computer is performing (much) worse than it should, after about 5 minutes of working fine. In TF2, with all settings minimum, and the system I described above, and no other programs running... I will frequently spike to 2-5 FPS, then back up to 10-15, then down, then if things calm down, back up to 60+ (but the latter become increasingly rare, the longer the game has been running).

I used to be able to play TF2 on highish settings at 3o+FPS, with an IM program and iTunes running, just fine. I liked that. I've never really cared about graphics, and so long as I'm getting 30-40fps, I'm fine with it... but the spikes make the games playable for 20-30 minutes before I just get frustrated and quit.

I'm going to reformat as soon as I get my windows CD from my parents house, so hopefully that will solve my issue. If not, I'm going to assume it HAS to be overheating, in which case, I'm slightly screwed, cuz my laptop isn't easy to dust out or replace fans on...

Oh well, that's what technology gives you right? It's strange that we put up with it... Though we wouldn't if it wasn't worth it.

Oh, and I've defragged, run CCleaner, made sure my registry is all fine, I've virus scanned with AVG and Avast, I've run spybot, I've spent hours myself going through and deleting erroneous files and such, I've read hours worth of tutorials on how to deep-clean your PC... and my games still get choppy.

I'm optimistic though. And thank you all.

So basically, with the upcoming releases of Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3, I want my computer to work right.

It's been annoying... I'll play a game, and it will run fine for 5-10 minutes, and then it will get very choppy. My amateur mind immediately assumed that overheating could be a problem.
My friend thinks I should reinstall windows, or preferably reformat.

What do you think, BF2s? Also... I remember someone here suggesting a utility which monitored the temps and also had a fan-control utility... but I can't remember the name. I could google it, and did, but nothing rang a bell, so I just figured I'd ask again.

I've have, and am very happy with, a Dell Inspiron E1750. 17 inches, and it feels like a real computer rather than a strange electric picture book.

It's still perfectly portable (anyone who went to high school should be able to handle the weight on their back/shoulder), it's decently powerful... My roommate has a 15 inch Inspiron, and it's just too small for me.

Okay, I have the Curve, so I don't know if it's the same, but there should be a selectable speaker icon on the home page or in the apps menu. That is your "profiles" icon, and it lets you select quickly a certain profile of rings or notifications, and if you set your notifications while on a different profile than you are currently using, those that you set will not be the ones you hear.

The manual is pretty damn good, so try using that. But yeah... fool around with the profiles a bit and get to understand them. They might change your life.

Thanks for all the responses. I gotta go dig up two of my old 512 sticks... they worked last time I checked.

Our plan is to test the method of booting on one stick of RAM, and if that doesn't work, we're gonna reinstall windows, and we'll see from there...

BIOS is totally accessible, and everything runs just fine until windows tries to boot, which leads me to believe maybe the ram being screwy led to one too many crashes, which caused windows to fritz out.

Again, thanks a ton, and I'll update you all when we figure it out.

Well, he got the computer from Dell, and he's had problems since day 1, and we finally just decided to check inside, and they paired the 1Gs with the 512s.

Also, the 1Gb sticks are not identical... they are both samsung, but they are not of the exact same make. Could this be problematic?
Even worse, the two 512 sticks are not even made by the same company.

Is Dell really that stupid?
