It cost me 1000 bucks and I am always first in on the server... I don't think you will need to use more then 1500 for an awesome PC if you build it yourself...

This is a very general way of asking. If you're asking what brands to use, you need more help then just brands.

I wouldn't normally do this, not for cougar, but I'm in a generous mood.

Here's a full listing of all components you'll need, and I'll squeeze as much as I can from you're 2,500 limit which is not going to be so hard.

Motherboard: Asus A8N SLI ATX AMD Socket 939
Proc: AMD Athalon 64 3800+
RAM: Corsair XMS 2 gig, 2 stick DDR Kit
Videocard: BFG nVidia 7900 GT PCI Express 16x
Soundcard: Creative x-Fi Xtrememusic 7.1
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar 250Gb SATA 3.0 16 MB Cache
Optical Drive: NEC DVD+-RW Black Bezel
PSU: Antec Truepower 550W
Case: Lian Li v1000 ATX Aluminium

That case is silver, but the black version is "V1000B" If you want to find it elsewhere, It wasn't on Newegg.

All of that together is $1,255.91 USD.

This a "preliminary" list. If anything I'd want to upgrade the proc, PSU and hard drives if you're willing to learn how to set up RAID. Maybe even the video card if you want bragging rights and SLI.

It's late (atleast for me) so I'll subscribe to this topic and work on the list tomorrow.

I'll also need to include the OS, but that's not going to be more then $150, probobly much less.

If you want, I can also find you a good KB, mouse, monitor and speakers but those are generally left for the end user to decide, but I can recommend you some good ones if you're interested.

AMD FX60
Any reputable M2 motherboard with Nforce 590 chipset DFI, Asus leaders of the pack IMHO(AMD M2 is new 940 pin socket allows you to run DDR2 800MHz RAM)
7900 GT(X) EVGA has decent prices for OC'ed and lifetime warranty and 90 day swap period if new chipset comes out.
Ageia PhysX board
2-3GB OCZ DDR2 6400
Creative XiFi Sound
550-600 Watt PSU
Decent case with ATX and BTX capability

Should give you plenty of joy for about 2 years.

nVidia, Intel, custom, porn

Right now I'd go for nVidia, I have no real loyalty to either ATI or nVidia.

Intel, I'm on my third pc now and it's the third Intel in a row. When I bought my Intel PII 300 MHz, my uncle bought an AMD and he had some compatibility problems with it, ever since then I've been kind of wary of AMD. Though I must say that for my next pc I will give AMD some serious consideration.

Custom: Brand pc's are bullshit/overpriced

And you should ALWAYS have porn at the ready, u never know when you might need it and it's better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it.

If you have the time and the knowledge (hehe...I'm sure you have) then I would build a custom pc.

For the board and the graphics I recommend ASUS components. I have made the best experiences with it. Then it's not so important, if you use a Nvidia or an ATI chipset for the graphics. They both rocks. IMO it's important, that the graphics card and the board is from the sam manufacturer, because they're designed for each other.

Furthermore, I would use good and fast RAM's. Corsair makes excellent ones. I have my first Intel processor now, and before I used AMD. Also there I have to say, that I've made good experiences with both. Regarding the price, I would go back to AMD, because I didn't see any advantage using the more expensive Intel prozessor (actually I have a P4 3.2Ghz Dual Core).

Hope, it helps...

You need Vista for running DX10 though... or microsoft will fuck DX10 in windows XP so much its just best to get Vista
I've been playing with Vista for a while now and I just don't like it, the user interface just gets in the way so I find myself disabling Aero and going to "Classic". The control panel is a goddamn atrocious mess, they had things right with the control panel in 2000.

Plus, all configuration windows for everything now take up a stupidly large portion of the screen. Want to change some minor system setting? Well, i'll open up this MASSIVE window with just a few settings. Annoying.

It just doesn't feel elegant, it feels as though they've added these things and designed them through committee. I keep thinking that they've looked at OS X and gone, gee thats a good idea lets use it and add all this pointless stuff!

I hate the fact that I will probably go to Vista when it's released, because of MS making DX10 a Vista only feature.

Oh yeah, goddamn User Account Control. The most annoying thing I have ever had the misfortune to use. "It appears you're looking at a window, are you sure you want to look at it?  Yes/No"
That was the first thing I disabled.

I would wait a few weeks and see what happens with the Conroe release.  The reason I say that is simple.  For gaming purposes, the video card is more important than the CPU, and you performance between an A64 and Conroe would be the same if the video cards were the same, and you weren't running shit resolutions and eye candy settings that have the video card waiting on the CPU.

So, if all you want is a gaming box, watch what happens to the prices once Conroe is released.  If you have other CPU intensive activities, then wait for a larger look at Conroe benchmarks.

If this is a primarily gaming computer, then determine what games you play the most, and see which card will give you the best performance.  Drivers are pretty well on par between ATi and NV; each have their own set of problems.  If BF2 is your primary concern, then ATi is in fact faster.  I can pull benchmarks from multiple sites to back this, and have done so on more than one occassion.  If BF2 is just one of many games, then try to find benchmarks for as many of them as possible, and then weigh your options as to which card will give you the best performance across the entire range of the games you play.
