They had a bit on the beeb last night about when Australia bought back all the major firearms after a massacre in Tasmania(?) and there hasn't been another incident like it. Doesn't prevent the problem of gun crime completely, but it certainly restricts it.

There is no 'practical' solution to speak of in the US because there are too many people that are downright nutty about their guns.
