Hey everybody!
I'm new to these forums although i'm not new to bf2s.com or to BF2 itself.

I've decided to make this post in an attempt to make an addition to the tactical guides of this site which seem to cover very few aspects of the game so far.
So,i hope you like it and consider it a worthy addition to the site. Here goes:

So what are talking about here?

Sniping!!!

Having been a sniper IRL in the Israeli army(notice the idf in my nick) never prepared me to the fact that BF2 actually is very IRL-like when it comes to sniping.I NEVER imagined that any computer game can be made so that tactics learned by real snipers can be applied in-game.but it works, and having tried some of my RL experience in-game and learning from the mistakes of others I came up with these tips:

1.Don't be seen!

2.Take care of your own safety first.

3.One shot,One kill!

These are 3 seemingly simple rules that many people seem to forget.
Rembering them is the first step to being a good sniper.

"But what do they mean? How do I turn these rules of thumb into practice?"

Well, here come the instructions.Use them wisely, and you'll be getting those kills and still yelling for ammo.

1.Don't be seen!

First and foremost:Avoid High places!Don't go on rooftops.Don't go on hilltops.Don't go on the crane in Sharqi.
Don't go on the cycterns in Daqing Oilfields. While being on a high place gives you very good view of the field and (supposedly) allows you to reach a good number of kills it does exactly the opposite!
The Helis,The jets, the commander. All can see you with ease.so whether you'll get a rocket up your proned ass or an artillery strike or just get spotted it makes you a dead sniper. And a dead sniper is what you don't want to be.The guys you're shooting will search on the roofs the first time they realise they're being sniped,so you're not even safe from them.

So where can you hide?
The first answer to that,is that since you don't take the point with the best view how do you choose what to observe?
No perfect answer to that i'm afraid.
But from your knowledge of the game you should know where the enemy passes the most.Your own flag, the exits from his base, the alleys in Karkand, the TV tower in Sharqi, just to name a few. Most of you probably know the spots where players move alot(on foot of course-no point of sniping a tank), So each sniper out there should know those points and prey on them.

Now that you know where you should look, again comes the question:So where can you hide?
Out of sight of course!
So,you've chosen your target area.the choice of hiding spots narrows down to those that observe the target area but manage to keep you concealed.(NO!Leave that roof right this instant!).

What are these places?
Here comes in the true art of finding the perfect location. You'll have to develop your own ability for finding them, but here are the most important guidelines:

Shadows:Lowered the graphics to minimum to get more fps?Won't do.
OK,OK...so at least raise the shadows to medium.Come man!It will pay.Promise.
Already countless times i've managed to hide on street level,Lying on the pavement, and watching people and especially vehicles pass nearby without paying me the slightest attention.

Rooms:Know that room overlooking the mosque in Mashtuur City? No?Well go and scout it out then.
Rooms in buildings exist in the game for only one reason:For snipers to hide in them.
You look out of the window and see all those toy soldiers running around, not aware that there's a guy in the window who can just pull the trigger and send them to a 15 second break. That's good enough, but how about adding a little to your perfect concealment and stepping back from the window a few steps?Yeah, that's right.
Now not only do the walls cover you from all directions, but you can't even be seen through the window itself!
That's right. You are completely swallowed by the darkness of the room(and there's even a coolness outside the hot arab sun ).
The best spot in the world.

Open Ground:Sometimes there's no choice but to use open ground as your position.
"No buildings,no shade.Not good.Gotta think.Think man.Think!"
Well, that's mainly what's required in this kind of situation.Think.The enemy is there. You are here. What will he see when he looks your way? Will he see the sky and your outline painted nicely on the horizon?Or will he see that other hill behind you?Or maybe he'll see the sky,but also some bushes and trees?
You're out there. You tell me.That's should be your main thought when out in the open.
"What will the enemy see when he looks at me?
Your Ghillie suit is mainly brown and green. So what your background of choice? That's right,Brown and green.
Hills, trees, bushes, clay huts. They'll do.Yeah,it is kinda hard to notice you now, isn't it?
And remember:The less you see,the less you are seen.Same applies here.Don't lie on the peak of that hill. How about lying just 5 feet down from the peak(just on the left of it)?
Human eyes(and brains) first look at the highest places.Only after that the rest.(Yeah I know you're thinking about that roof again). So don't do their work for them.Let them seach for you a bit.

