What's the advantage of paying for the retail copy? I was just wondering as I'm probably gonna go to Gamestop or Pre-Purchase it on Steam soon, so I'm wondering if there's any significant advantages.

And if I buy retail, it'll still be activated through Steam, right? That's how it was when I bought CSS/DOD:S/HL2:DM.

GameStop and Steam both have it at $45 for pre-orders...

Retail gets you the pretty CD case that friends can browse through

That's about it, and not worth it if Steam is running a $5/off sale.(Hypothetically)

I'd go for steam, you can get it the moment it comes out.

If you get it through Steam just to get it ASAP, traffic is going to be high and the download will probably be pretty slow. Up to you really, once you register the game to your Steam account, I'm pretty sure you can download it whenever so the CD will probably go to waste afterward. Really up to you, probably won't make a difference.

With retail you have a box and can install the .gcfs offline. You still enter a CD-key so you have the game on steam. If they both cost the same, go retail.

Retail gets you an awesome box.

In the UK, retail will get you the game a few days later (due to EU release date which is a few days later than the Steam release), but will also be about £6 cheaper. Quite a big difference.

I'm getting it retail, just like how I get all my games.
I've never purchased off steam.

Retail. Box, disc, and manual are part of the gaming experience for me.

Steam. Can't be arsed to run to the store between school, driver's ed and work.

Besides, like other Valve releases, L4D ought to be preloaded. You'll have a few days at least, maybe more, to preload it. Note: With steam you do in fact get the game earlier then retail.

TF2 style pre-release beta in the weeks before release FTW .

If they have one. They said they might, so its still up in the air as to whether there'll be one or not. I personally think there won't after all the testing thats been done, but you never know.

Pre-releases of Valve games have been going on for a lot longer then TF2. I'd be very shocked if there was no pre-release just for the sake of principal.

With TF2 it was a beta though. We were atually 'testing' the game...

Good to know. I didn't pre-order TF2, only stating that preloads had been around since HL2, CS:S, and so on.

Speaking of which, pre-loading L4D now anyways.

Steam.
With retail, you still have to download and install the patch.
But with steam, it preloads with the patch already

Should be getting the money this weekend. I guess it'll be a toss-up.

Just go with whichever you can find cheapest .

For us in the UK it was a complete no-brainer with that amazon offer.

Same price in both places...

The plus side of getting it retail is that I can download it faster, but might not get it the day of release.

The plus side of getting it on Steam is that I can get it instantly, but it'll download slower.

Tbh it's looking like Steam right now, cuz I wouldn't be able to get it until Wednesday.

Well yeah the downside to the amazon offer is that the retail release in the UK isn't until the 21st. And then you have to wait for it to get posted. But I don't mind.

Cheaper > few days delay

if you've already downloaded the demo on steam, I don't see much of a reason to not just buy it there...
