Yeah, UTS in sydney is about double the cost in tuition fees compared to the universities I applied to in LA.Cybargs wrote:
Yeah US tuition is fucking expensive as shit for international/out of state. The kid might as well just stick with Sweden... Right, I lived in NY during november to february and there where a few days with sub zero (celsius) temperatures, for the most part it ranged from 0-5 I'd reckon. there were even two days in january with 15 degrees.Jay wrote:

I also visited NY about a year ago in April and the city is great in spring time. It was like 30 degrees for two days.
The cold weather is not that bad, we're not talking siberia cold with blizzards and shit, but I just really prefer mild and warm temperatures and now that I have the chance to live in such a place I gotta take. If I end getting employed in the US I would definitely consider moving to NYC, though.
Oh, I see how that could be kinda fun then, having a school team that's really good and alot of students supporting. But i've only seen stuff like it in movies, in Sweden there isn't anything like the college sports you guys have.Ilocano wrote:

When I was deciding what I wanted to study I considered doing an MBA but it just seems a little overrated and honestly I'm not very interested in studying business like that. It's also a lot more expensive than almost all other programs.
The tuition is about the same for all of the three schools I mentioned, around 5-7k a semester.
From what I've heard and seen it's always around 70-80 degrees in LA year 'round. Which is a very pleasent temperature to live in. I heard somewhere that 77 degrees is the perfect temperature for humans to live in because we could walk around naked and not freeze nor be warm and sweat. Not that I would walk around naked, just sayin
Yeah, that's why I said all year round. Granted, NY is great in the summer but pretty cold for 6 months, and that's not very different from home.

Hi,
Been a while since I posted something here on bf2s, but who better to consult for valuable input!?
Here's the deal: I'm moving to the US to study my masters this fall (from Sweden). I have been admitted to HPU on Honolulu, Hawaii. But I'm still waiting for an answer from CSUF and CSULB, that is Fullerton and Long Beach in Los Angeles, CA. At HPU I'm going to study a masters in communication and at the two universities in LA i've applied to a masters in computer science. I am finishing a bachelor in Compuer Science atm.
I'd rather study communication but living on Hawaii is so damn expensive. Plus, I got a better feeling about living in Cali, more going on, not as expensive and I'm thinking about maybe going in to the film industry. But I'm not that ecited about another two years of computer science, it's not bad, it's just not as interesting as communication.
As most of you are americans, I thought you'd be able to give some advice on which place would be better to live in given criteria such as cost, life style, weather and so forth. Any ideas?
Thanks!
/Phil

I forgot to mention that, he has Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum edition. Pretty good consumer software but not as easy to use like the Pinnacle Studio or perhaps Adobe Premiere Elements. Which he has used before. However, with Sony Vegas he gets a lot of other handy programs like Sound Forge and DVD-architect etc.
What should I do about the OS, wait for win7? how does the upgrade version work?

I've thought about the DVD vs Blue-ray but a blue ray is not something that I think he needs right now. the hardware itself is the most important thing right now so that he has a good computer that will last him a couple of years. More harddrives, a new screen, Bluray drive, more memory etc is something to consider later on.
I know there is an UD3 which is not much more expensive, maybe i'll go with that one instead. And I'll change the DVD drive, I didnt really look closely since it was more of an example
EDIT: What do you guys think I should do about the OS? I have 32-bit WinXP at home that I can use but would prefer to get win7 when it comes out.

Hyperthreading would be great, but I don't think I can squeeze that in to the budget.
what about this:
Optiarc AD-7240S DVD±RW Svart SATA, OEM
Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2
Corsair 4GB (2x2048MB) 1333MHz XMS3-10600
Corsair CX 400W 80+
500GB Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ
Cooler Master Elite 341, Svart
CPU Core i7 860, 2.80GHz
PowerColor Radeon HD4350 512MB HDMI
that's a bit over budget but still ok I think.
I can always get more hardrives later

Hey,
I'm buying a computer for my dad who wants a computer he can edit HD-video on. He is willing to spend around $7-800.
I'm thinking that I should get the Core i5, about 4 GB of ram at least, a standard 7200rpm hardrive, a lower end graphics card like the AMD HD4650 or the nVidia Geforce9500GT. No need to spend a lot on a good GPU since he wont be gaming. Of course the GPU is important for HD rendering but the processor is the most crucial part of the setup, so I prefer to put money on that instead.
What setup will provide the most bang for my(fathers) buck? Any thought?