Don't move:The human eye is attracted to movement.Very quickly.So Don't move!
You'll be seen the moment you perform a movement. That also includes mouselook!
I told you to get a place where you don't see much.So there's no reason for you to look anywhere anyway.
Especially important on open ground where you might be seen from many directions, but also true for hiding in a room so pay attention that you don't move.Or at least only mouselook.Slightly.

2.Take care of your own safety

You got that perfect position.
"Can I shoot now?"
Not quite yet. It's shorter than the previous section so there's just a bit left.

Simple matter.Someone else wants that room,or finally they found you.Why die just yet?

ClaymoresI don't need to tell you.Only one entrance to the room. You're to busy to watch it every second. So you put the claymore.Dude comes in,dude rests for 15 secs, you get a free kill. And the important part:You stayed alive unbothered.
Two precautions:
1.There's always the teammate who'll stumble on your claymore.Everybody does it.I did it too...Shit happens.Yeah, they see the skull sign.I don't know what they're thinking.Take this into consideration and decide if you're willing to take the risk of a team kill.
2.The guy who just stepped on your claymore knows where you are now,and you only got 2 of them claymores.Be sure he'll come back to hunt you. With his friends. This brings us the next part of staying safe:

Switch positions:Yeah, that's a great spot.Feel free to use it again later.Much later.
But right now they're on to you.you killed them so much that they figured out where you are and are coming to kill you.
But you're one step ahead of them.Just as you killed your 6th guy in 10 seconds it's the time to leave and find a new spot. What? You really like that spot?Well,it's your funeral...Just leave.Yep.Now.Leave.Pick another one.Yep.Leave.Bye bye.

Know your surroundings:IDF doesn't use claymores.I never learned how to use any kind of explosives.
But there are other ways to protect your busy ass from a backstab.Be aware of the map.maybe ask for a UAV.Or just try to think if some enemies have some reason to get behind you...
Think,Think,Think!
Don't get caught off guard.

3.One shot,One Kill!

That's it!You've reached the shooting part!

Now just make sure you hit your target.
Luckily the game doesn't deal with sniping or sharpshooting techniques so you don't even have to know them!
All you do have to know:Shoot stationary targets.Take a moment to aim for the head and you'll get the kill.
He just moved?Don't shoot.
Those perfect shots will come more frequently and will take less time to align with practice. Then they will become automatic for you.

You wanna shoot moving targets? Can't help you.Practice,practice,practice.
I can give you two ways of aiming at moving targets. You can choose the one that works best for you:

1.Ambush:You want to shoot this guy who runs?you just put the crosshair where his head should be in a few seconds and wait.Just as he's about to touch the crosshair you pull the trigger. The exact timing is up to you and you need to practice it alot and still won't reach 100% success.but it's possible.

2.Leading:Same guy,he runs, you wanna hit.All you have to do is move the crosshair a small bit in front of him and keep that distance constant.(he moves right, you keep the crosshair a bit to the right of him)
when you're confident enough that you're aligned perfectly you fire.
Personally i find the first method better but it really is a matter of personal preference for everybody.

That's about it!
Wanna be the next Vasily Zaitzev from "Enemy at the gate"?Or maybe Beckett for "Sniper"?
In BF2 you might be...
Just remember.Don't be seen,Take care of your safety,One shot, one kill.

P.S. In the game, the M24 will allow you to make easy headshots. You aim correctly, you hit.
The rest of the sniper weapons are less precise and don't get the same results always.Even the M95.
So with them you should consider shorter ranges.

