i use 3ds max, and have been using autocad for 4 years. but they were high school classes, so i probably couldnt answer many questions. tho i really enjoy doing cad things in my free time. currently i am actually making my room and all my furniture in it, all to exact specs. im hoping to use it as a portfolio sort of thing if i can ever find a summer job or internship doing cad-things

so i got a new mouse for my new laptop, the microsoft optical 4000 or w/e, and so far iv been satisfied. but the problem is that i want to change the functions of the left and right scroll wheel buttons. the default is that they scroll left and right, which i want to change. but the program that it comes with, microsoft intellipoint, only installs microsoft mouse. and microsoft mouse only lets me set the scroll wheel button itself, not its left and right functions. is there any way to change this so i can set them?
edit
ok i cant get the link to work correctly cause im a noob but its the microsoft optical mouse 4000

the review that you linked to (the first cooler) recommends not to buy it.
tho the second video was interesting. a question that i noticed people on youtube were having a debate over: do i want a cooler that sucks the hot air away from the laptop, or one that blows cool air into the laptop?

so i just got my new laptop, a dell xps 16, and i am extremely pleased with it. the only thing is that it gets pretty hot if i am playing any games or rendering a video or watching a dvd. this being said, i think im going to go ahead and buy a laptop cooling pad, just because i dont want to overhead my laptop. since i know nothing about them, it would be very helpful if someone could recommend me a good one. i dont want it to be too expensive, and it would be great if i could get it from newegg. any ideas?

hahaha yea we made the whole thing as a joke basically. we wanted to make it as random and violent as possible
hey if anyones interested me and some of my friends made an short animated film about the olympics. it took us like 9 months but i think it was time well spent. our animation teacher surprisingly loved it, and he has shown it to all his classes. everyone in our school who has seen it has thought it was good, so we decided to put it online.
yes, it looks kinda bad, i have only taken animation for 2 years, so dont expect any pixar-like animation. yes the quality isnt great, i had to compress it 3 times to get the file a decent size. yes, we look and sound like fools haha. but we decided to upload it anyway, and see what the internet thinks of our video.
here is a link if anyone is interested:
Olympic Heroes
everything was done by us, including the music.
comments?

and yes i know heroes is spelled wrong in the video haha

quick question, because my parents are wondering: is asus a reliable brand name? hows is their customer service?
alright i think iv decided to go with the Asus. i think it looks much better, and it has a few other good features (like 320 GB instead of 250 GB, webcam, cool looks) that would have cost most on the lenovo. i just have to call the college to figure out exactly about the OS, but that shouldnt be a problem. thanks for the help guys!
alright so i was looking at the site for the lenovo R500 and i think its pretty sweet. i customized one with:
-Intel Core 2 Duo processor T9400 (2.53GHz 1066MHz 6MBL2)
-Vista Ultimate
-4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory
-15.4" WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050)
-Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
-250GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm
-CD-RW/DVD-ROM 24x/24x/24x/8x Max Combo Ultrabay Enhanced
for like $1,199
my only complaint is that i think it looks a bit ugly haha. but i could probably live with that. now how does this compare with the Asus?
and also, im just curious as to why everyone picked the Lenovo R500. good prices? good warrenty? good options?

so i just graduated this past week, and iv been on the search for a good laptop for college. i will be majoring in mechanical engineering at WPI, and maybe getting a minor in animation or interactive media and game design. so basically, i will need a computer that can handle a good amount of stuff. im planning on using it for AutoCAD and 3d Studio max, and maybe a bit of video editing and possibly some games (although gaming will be an afterthought- i do not want to make any decisions based on gaming)
long story short: im looking at the $1000 and a bit up range, dont really want to go far over that. i need good power and a decent monitor. battery life isnt that important, because i would think i would use it mostly when it is plugged in. and finally, WPI requires that all laptops must have vista premium or business, so any advice on buying those or upgrading is also appreciated.
these are some of the ones i have been looking at on newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6834114623
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6834220483
maybe on the higher price scale: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6834117886
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6834117857
any advice? or suggestions of other laptops?