I cant blame you for asking . and I never even removed them to start with. Although I did unplug them and then plugged them back in again just to make sure..
I seem to be having almost the same problem, and it's most likely the PSU that has given up tbh. Which also might explain the strange smell (probably burned circuitry)
Im afraid so...
I dont have an onboard gfx card and I have tried booting without some of the components - didn't work. I should probably give you my specs:
Intel C2D E8400
ABIT IX38 QuadGT
Power Color Radeon HD4850
PSU Corsair TX650W
Intel C2D E8400
ABIT IX38 QuadGT
Power Color Radeon HD4850
PSU Corsair TX650W
After reorganizing the cables in my case and moving the hard drives I can not get my computer to start up again, it worked flawlessly until a couple of hours ago. I have checked that all cables are where they should be and have tried starting with or without different components such as memory modules and graphics card etc, without success.
When I try push the ON-button I see the LED power indicator flashing for about half a second and I also hear a kind of clicking/twitching sound, some kind of electrical surge as if the PSU tries to power up but can't. This sound keeps on sounding perhaps every five seconds or so until I either reset CMOS or power off the PSU.
The POST LED screen on my mother board shows "8.2.", which according to the manufacturers manual means "Enable ATX Power Supply".
I have also tried doing the paper clip PSU test, and I have gotten the fan to start when shorting one of the black wired pins, although there is an unpleasant clicking sound (not to different from the one described above) repeating itself while the fan spins - coming from the PSU. After a few seconds I noticed that something smelled like it was burnt, so I stopped the test.
My conclusion is that the PSU perhaps might be working to some extent, but not enough to power my system - which it should be able to and has for a year now.
Do you guys have any tips, or have your perhaps had the same kind of problem yourselves?
Thank you in advance!

I dont need all the space a 1TB drive gives me, so it's I'd rather go for a VR or Black unless I'm I choose the SSD, tough decision tbh
30GB will be enough, and I can always upgrade later. But of course you are making a good point and 30GB is really "just enough" for the OS/apps.
It's hard to decide!
If you guys have any other thought then please give them to me as I want as much feed back as possible

The only SSD I'm interested in is The OCZ Vertes 30GB or perhaps even 60GB. And they are kickass. But expensive nonetheless.
But I am a bit confused regarding WD Black (or WD AAKS/Blue) 640GB in raid 0, on some forums I see ppl that are getting better access times with 2 or 3 drives in raid, around 8 ms or even less, which is less than what a single Black can manage. These ppl have the ICH10R southbridge which is apparently great for handling RAID-configurations - I have the ICH9R. It should be quite good as well?
On the other hand some ppl tell me that you can never get better access times with raid 0 since the controler must access more discs. But as I stated above this doesnt seem to be the case.
And if the WD Blacks in Raid0 can reach around 8ms in access time, then there is really no point in getting a VRaptor right?

So I've been looking in to buying one of the following:
WD Caviar Black 640GB x2
WD VelociRaptor 150GB
OCZ Vertex 30GB SSD
They are all great drives but I can't make up my mind. I will be using it/them for OS/apps and maybe some games, so I want access times to fast and performance to be snappy. Of course the SSD is the fastest but the the 30GB feels a bit limiting, and I only plan to spend around $150 at most, so a 60GB is out of the question.
The WD VR has almost twice as fast access times compared to the WD Black, and that doesn't get faster when you RAID them, probably even slower. Which is why I hesitate on buying two WD Blacks. Read/write performance might get better overall though. But having 1,2 TB as a system drive seems like somewhat of an overkill even if I partition a small part for OS. And I don't wanna waste 1 TB of hard drive space, but filling it up will slow the OS down. So I'm leaning towards the VRaptor or the SSD, but I'm not excluding the Blacks completely. They are pretty cheap and you do get a lot of bang for your buck.
I should also mention that capacity is not an issue for me, I have a 750GB Samsung for storage etc.
Also, mobo: Abit IX38 QuadGT
Thanks!

