Still looking for my first 'squatch. This guy was easily 400lbs, so more in the American-style sasquatch as opposed to the lithe, bohemian Euro version.

Still pretty prevalent in my experience. Maybe not as bad as the Phillipines but i know its still a thing in Laos.uziq wrote:

It's crazy that sex work is so prevalent in SEA that Isan families literally send their daughters to Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Siem Reap etc to work in prostitution to support the extended families back home. Worst part of visiting that area is seeing the old pervs with young girls.
REI is in the midst of their annual Memorial Day sale and I've been loading up on some clothes for my backpacking trip next month. I've bought a few hiking hoodies, an outer shell, and some new hiking pants. Its been a bit of a struggle not to go ham and buy more sets of gear, but I already have more camping gear than I know what to do with.

Terrible, terrible movie
Recently read Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Easy read, which was a nice distraction from this stupid pop-econ book I'm still struggling through. GF read it first and recommended it. It's refreshing to read a book in a different writing style than I'm used to.
I have a few things lined up over the next two months but thinking about hitting Asia in July or August. I'll let you know

Still no job. Haven't been applying as much lately, but may have an opportunity at a company a friend works for. If I don't get an interview I'm probably going to just take my foot off the gas and relax/refresh for a few months. Maybe take a trip somewhere.
Saw The Prestige recently for the first time. Excellent movie. A little grandiose but the writing, story, acting, and direction were top notch. The best Christopher Nolan movie I've seen.

That whole clique put out some of the most iconic rap of the late 90s/early 2000s. Punching above their weight. Souls of Mischief, Styles of Beyond, Heirogylphics. That bay area rap sound was pretty unique.
Chance to see Del, Dan the Automator and Kid Koala. Can't turn that down
Deltron 3030 are going on tour and doing their whole debut album. One of the venues is 15 mins away. Definitely going

the really bad ones take over your phone and turn it into an improvised alarm. i was awoken once, last summer, at about 5am in the morning with a female voice shouting 'WARNING! WARNING!'. only time i've ever experienced one at that grade. i woke up and made a yelping noise i've never heard myself emit before in my life. great fun.
there's an app called NERV which is pretty cool, not sure if it has coverage in the states. great for giving information in near real-time.
It's crazy that I can get an emergency notification on my phone of an impending earthquake. I felt the jot about 10 seconds later.
I think thats my first experience receiving a heads up prior to an earthquake happening.

Please please tell me those blue post it notes are to deaignste the project and job? Looks like quality still has a few more to sign off on.
The funny thing is in both instances (Uzi's mixer and Dilbs sub controls) the product is expensive for the same reasons- highly engineered design moat, highly reliability, long-term sustainability of the platform, high mix/low volume manufacturing.
You guys have a lot in common when you talk product!

The half marathon is the only thing I'd be worried about. I ran a 5k a few years ago more or less straight off the couch. 10k isn't much if you've been running consistently, even with 2 weeks off.

Its more of a "go up the chain" type of process. First round was with the technical recruiter. Next round was hiring manager only. Third round was hiring manager and someone in the same type of role in an adjacent part of the business. 4th round is with hiring manager and panel of VPs. 5th round is with department heads id be interacting with. Not really sure what comes after that?
I've had to take assessment tests for a few of the jobs I applied to. Most are pretty straightforward and easy to game. On a spectrum of strongly disagree to strongly agree, how would you rate the following: "I know my way is the right way all the time".
I did have to take a wonderlic test for a role i ultimately turned down. I had only heard of them because the NFL gives the test to potential quarterback draftees.kind of reminded me of old IQ tests I took when I was younger. I missed 1 out of 50 questions, and it had to do with folding some shape.