ok well windows wont install, idk why. its all fucked up. but im just gonna get the ram (cause the deal ends on sunday) and try it out. if it doesnt work, il just send it back. i can do that right? it doesnt have to be unopened or anything?
alright then il just hurry up and reinstall windows then run it again.
haha yea linUx. i thought it looked a bit weird when i was typing it but i knew people would know what i was talking about
* ok im gonna start the reinstallation shit again. il be back in a bit with a picture of that program

am i able to do that in Linix? i need to reinstall windows still, which i will do in an hour or so. i tried to open it in linix but im not sure if it works. altho i do suck at using linix...DeathUnlimited wrote:
To see if it fits your computer:
1. Download this: http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz_148.zip
2. Open it and open the mainboard tab
3. take a screenshot (Alt+PrtScr button and then paste to paint & save & upload to imageshack)
4. Link the image here
To answer your question:
32-Bit XP and Vista both can use 4GB of ram, they just can't utilize the whole of it. It will work just fine but only about 3-3.5GB of it will be available to programs. 64-bit XP or Vista would be able to use all of it.
alright
so if i just buy these and put them in, while taking my others out (i have 2 .5 gigs and 2 .25 gigs that came with the computer), so i have 4 gigs, itl work fine? i was also just reading about how windows doesnt recognize all 4 gigs of it. but if there is no actual problems, that is fine with me, seeing as it is only 24$. 24$ for 3.4 gigs is a sweet deal. i just want to make sure there will be no problems or crashing or anything of that sort

hey so i was thinking of getting this ram for my computer
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820145184
since its 4GB for only 24.99 (its one of those newegg special deals), im gonna go ahead and buy it quickly. im not sure how to find out if its even compatible with my computer, but i figure il get it now and try it and if id doesnt work il just send it back. so my question is basically about this:
Other Thoughts: To the reviewer that said he isn't using VISTA and can't get all 4 GB of RAM to register. XP will not register 4 GB of RAM, you will need to upgrade to VISTA to get the full use of your RAM.
that is someones comment on newegg. i have windows xp, so i am wondering if that means this ram wont work for me. will windows xp just not register all of it, or will it register none of it at all, or something? will there be any problems if i put it in there with my other 2 sticks of .5 gig each? im just curious and i want to find out soon because i dont want to miss such a great deal.

so i tried doing that thing with running that program, but whenever i did it (i did it about 3 or 4 times) it always said there were no errors. however, my computer still crashed, and then it wouldnt start up at all. it just kept doing that annoying thing when its 'on' but not really on. so i took it to geeksquad in bestbuy, and told them everything. they took it in for diagnostics and they called back later that day to say it was the power supply. so they installed a new power supply and i picked it all up like 2 hours ago. the start-up problem was gone, and the computer seemed to run slightly faster and much quieter. however, after maybe 20 or 30 mins, it bluescreened AGAIN, exactly the same as before.
i was extremely pissed about this for several reasons. first, i bet that after the people there figured out what the problem was with the startup, they just assumed that was it, and disregarded the blue-screening. i was about to take it back, which i realized they would probably want to charge me AGAIN to have them figure out what was wrong again. this is total bullshit because i brought it in there primarily to fix that problem, which i clearly told them about the first time.
so anyway, right before i brought it back, i remembered their post-diagnostic folder thing that they give out. so i checked it, and it have some info about what they had done. there were 2 notes. one was regarding the new power supply and what they did to install it. the other reads as follows: "clean off temp files...informed customer who didnt want to sink a lot of money into unit to restore machine for best results."
i assume that they mean re-installing windows, but i wasnt completely sure. after thinking about it, i did not want to reinstall everything just to maybe find that it was a hardware problem with the RAM or the motherboard or w/e and have done all that work for nothing. so i fired up an old copy of Linux my friend gave me last time my computer got a virus. i figure, il try this out for a while, and if nothing crashes, it is probably a problem with windows itself, and not the hardware. likewise, if it crashes in Linux, then it probably is a hardware problem.
ugghhhh fuck my life. i hate this computer. i just want it to work. i cant wait to get my laptop in a few months when i graduate.
but thank you all for the help. all this shit just reinforced my opinion that getting help from people like you guys is cheaper, more down to earth, and more helpful than places like geeksquad. if anyone has any other advice, im all ears
oh yea, how would one go about finding all my system specs from llinux? i just saw some people ask about them and i realized i never posted them.

