I don't know if it will make a difference, but have you tried running in XP compatability mode?

I dunno, that high of an approval rating and you would think nearly every sniper would use it every chance they got. I can not recall *ever* switching kits and thinking 'WOOT! SVD!'. Its more like 'Damn, let me switch back to my 96 and find a support guy...'
I guess I am in the 16% thats left over.

84% yes, yet no one uses it. Ironic, isn't it?
Im confused.
Really nice effects, man. Really nice.
Obviously you skeptics didn't note that these are images of Operation Blue *Peral*. You guys must be thinking of Operation Blue *Pearl*. Totally different map.

What makes Karkand popular? The number of single-map servers running Karkand does, thats what.
To summarize:
Linear layout, with workable, but not easy, routes to bypass the front line.
Restricted armor routes with alternate/narrow routes and cover for infantry.
Lengthy lines of view and fire (long, flat streets).
Capture point density.
Lots of yellow fog.
Is it the lack of yellow fog that makes Jalalabad less popular? Or is it the big open field in the beginning? Jalalabad has many of the same principals, so why is it less popular overall? The lines of fire are shorter, overall. Flag density is higher. Is Jalalabad too dense/short?
Again, speaking of non-IO. IO Jalalabad is just a big field of snipers.

Karkand with vehicles is actually a good bit of fun. Try it sometime. For the record, my thoughts for this discussion are relevant to non-IO BF2. IO just doesn't tantalize me as much as hiding from a BTR.
Anyone else have particularly good reasons why the map works? I was playing last night at Gatehouse watching how the waist-high walls were used for reloading cover. The low walls work particularly well against armor, as they give a good spot to pop and fire without fully exposing yourself.
Regarding the comment about the river crossing. Yes, once a stalemate is reached, the crossing can be tedious. On the other hand, both sides have the underlining goal of holding the island. To have a good chance of winning, US needs to get an island flag and hold it. The opposite is true of MEC, keep the island clear. As soon as an island flag is gone, MEC (if they have any sense) starts dropping back to recap. I think the underlying tension posed by the island lends a lot to the playability.

I do the same, which I think is one of the reasons Kark works well. I typically try to slip by on the right side first. If that is covered heavily, I will try the left side. If thats covered, I try the hole in the fence on the left side and run to Square. It works well because you are always near the action, but you have the possibility to slip by. As opposed to a wide open map like Songhua, where you can drive in a 80 mile circle unhindered and cap a back flag. At which point you start playing ring-around-the-rosie, moving to the next flag while the first flag is recaptured.
I am looking to get a broader understanding of the gameplay mechanics that go into a popular map, beyond my own understanding.

And we're off....on the wrong foot. blacklupus is the only one that mentioned the map itself. If you want to discuss SPM or whoring, at least tie it back to map features that promote the activity. Tight passages, bottlenecks, etc. Map *design* features are what I am interested in.
I think we can all admit that Karkand is (love it or hate it) the most played map in BF2. What I am wondering, from a playability/design viewpoint, is what makes it so playable? It will obviously be more than one factor, so try to keep responses fairly clear. And refrain from discussions revolving around how its the noob map, please. I would like to hear about map playability, not map players.
My top four thoughts:
No air vehicles so no one gets pounded mercilessly. The majority of players play on the ground, and there are few things more frustrating than seeing those big fat bombs falling on your head and knowing that you can't do a lot about it other than standing in line hoping that your button is held down harder than the other guy's.
Fairly linear layout, in that its possible to get to the back flags but difficult to do undetected. Once back flags are taken, it is still a linear battle. You always know where the fight is and usually where it will be next.
Fairly flat layout, with clear lines of sight and fire. You can see where the opposition is moving and either engage from afar or plan a route to them.
High flag density that doesn't require a two-minute walk/run to the next flag. You can re-spawn and be re-engaged in 20-30 seconds. Most BF2 players are hyper and want to shoot stuff, not walk for 5 minutes to get caught in the open and die.
What else?

Used to play on the StrafeRight server with Papa and p_static long ago. Its funny that I see this today, because I briefly saw the Moo_% p_static name this weekend on the iO server.
Still play nightly. Server count is a lot lower, and player count on said servers is lower. Its still fun, once you find a server you like.
That was refreshing.
One way is to create a image with a transparent background for each number, then place that image in a layer above your video, position it, stretch it, etc.
200 images is a lot of work, though.

Middle = pistol
Forward side = knife
Rear side = main weapon to toggle fire mode
This covers you for that long-range single-shot sniping (miss!) to full auto/burst mid-range firing (miss!) to panicked short-range pistol duel (miss!) to the punchyouintheface range knife fight (dust!).
Then I set the side buttons up for exterior views on vehicles to make sure I hit the mine I want to hit.