Hope you liked it and thanks to M90Medic who inspired me to write from my own military experience as he did with his support class guide.

srry buddy, i'll sum this up in a couple sentences. lie down, aim shoot, run with pistol, shoot, rinse and repeat and spice with claymores if necesarry and continue playing.....and the shadows thing. doesn't mean nething, shadows aren't rendered at far distances b/c welll...thats just how the game is so the guy probably didn't see you b/c you weren't his objective. i'll say that i did like how you didn't underestimate your enemy. hey maybe we should have a snipe off someday

I dont think raising the shadows on your personal PC will cause shadows to appear from some one elses view from their lowered settings on their PC.  Just stay back and hope theirs is cranked up.

Good work on the how-to....these things take some time

Just wondering...

Is sniping that hard, or over popular?
I mean this is the 8th sniper guide or so... No offence, thanks for the effort and such, but still...

The shadows do not effect any one elses computer, but it is good advice.  I have had a blackhawk that is caping a flag with 2 gunners hover close enugh that I could aim and kill the gunner.  He just did not see me hiding in the shadow untill it was to late.

Personaly, I like rooftops, but it has to be a particular type.  Thier must be objects on the roof.  A flat roof is near instant death.  A multi level roof gives you some nice hiding and cover spots.  Also, try to avoid the common roof top sniper error.  Don't get THAT close to the edge.  I have killed snipers with my pistol because thier head and arms was showing over the side of the building.  Just your rifle barrel is not to bad, most people would not notice it. . . unless your firing.  You add an arm, or worse 2 arms and a head to that, and your asking for some one to shoot you from the gound.

inside buildings is the best though.  at least in my opinion.  Overall this guide covers the basics that any one who wants to snipe should know.  Yet you should pick this up rather quickly if you spend time sniping.  The fact that people on top of hills are the first ones you spot and kill should be enugh to make you avoid them.
Honestly the only more advanced advice you can realy give out is exact tactics.  Such as where to stand, which windows are best, what areas have the best view of battle fields on which maps.  How to use the vodnick to reach some odd locations people will not normaly look, ect.

My god, two new Sniping guides in one night. That's gotta be some kind of record.

And yeah, ComradeWho's guide is the best and should be stickied or something.

Kinda Hazy Memory, who made this?

I'd consider Comrades to be more definitive, whilst mine is more of a beginners guide to sniping.

What do these guides do anyways if the rifles aren't optimized for precision?

I had the situation which I always get yesterday...I can hit running targets on ranges of about 300 meters,no problem, but on 40-50 meters where the head is really, really big and visible in my sight and the crosshairs are pointed right between the eyes - no hit at all....

I think it's similar to the disappearing tankshells, the bullet just gets lost in the netcode,I can't imagine that I would miss such a sure shot (online-sniper for life)...

one thing i like to do which most people disagree with is to stay in the same position when sniping at the enemy. i know they will eventually locate my position and come after me but i find it easier to take out targets that are coming after me from a distance. i never snipe from a position i am not familiar with. it is usually a place where i can see most of the avenues of attack by the enemy towards my position. and no, i never snipe from high places like cranes and rooftops.

even if i die, which is always a guarantee after a few kills and kill assists or because i ran out of ammo, it is worth it. i have done my job of clearing the enemy base for my team to capture or have defended our flag.

Feature Post Request.

I really enjoyed this guide. I understand that English isn't necessarily your first language, andI found this very easy to understand.

Some really nice tips there. I'll try them out next time I get on the battlefield. Porblem is, most maps don't have many infantry, apart from the City maps.

The only problem with sniping this way is it takes so long to set up you dont get any points. Since there's no penalty for dying, you have to adjust your tactics to that.

The shadows definitely give away enemy positions, and it has helped me plenty of times before.
An example of a time in which shadows helped me out was on Sharqi peninsula, at the construction site. An enemy was at the top, and I was at the bottom with a team mate about to enter, and suddenly I look at the wall near me to see a shadow. I think look up to the right and see an enemy sniper aiming at me, and I took off running and later killed him.

Of course sniping in BF2 is a bit harder than sniping for the IDF. Typically your targets in BF2 are armed. In BF2 there are a distinct lack of schools full of Palestinian schoolchildren to snipe at.