alright, since most of you guys said memory problems, il try opening up my computer and doing that swapping with the ram.
i need some tips for how to go about doing it tho...
ok. so i should first try only 1 stick first, then boot it back up? how will i know if it is the problem or not? like, will there be a noticable change with my computer? same goes with switching the sticks around; will there be some sort of notiable difference after i turn my computer on?
(oh yea and i have 1.5 GB of ram. if i can recall correctly, i used to have .5 GB, then i bought a pack that had two sticks of .5 GB. im fairly sure it was kingston ram, or something like that. il go and look it up after this, im just trying to get this all out quickly in case it blue-screens again. but i think that my computer came with 2 sticks of .25 GB ram each. i dont remember exactly what i did when i upgraded the ram, il have to check that out in the computer then get back to u guys)

idk if anyone remembers, but im constantly trying to fix problems with my computer, which is in turn constantly doing something wrong.
ok so this time, i didnt download anything, so there is no kind of virus or anything. my computer has been running kind of strange lately. when its on, it works fine, but sometimes when we turn it on nothing will happen. the computer itself will power on, but nothing else will. nothing connected works (keyboard, monitor, mouse, etc...). so basically the computer is physically on, but its not. it used to happen sporadically but lately it has been happening almost every time we turn the computer off. after maybe 30 mins of not working, sometimes i will restart it again and it will work. once its running, its fine.
but getting to the real problem; i was rendering something in 3dsmax overnight. the render was gonna take about 5 hours, since the lighting was fairly complex. this morning when i got to the computer, the render was done and everything seemed fine, except the computer was still running very slowly. i restarted it (with the restart thing, not just turning it on and off.) about an hour ago, it blue screened when it was just sitting there.
i restarted it and it worked fine for another 20 mins or so then it blue screened on my mom again. so i restarted it in safe mode, and about 30 mins later it did it again. i have no idea why its doing this, and i was just wondering if anyone had any ideas.
a few things to note. the past few weeks i have been doing entense workloads of stuff in 3dsmax, for a movie a few of my friends and i are making. i re-save files constantly, in case anything messes up, so i dont lose anything. so im note sure if that has anything to do with it. also, the computer has been on for maybe 2 or 3 nights now, because we dont want to have to go through all the trouble of the strange thing when the computer wont start up after its shut down. we have been planning on doing standby mode, but iv been rendering things overnight, so we havnt put it into standby mode overnight yet. im not sure if this has anything to do with it. the computer is fairly old, we got it around 5 or 6 years ago. until lately, it has been running fine however.
im running disk cleanup now, which found like 40,000 kb of temporary files, so im not sure if that has anything to do with it. after running the disk cleanup, im gonna bring a lot of files to our external harddrive, then refrag then diskcleanup again. im just pulling these outta my ass, hoping they will somehow help. anyone have any advice?
(oh yea and i know that i am constantly asking stupid questons about my computer, and always having problems with it then running here for help. sorry if its gotten on anyones nerves lol. but u guys are extremely helpful and i own so many people thanks. so thank you for any help, and sorry about being so bad at using my computer haha)

ok. so i got ANOTHER virus. this time i wasnt even doing anything bad, just looking around online for cool pics to use as wallpaper. on site got all laggy and freezy, i restarted the computer, and then it began. all it was is just the same kind i got as last time, when the virus creates popups saying that im not protected, and opens up a webpage to where i can download their free programs to protect my computer, which is obvioulsy just going to give me more viruses.
so right when i realized i had the virus i unplugged my internet, so basically it cant get any worse than it is. i have also gotten help from my friend. he gave me linix and i used linix to move all our documents to our external harddrive. so basically the virus cant get worse, and everything is backed up. i know i can just reinstall windows, but thats a huge pain and id rather see if there are any other ways to get rid of it.
having that said, iv tried a number of programs that my computer-smart friend recommended, and while most have found things and deleted them, the virus is still there. one program, which is free, has detected what the virus is and the path. of course, to use the removal feature, one must buy the full version. ARGH! so i thought i could just look at the path and go to there and delete it. BUTTT look at the path:
i dont know how to find and delete that. my friend also said that i can just start up my computer so its just the command line or something, nothing else is running, and i can somehow delete it from there. but i thought that before i tried that i would ask around here and see if anyone had any advice.
oh yea also, last time this happened, i just got advice from here, and did that msconfig thing and set it so the virus would not start up with the computer. i have found the virus there too, but i cant unselect it, it says i must be and administrater. but i am, and i even went to the administrater user in safe mode and it said that same thing. so i know its the virus protecting itself there.
so im kinda stuck
any ideas?

