Fast paced action that rarely dies down as long as there's 25+ people.

What ever happened to huge clan battles with 20+ players per team on maps like Zatar Wetlands?

Man this game was so much better in the beginning, they ruined it with patches. I miss the good clan factor of the game, and the teamwork. I used to be in an awesome clan that just died because everybody padding Jalalabad and Karkand.

Karkand with vehicles is actually a good bit of fun.  Try it sometime.   For the record, my thoughts for this discussion are relevant to non-IO BF2.  IO just doesn't tantalize me as much as hiding from a BTR.

Anyone else have particularly good reasons why the map works?  I was playing last night at Gatehouse watching how the waist-high walls were used for reloading cover.  The low walls work particularly well against armor, as they give a good spot to pop and fire without fully exposing yourself.

Regarding the comment about the river crossing.  Yes, once a stalemate is reached, the crossing can be tedious.  On the other hand, both sides have the underlining goal of holding the island.  To have a good chance of winning, US needs to get an island flag and hold it.  The opposite is true of MEC, keep the island clear.  As soon as an island flag is gone, MEC (if they have any sense) starts dropping back to recap.  I think the underlying tension posed by the island lends a lot to the playability.

I hate Karkand, but still think you are essentially right. I once played a 32 IO on a 64 map on a French server with proper squadplay and it was epic. Advancing under proper teammate support from flag to flag from cover to cover, outmanoeuvring enemy squads, getting meds and ammo when you need it; it all worked incredibly well.

I find it fun in both IO and with vehicles because I can Spec Ops whore and enjoy putting C4 everywhere and blowing up some unsuspecting people.  Heck I got my Vet Explosives on Karkand partly due to placing a C4 at the bottom of the stairs at Suburb and blowing it up when all the medics were fighting over the revive of two USMC i killed at the top of the stairs and slid down, must have been 5-8 kills their.  If theirs vehicles it's easy to hide in alley's and run out and C4 vehicles when they're not looking.

I'm pretty sure it IS true BF2 if 70% of servers do it.

I, for one, fucking love Karkand. Can't get enough of it.

Indeed, Karkand IO with 64 players is bloody terrible. At the very most it should have about 40.
Karkand with with 32 players on 64 size map is good. theres always like 3 different battles going on so its not just "look theres 20 people, spam spam spam"

Without vehicles it is not BF2, it is a wannabee CS. The only reason most servers run it is because majority of the BF2 players out there are too noobish to learn how to deal with vehicles. They like a small box that everyone can be stuffed into. I/O is an example of how a mode would have just been created with only one kit and one gun. Just because most servers are however does not make it the game. The game of Battlefield is multirole platform. Limiting or removing these roles in anyway creates a pseudo BF. Play all kits, play all vehicles, be a squad member, leader or command the whole battle, play all maps, do what ever you want and deal with players who do what they want. That is BF.

Tbh i'm yet to experience a decent vehicle game in karkand. Every time it's just a raep fest at hotel because the usmc tanks/apcs are too afraid to push forward for fear of losing their armour and the mec armour just hangs back and racks up the kills.

I always thought that the hotel flag should be neutral so that both mec and usmc have to push for the cap, much like in warlord.

That's because an experienced tank commander knows not to get to close to an enemy flag. They are supposed to provide support for the infantry taking it just like arty only more direct. The only fear most people should have is the enemy taking their armor. Play the Legion at War Vanilla server. Its usually officer heavy on both sides and kark comes up in the map rotation. You will get a good game there, or a really bad raping.

Where can I find this crate? I've seen the fish crate on numerous maps but I don't remember seeing the teddies.

Also, on Operation Blule Pearl if you shoot the water near the temple flag you will see numerous alarmed fish.

there are 2 crates:
1 between hotel and square, up against the building (where the mounted machine gun can get cha')
the other is the crate beside the mounted MG, against the wall around square.

Wow. I'd never thought about that and that's a REALLY good idea.  A good MEC team can keep the US pinned down the whole game.
Is this possible to modify on a server to try?

The multiple routes to capping flags, the multiple ways of winning the game. People love going "spec ops" in the mountains and capping the flag behind all the action. Also, the combat is very concentrated, so you have a good idea of who's where.

The map is popular because of the lack of routes and linear paths with good view. There is always only about 2 main streets to shoot and only one direction to guard. People don't really like dealing with enemies from more than one direction.

Some people might find the map easy to clay and grenade spam because enemies are concentrated on only those few key areas and streets but some people might find grenade spam to be a lesser issue because of the clear view it provides so you can pick off bunny hopping grenade spammers in the safety of being miles away.

Also the lack of roof tops makes snipers less annoying. I like sniping and pretty good at it but I have to agree that snipers are annoying as hell. So no stupid sinpers on buildings further reduce the directions you can get shot from. This is exactly why karkand goes to shit and becomes a retarded experience when the two teams have either sides of the river. The grande spamming and snipers get so gay. Or when a US team has a squad above the factory building. That is also seriously gay.

There is also lots of cover and alley ways to escape grenade spam and vehicles and such.

You can see the new beta map is built on pretty much the same principles. There is only a couple of long main streets with clear straight view and many back alleys to reduce grenade spam.

Well, if you can't deal with several snipers from different directions then you are not ''pretty good'' at sniping.

I love it when the USMC gets Train and MEC the other side of the river. It's so much easier to pwn them on the brigde or in the water. I pretty much always get Gold Medal when this happens...

You know, I've always thought a Special Forces version of Karkand would be awesome.  The ability to use grappling hooks and ziplines to get up on all those buildings would rock...