Third interview last week went well I think. I was told it could take as many as nine interviews before they make an offer. It's a big boy role, as more of a strategic/thought leader than a day-to-day management role, but im not applying to be the CEO of Apple.KEN-JENNINGS wrote:

Ive been watching Severance. It's an interesting show. Not quite a great show, but its got some moments that make me think a little about our existence and what it means to be human. It is slow as hell, and i find the occasional levity to be at odds with the overall serious, somber mood they are trying to create, but if I peer closely I think I can see what the show runners are trying to put down. The soundtrack/score is also pretty well done.
Im concerned that it's built up this heavy, existential end game that will ultimately fail really badly, but im intrigued to see what comes.
Some of the acting is stupidly over the top, but i think Jon Turturro and Adam Scott are great in it.

Just take your watch to a watchmaker and have him remove a few links. Just make sure he gives you back the pins and screws. I have little baby wrists so I have to get links taken out of every watch I get.
It's important to find someone who knows their shit. Go into a watch repair shop and ask him about how often a submariner should be serviced. If he gives a 15 minute autistic lecture on watch repair and how to properly service dive watches to make sure they stay waterproof, he's your guy.
I can give you some recs in NJ/NY if you want

No one says you have to enjoy your job, but you should at least strive to be great at it.

Seth Abramson has an interesting theory:uziq wrote:
who would have guessed that introducing tariffs on your biggest trading partners of 25% or whatever would cause a recession?!
musk and co. want to derail the economy. it will give them further justification for deeper cuts, more downsizing of government, more deletion of regulations and cutting of red tape. they will repackage the pain they're purposefully inflicting on the populace as 'necessary medicine', and suggest upping the dose. total state capture by their own private corporate interests is basically the aim.

I think ol' Seth is giving all the players a little too much credit in the conspiracy he weaves, but enough of it makes sense to seriously consider it.

I use one iteration of passwords for bullshit. Another, stronger iteration for sites I regularly use, utilities, etc. Then a much stronger subset of passwords for any financial logins. I also have a bank account and card specifically for use online.
I do the same sort of segmentation with email addresses.
It's not foolproof, but i prefer it to having to use a password manager.

i think it's pretty sad/funny that wicked now has more oscars than the entirety of david lynch's filmography. RIP.

I had a 3rd round interview today. Went about as well as it could. I forgot about the game you have to play when applying to jobs. That part is kind of annoying. I did get complimented on "having the best meeting background I've ever seen" by the person interviewing me, because my girlfriend's baby grand is in our office and does serve as a nice backdrop.

I think one of the reasons Kendrick had a resurgence last year was because he said a lot of things people in the culture thought about Drake but wouldn't say. Not Like Us could be put into the broader context of the commercialization and exploitation of black culture over the last 20 years or so, and seen as a push back or recapture of the art form from pop-heavy Drake to someone more in tune with being black in Ameica. Viewed through this lens, it's not hard to see why it became so popular so quickly. And because life is a flat circle full of irony, the song about how "they" aren't like "us" become a sing-a-long track at the biggest exhibition of American commercialization.
Armand Hammer is solid. Black Thought and Danger Mouse released a pretty great album back in 2022 that has more or less been on my playlists since.

I like GKMC, even have a first pressing on vinyl. I think the bar is set so low with mainstream rap that when someone comes along and doesn't rap about women and guns and drugs, they get championed.
A lot of people cite his voice/tonality as the reason they don't listen to him. Rap has been so hypercommercialized and pillaged by BIG MUSIC that it's tough for artists to distinguish themselves. Remember when emo rap was a thing?

I'm pretty set on never backpacking in grizzly territory. Black bears are pretty harmless. I've come across a few out in the wild.
I've never had a bad interaction with rangers.
One time when I was backpacking in Yosemite we left a cooler out overnight (last day at camp after returning from the bush, many celebratory beers and Jagermeister) instead of putting it in the bear locker. There was a nice note from a ranger about the requirement to lock up food, but no fine.
When i did an overnight at a local trail/mountain, I ended up drinking whiskey with the ranger.
A little different, but when I was backpacking up in SEKI a few years ago someone had to get airlifted out We chatted up the two SAR guys that landed their helicopter on the shore of the lake we were camping by.
All great interactions. Park rangers get paid shit, love their jobs, and are a great resource. I TTFTS anytime I see them.