yea iv always made things boxy, and thats why i was suprised that this actually turned out the way it did (fillet is the greatest tool )Ryan wrote:
In AutoCAD? That's amazing. I've used that program in school, but just for making blueprints. I'm in the process of creating a FN SCAR-L on 3DStudioMax, but it's not even half as good as yours. I don't know how to make it look rounded and sleek, instead of boxy and chunky.

not nearly as long as i thought. i think iv been working on it for like 3 days, idk how many hours a day tho. i could find out how long using this thing in the program, but that shows all the time that it has been opened for. and i left it open one night by accident, so it has a hung amount of hoursTheAussieReaper wrote:
That's really good, how long did it take you?
hey, as probably nobody knows (because even tho i come to BF2s ever single day, and have been since i first registered here, i almost NEVER post anything) im really into modeling in CAD. iv been taking CAD and also Animation for the past 4 years in high school, and im hoping to do something related to mechanical engineering in college. i just wanted to show u guys this M4 i have been working on for the past few days. at first i thought i wouldnt be able to do it, but then i personally think it turned out surprisingly good (by my standards at least).
(make sure to click on them to view them full size, they look kinda jagged and stuff right now cause its not full size)
first render with materials added
propped it up, added some ammo and shadowing
im planning on now creating all kinds of attachments for it; scopes (ACOG and red dot), handgrips, maybe a flashlight, and hell, if i figure out how to work with lights better i might actually made the flashlight work lol
im gonna do a quick video, just of it spinning, to show off both sides (i personally like the side with the ejection port more )

i bought the new offspring album today, and its fucking SICK
id rather have it own in cqc (like it should) and actually be useful at short/medium range then just completely suck at all ranges and be a totally useless weapon
no its probably not your router
the first day the demo came out i played it all day with no lag, but then yesterday i had massive lag, and eventually i couldnt even find games anymore.
if you check on the bad company EA forums, everyone is complaining about the lag, and EA has said it was because soo many ppl were playing the demo, and their servers were overloaded or something. but they said they were firing up more servers and they would be up and running soon, so the lag should go away soon

hey i have autocad 2008 on my home pc, and its also the program we use in my CAD class at school. one of my friends showed me a cool thing where he just changed something in the views menu which allowed u to change the backround of renders. it made the renders look much much better and crisper. however, when i tried to do it on mine at home, i typed in VIEW and a box popped up saying "Failed to create property inspector control!" it does the same thing when i go to Named Views in the View tab. does anyone know how i could fix this, or a different way to change the backround properties in a render?
(sorry if this is the wrong section, i just guessed tech would be the best place to put it, tho i think now that graphics would have been better lol. oh well)

well a bunch of us already have the programs and have been, umm, 'completely legally' giving them to eachother, so he doesnt need to worry about buying the software. but yea, on my computer i have a 3 ghz processer but only 1.5 gigs of RAM, and they both seem to run fine for me. sure they can get a little laggy once a lot of complex things are created, but using layers and hiding helps a lot. and i doubt he would be doing anything more complex than me.
hey my friend wants to get a new desktop, a lot of the reason is because he wants windows (he has a mac laptop) and he really wants the AutoCAD 2008 and 3D Studio MAx programs that me a a bunch of my friends got
it does not need to be good at all for gaming, he does not play computer games, only xbox, so dont worry about that.
he talked to someone who recommended this (the 999$ one)
http://www.gateway.com/systems/series/529598059.php
so my question is whether or not this computer will be fine for him, basically just as a normal computer but also for use of cad and max. keep in mind tho that he wont be making any super extreme drawings or anything
advice?