Hey,
I have the "Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro" but would like to make some cool effects like gun fire and blood etc. Is it possible to just take a video file and open it in after affects and edit it there? Or do I have to use Adobe Premiere Pro aswell? If so, what other options are there for making cool post-production effects?
Thanks,

Ok. Only discount on the memory modulesScorpion0x17 wrote:

I use it mostly for gaming and studying, surfing etc. And maybe a bit for Video editing. So maybe 8 GB is a bit overkill. It's just that they have a 40% discount on the OCZ Reaper 4GB PC8500 memories right now, so i'd feel stupid not taking the opportunity .FloppY_ wrote:

I agree. Real organic Milk is not too bad though, good protein and some calcium etc. but it's kind of weird - when you think about - that humans drink cow milk, not only as children but all their lives. Cow milk is for baby cows, it's "made by nature" to be perfect for new born baby cows - not for full grown humans. Humans drink their mothers milk when they are babys, but full grown cows and bulls certainly don't drink our mothers milk.usmarine wrote:

But hey, I eat yogurt and cream cheese and curd and put milk in my protein shakes. So I guess i shouldn't be pointing fingers
What about the consumer Vegas versions, like Vegas Movie Studio 9 (Pro Pack)?
I actually think I'll go with the Sony Vegas Platinum Pro Pack, a lot of bang for your buck. Nice audio programs and lots of effects, plus it doesn't have that "I'm-making-a-corn-wedding-video" feel to it. It's even cheaper than Pinnacle Studio Ultimate 12, and cheaper than the Photoshop & Premiere elements pack. Thanks for the tip!
Anybody has any thoughts?

Thanks, that supports my decision further. I think I'll be buying the Adobe Premiere Elements 7 & Photoshop Elements 7 Upgrade, since I already have an older version of the the bundle.
Any other thoughts before I seal the deal?

There's a lot of effort that is put in to making these kinds of software, so I'd rather buy it. And I'm not gonna be playing around with some lame footage, I want to make a bit more serious stuff so I feel it's necessary to have the real deal. But the issue of downloading versus buying belongs to another discussion.
I think Sony Vegas is to expensive. And I wont be using DivX formats so it's not gonna be a problem. Any other thoughts?

Eizo are pretty good, but not as famous as Samsung. Google after some reviews and get filled in, then decide. Also, after all the bullshit with different panel qualities for the Samsung 226BW, I kind of lost my will to buy a Samsung monitor.
I missed that post, just read through quickly. And if it was only £9 more than it's all right. Good luck with your new rig then
point taken, although I will probably go crossfire with another 4850 - and if I decide to buy another accelero s1 Im gonna go with some heatsinks that dont fall of to easy.
I would go with E8400, no point in spending a lot of extra money on 0.16 GHZ of extra speed you get with the E8500, you can easily OC the CPU up to 3.6 gHZ. And also go with 4gb of mem, especially if your choosing a 64-bit operating system. And are you sure you want the Antec twelvehundred? I'd say its a bit of an overkill, go with the ninehundred instead.
Yes, I meant the glue that sticks them to the memory chips, not the sinks themselves. What's adhesive glue?DeathUnlimited wrote:

Ok, I tried lowering the Gpu clock, but that didnt really help. then i lowered the memory clock just a few MHZ, and now the game's ok I think. The mem clock is at 1110 MHZ and the GPU clock is set at 630 MHZ, it's good enough I think. Should I try to OC it with Rivatuner instead?
I did the thing where you let CCC tell you what your maximum stable overclock is, both for GPU and RAM. So both are slightly overclocked, I didnt just crank it up.Bell wrote:

Ok, that seems right. However, Im planning on going CF with another 4850 soon, so maybe then I wont need another 70 MHZ of core speed.Freezer7Pro wrote:
On a 4850, there is absolutely no point in overclocking the core, as the vRAM is bottlenecking it. Clock up the RAM, leave the core on stock. The only difference, and reason for the 4870 to cost so much, is the presence of super-fast, quad-pumped GDDR5.
I have GPU-Z. Right now, at pretty much idle I get a reading of 37 C. BTW, does anyone know what the the other three GPU temperatures are for? (eg #1, #2, #3) They read, 37.5 - 40 - 38
i'll try to "underclock" it or decrease the speed, whatever you wanna call it. But the temps are fine I think. Also have a chassi(Antec 300) fan blowing on to the card.Ryan wrote:
If it's due to OCing, check your temps, and try getting something to cool your card down.
It could be problems with your monitor too.
Now that I think about it I did have some issues getting the Accelero S1 on my 4850, or actually not so much the cooler itself as the RAM heatsinks (anyone who has an accelero knows what Im talking about...). The small motherfuckers keep on falling off all the time when you working with getting the cooler on, and one of heat pipes leading away from the heat spreader blocks on of the RAM heat sinks a bit, so i had to bend it and now it only sits over half the RAM piece. This could be one of the reasons, but most likely that would only cause that specific RAM piece to overheat once in a while - and I dont think thats an issue since I haven noticed anything until recently and all my other games work perfectly...
