Wasn't it just the fires that killed a ton of Japanese in Tokyo, cos the whole damn place was built of wood? Anyway, I think the nuke decision was the correct one. The point of the second nuke was to assure the Japanese that US was capable of producing more than one of these "wonder weapons" and that it wasn't just a one-off thing.
And of course it is now easy to analyze and speculate on the events, knowing all that we do about every side of the conflict. However, the leaders back then didn't have all the facts, didn't know what was going in the heads of their adversaries, and tried to play it safe to minimize their own casualties. More than that, they were trying to win a war that already took millions of lives, and not a popularity contest.

To anyone who thinks that M95 has more bullet drop, consider this: M95 is a .50 cal weapon, with much more power than the M24 or the L96. Therefore, more power = higher effective shooting distance = less bullet drop over a measured distance (say 0 to 200m) than the less powerful weapons. Jeez, it's not fucking rocket science.
I don't know what to write... I live in Finland, but am Russian. So I guess I must cover both.
Finland:
1. Taxation = very high. Up to 60% of pay, depending on how much you earn. It is impossible to get rich like you can in the States, for instance. That alone isn't that bad as long as the money is spent on good causes, but supporting bums and alcoholics isn't my idea of a good cause.
2. The drunk Finnish assholes that travel to Russia and Estonia just for the free booze and then make complete and utter asses out of themselves and their nation by puking, pissing, shitting and passing out in their own filth in cultural and public places of the said countries, much to the disgust of the locals. I mean, ask anyone about what they picture a Finn like in Russia and Estonia, and they'll say that a Finn is generally someone lying face down in a pool of his or hers own puke. That alone makes me ashamed for Finland.
That's about it, apart from the weather and the short sailing season, but that doesn't really count as giving Finland a bad name.
As for Russia... Hmm, where to start. Too much crap, honestly.
1. Corruption, total and all-prevasive. It is everywhere, govenment money squandered, investments pissed away, money that could be used to improve the lot of an ordinary Russian citizen just ending up in the pocket of some bureaucrat.
2. The selfish attitude that partially stems from the above problem of corruption. Nobody is doing anything for me, so why do anything for anyone else? So the people live in a crumbling society, whining and bitching that no-one is doing anything about it while doing nothing about anything themselves. Of course, some are trying to make a difference, but they are very, very, VERY few.
3. The undertones of racism and antisemitism in the mind of an ordinary Russian that just keep getting stronger. I am not talking about the educated minority here, but your ordinary factory worker, truck driver, general labourer. There have been numerous cases of murders commited by racist bands of thugs, killing foreign exchange students that happend to have a darker colour of skin than they do. And those cases are on the rise.
Those I guess are the main problems that came into my mind. I don't really have a problem with Putin, and I do think that Russia needs a tough president like him to put the country on the right track.

Yes, Israel pretty much is the only country in the middle-east that seems to be a true ally of US.
Let's review the situation a little bit... Over 30 Billion dollars was given to Egypt from the mid 70's to the mid 90's, and that's barely kept them neutral. Syria is making some political overtures to the US, I believe, and Pakistan's Musharraff (sp?) is sorta playing the ally, even though the majority of his subjects are against it. Saudi Arabia is also an ally officially, but the public opinion there is overwhelmingly against it, naturally.
Also, learn to spell and do your research before posting with the big boys, ok buddy? Cultivating an educated opinion that boils down to something other than just "Bush sukz, roflmao" would help, too.

Well, here are a few links to translations...

Here's a link to a Hadith database, too...

Some "fun" quotes can be found in Quran, quotes that make any apologist a mite uncomfortable while explaining in no uncertain terms the ideology behind militant Islam.

Yes! That's exactly what it looked like, it was smaller and appeared slimmer than an M16! Thanks, Cap!
Oh lord, how can you even play with a Radeon 9250... Just buy a new gfx card, get a cheap 6600 for a 100$, still way better than that old piece of shit. Or if you don't have a 100$, get a used card for 50$, you'll probably end up with a Radeon 9600 at least. Dude, honestly...
Hmm, strange, that happened to me on Wake a few days ago, with Patch 1.2...
Uh, right. The poorest bum on the streets of Philadelphia lives better than your average ~1800€ /mth European? I think you should take your head out of your arse before you suffocate.
Yeah, we (the U.S.S.R., I am Russian) only killed 1000 times more people in Gulags.
Besides, it can be argued that the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki prevented the need for invasion of Japan itself, which would have surely been much more disastrous in the long term.
Oh, and comparing military leaders from different centuries is inane. Plus, it is kinda foolish to use an arguement that amounts to saying that because France had a great military leader in the 1800's they are military geniouses now. Dude, honestly.

The South Vietnamese forces bombed the village in question. Also, do some of your own research, the sources are at the bottom of the page, search the web, read a few books, etc...
I recommend you do some research on the subject before accusing the US forces of defeat in Vietnam. The soldiers were betrayed by the political machine and the public opinion rather than by their own efficiency. Here are some interesting facts & statistics about the Vietnam war... http://www.vhfcn.org/stat.htm
Oh, I think I was confusing the M16A4 (image below) with the SCAR's. Sorry - didn't know that they came with a handle under the barrel.
Oh... So the good old stuff is still in use, eh? Anyway, I saw some weird guns with handles under the barrel just like SCAR's have, in news fotage... Perhaps the troops in question were a part of some special unit then.
Well, I think that we can pretty much guarantee that not only will the EU states not be offering to help Israel out, but that they will condemn the bombings in no uncertain terms, maybe even taking some sort of punishing measures (i.e. maybe some sort of limited economic sanctions) against Israel. Oh, and without offering any realistic alternatives either.
As for the US... That's the 40 Million dollar question. On one hand, all US has to do is say that "We stand by Israel" after the strikes, and that alone might avert a possible all-out war in the region. However if the bluff is called the US military will have a tough time stretching its forces even further, what with the situation in Iraq and all. And Iran just might use the Israeli attack to justify an attempt at an invasion of Iraq, since we all know that Iran wouldn't mind taking control in Iraq and that Iran is financially and logistically doing its utmost to prevent stabilisation in the region.

