I associate AQ more with bombing embassies, hotels, shopping centres, transport. That kind of thing with heavy civilian casualties. This looks more like an assassination attempt.

isn't the purpose of all embassy bombings to make a point? to attack a symbol of civil authority? i don't think embassies have high civilian casualties...

It is hard for me to grasp because unlike the jihadists, he hasn't made any such claims yet. If they are so intertwined as you suggest, then there would be a hell of a lot more bombs going off in the name of Christianity right? Get back with me when that start happening, and they start claiming Jesus is the reason for it.

One of the few who knew him, who have spoken so far, was an anonymous friend who told the Norwegian newspaper VG that Breivik had been a far right winger since at least his late twenties, when he had begun posting a series of controversial opinions on Facebook.

What has emerged so far paints a disturbing picture: a Christian fundamentalist with a deep hatred of multiculturalism in his country, of the left and of Muslims who had written disparagingly of prominent Norwegian politicians. A far of violent video games as well who some former neighbours have told Norwegian media had sometimes been seen in
"military-style" clothing.

In the pictures that have so far emerged of him Breivik appears well dressed, slender and clean-shaven, a picture of the young entrepreneur he wanted to be.

Breivik's businesses, however, were not much of a success, each one of them being dissolved after a short while after making a loss until he established his farm business in 2009 and moved out of Oslo.

But the man who listed Kafka and George Orwell's 1984 as his favourite books on Facebook, made little secret to the friends he had, or others on the Christian fundamentalist and far right websites that he frequented, of his racist views.

The darkest side of all was revealed not only in the killings but in how he undertook them, not least on the island teaming with several hundred teenagers, where wearing earplugs and a police uniform he calmly called over his victims to join him so he could begin his
executions.

A Freemason, reportedly a body builder and a hunter with two registered weapons – a Glock pistol and an automatic rifle - it has been Breivik's online profile that has, so far supplied the most public information.

Breivik was also a former "a youth member" of his country's conservative Progress Party – a party he criticised in one posting for embracing "multi-culturalism" and "political correctness" rather than taking an "idealistic stand". Despite that, those who knew him in the party then, described him as "calm and quiet", his extremism coming later.

Wow, and yet again we all understand what his religious views are, now all we need to know is his motive for this act. They 2 are not automatically connected. We have been over this.

i do not see how you can separate one's beliefs on such issues from his 'motives'. would a christian fundamentalism not influence a hatred of muslim immigration? do you think the hatred is completely economical?

There are some pretty amazing stories coming out now from teh survivers of the shooting.... Like the guy who swam from the island to the shore carrying a wounded... Think the distance is around 900 meters.
And the guy who survived by playing dead when the guy killed everyone in the small group he was in. And just stayed quiet when the guy tried to confirm if they were dead and a bullet glanced his shoulder.
Or the girl who hid beneath a boulder while the guy stood on top of it and shot at people in the sea.

It's a tricky one though. I mean, just as a hypothetical, I could say you're a bit unstable because you collect guns. And no one knows if what I'm saying is factual or not until some authority figure decides to approach you for a "chat".

I dunno. Whilst I see where you are coming from and in part agree, it kinda opens the door to encourage anyone who's paranoid about others to notify authorities at whim.

without a doubt it could and would be abused but if at the end of the day 20 people were questioned and 1 was found to be unstable and possible risk, I believe it to be worth it

its not just a bunch of random questions that the officer or whomever would come knocking at my door - its like if you call DSS to investigate child abuse or the 911 system, its a shame on how the 911 system has been abused with people calling for stupid reasons as : people have called because they were given 19 nuggets in a 20 chicken nugget meal