What server? And it looked like IO only, true? If so, thats too bad, since the Kark/Mash/Sharq/Jala rotation is the bestest. I need one with vehicles, though.
If it is a aimbot, its a sucky one. There are way too many body shots to be am aimbot. The twitchyness is pretty common, you snap to likely spawns/approaches. He gets some good streaks and consecutive headshots. Snapping away from that sniper and back to him is because he thought that he had finished the sniper and moved to the next target, likely hearing the other guy shooting on his left. He turns back to finish the sniper because he noticed that the sniper didnt go down, either when he was turning or he didnt see the kill message.
Maybe a deviation tweak, maybe, more likely reg, but I dont think it is an aimbot.

Im no stranger to capping flags and it pisses me off too when people dont. Thus the subtle sarcasm and the push for a city server where there isn't an opportunity for everyone to stand around waiting for the air spawns.steelie34 wrote:

What is missing is a 48-64 player city maps server with vehicles. Kark/Jala/Sharq/Mash. Kick spawn campers in armor. Spawn campers on foot are fair game.
My point exactly. Someone posts a video of a good run and everyone jumps in to crush it as fast as possible, claiming it is 'fail' and they do so much better. All the time. With a KDR of 2-3. Playing on public servers. Which suck. And anyone can get 50-0 streaks on foot. As a non-medic.DeathUnlimited wrote:

You know, this one time, I got a 105-0 kill streak on Karkand as a pubbing medic. It was awesome. Insane, really. Then I turned my monitor on and killed 300 more. But i forgot to fraps it. Sux, otherwise I could show my awesomeness to everyone.
This thread is becoming as bad as an average youtube comment board of a frag video. Everyone is soo good that they do not even have to take their heads out of their asses to own it up.
So why isnt your KDR 25.9561? Even on your 'pro' account with 32 minutes of play using the medic kit?

Do you need to put this in each time you fire up BF2, or are the new settings persistent?
IE, if I play on a couple of servers only, and my ping is 40 +/- for both servers, can I run this one time and be set for those servers, or do I need to run it every time I start playing?

Very nice. It quit on me at the 6:12 mark.
I tend to like whole rounds more, since they show movement and cover techniques that frags can't/don't.
How many players were on the server? It didnt seem very populated.

Check your accuracy history before and after you started using the fix and see if is unchanged or going up.
I started using it a week ago, and mine is going up, but it is hard to tell definitively.

Someone else check theirs and let us know if there is a before/after difference. I personally feel that dragheadshots are landing more often.

You mean you actually kill people?! You usually get me so turned around I wind up committing suicide out of bounds.
Of course, thats F35 vs J10. Anything remotely balanced, I dont have a chance.

It looks like TechCrunch did some digging and uncovered the actual reason behind the Stage6 shutdown. Apparently a clash of egos will be snatching the goodness that is Stage6 from us all.

problem solved.
Not everyone wants to use TS. I dont like TS, since you have to join the server TS each time you get on a server. Or, you have to join your clan's TS and round everyone up to go to the same server. In game VOIP is much better, as you can essentially play a pick-up game with anyone on the server that is willing to join your squad. You dont have all the chatter from other squads/games/whatever that may be occurring on a TS channel.
Anyway, back on topic, the short answer is to not be afraid to use your mic. The majority of the time if you are using yours, someone else will eventually speak up as well, regardless of the server.
Start your own squad and name it 'VOIP' or something. Every time someone joins, I ask if they have a mic as an icebreaker. Yes, no, no response, it gives you an idea of what to expect from them.
I have found that, when I start playing a new server, I start a squad and make sure I communicate. 3 things tend to happen.
1. Others with that want to communicate will respond and join
2. People without mics that want teamwork will join
3. People with mics will join but be fairly quiet for a while, then start communicating
Typically, even if you are the only one talking, you will do better in the game, since most people that join a VOIP squad are typically a little more keen on teamwork.
Just make sure you communicate relevant information.

Wow, Dom, no wonder I can never kill you. I cant keep up with what you are doing watching you fly, much less trying to keep up with you while I *am* flying.
Im gonna have to watch that a couple more times to figure out a pattern or something.

Hey guys-
I just wanted to let everyone know that Straferight has put their top ranked City Maps server back up. It is currently running 64 player 50%FF, non-IO, Karkand/Sharqi. Jalalabad and/or Mashtuur will be added into the rotation soon.
If you are looking for a good server with competitive players, look no farther. Squad up, grab your mic, and get ready for some brutal competition. Dont worry, if you get shot, xcessive will rez you!
Avoid the sissy IO servers, man up and knife that tank in the treads! Join us and lets get this server back at the top of the list!
::mods, I looked for a server board and didnt see it. Please move this if it is in the wrong spot.::