I just wanted to ask you people who have served/are serving in Iraq about the weapons currently in use by the US forces. I must admit that as late as 2003 - 2004 I had this rather antiquated picture that all the US troops (I'm talking about your ordinary "grunts" here) use M-16's or M-4's, kinda like they did in Vietnam. However, after watching countless hours of news footage, I noticed some rather strange-looking (to someone used to the good ol' M-16 made famous by countless Vietnam movies) new guns in the hands of US infantry, and later on to my surprise stumbled on them in BF2. So my question is, does infantry generally use SCAR-L's or H's in day to day situations or what? What is the basic weapon issued by the US military for deployment abroad?
Oh, and I guess answers by anybody knowledgable on this matter are welcome, not just the people that have served in Iraq...

I used to be a G36E / SCAR-L "whore", but lately I've been experimenting with other weapons, and I must say that AK's are great, once you learn to shoot accurately with them. PKM obviously rules after the 1.2, but I can't help feeling guilty everytime after using it... Feels almost a bit like cheating, to me!
It never fails to surprise me how ordinary people turn into raving conspiracy fanatics... The whole 9/11 event, when viewed with even an ounce of common sense, is exactly what it looks like, i.e. a terrorist strike. Why, when presented with reams of valid evidence, would normally rational people grasp at straws and screech "Conspiracy!"? Does it make them feel more important perhaps? More knowledgeable?
If Israel bombs the plants / rescearch centres, then be it. I think it would be a better altertnative to powerless UN bitching and gradual escalation of the conflict while the Iranians cackle and gloat at the Western impotence to do anything but whine. Besides, there can be little negotiation with a nutcase like Ahmadinejad, who has given no ground during the negotiations and just expects everyone to bow before his holy will. I say the sooner the Israelis bomb the nuke plants the better. No-one else has the balls for it, except maybe US, but they are tied down in too many places at the moment. And Europe? Pfft. Whiny bitches all, too afraid to fart lest they insult somebody.
As for the "Peaceful nuclear power" arguement touted by Iran, I'd have to say it's utter bullshit. The country is sitting on one of the largest natural gas reservoirs in the world, it's got oil coming out of every hole, and you're telling me it's going to spend billions in order to build a few nuclear power plants it doesn't need? Right.

I'm new to the thread, just wanted to post my own opinon. Here goes...
Anyway, my favorite tank of all times is the israeli Merkava! It's awesome. Here's some info and pics on [url=http://www.defense-update.com/directory/merkava4.htmMerkava MK4[/url]. It's a sexy beast... I'm not saying, however, that it's a jack of all trades. It might be a tad slower than some (60 Kmh on the road), and heavier (~70t), but none the less maintains superb maneuverability. That is because Israel puts the emphasis on protecting the crew of the tank, a valid design philosophy for a country with a limited populations surrounded by populous and aggressive neighbours.
That was, of course, just an opinion. In any case, when it comes to the topic of the thread, i.e. the comparison of a T-72 to a M1A2, it's plain old bullshit. Come on, one'd have to be retarded to put those two on the same level. T-90, I could understand. But a T-72, no matter of what modification, is a lame duck compared to the Abrams.

I'm a student of marketing & economics. In the summer time I sail, logged well over 1500Nm last year. Sadly, the season is short here in Finland. In the dark, cold days between August and May I generally suffer from clinical depression.
The poor "opressed" inmates in Guantanamo have it way, way better than prisoners in your average friendly Russian prison. Not to mention a middle-eastern prison... *shudder*
Yeah, and I think most people with native english skills on this forum need a few grammar lessons themselves!
About the F-117 being shot down over Yugoslavia, it's true. HOWEVER, one must take into account that it was the only one shot down during the entire course of the war, and that too with a lot of difficulty. How that was done is explained in in this article. It was also widely documented on the news, so no coverup was even attempted by the western media, although the Serbs understandably blew it out of proportion by dragging around pieces of the plane and making loud speeches. The pilot was rescued.
And before you start branding me as a "Pro-American Imperialist Lackey" or something similar, bear in mind that I myself am Russian, of Serbian descent on my grandfather's side. I just feel that an even-handed, realistic approach is needed on these issues, and that credit should be given where it is due.
Oh, and as for the actual topic, I think that F-22 Raptor would own every plane in the game. The avionics are amazing, and the vectored thrust doesn't hurt either. I think a Sukhoi-37 with thrust vectoring might have a shot if it spots the Raptor early and the pilot is good enough, but the plane isn't even in mass production yet, so that's moot point.
As for the planes only present in the game, well... I'd say that it's pretty much a tie between F-15, MiG, and Sukhoi. Providing, of course, that the mode of combat is pure, close-range dogfight. If the conditions are realistic then I'd give the American jets a better chance at winning because of their better long-range detection capabilities.

No, really. I do. I suck monkey cock at anything even remotely related to programming. I'm a marketing puke.

The guy is just a moronic little kid. He'll notice someday that when people "grow up" they still have things they like to do in their free time, i.e. playing games, sports, watching TV... The mere fact that you happend to be 25, 35 or heck, 55, doesn't mean you start wearing slippers around the house and that instantly your only favorite activity is reading the financial section of The Times. Honestly, if that kiddo thinks that's what being an Adult (capitalization intentional) is all about, then I pity him, for his life will be a perfect picture of never-ending mediocricy and boredom.
