Mark I
Mark II
Mark III
LC9

Those 4 alone are enough to completely ruin me on Rugers FOREVER.  The Mark I- III's have got to be the most over complicated, user unfriendly and overall BAD designs of a pistol I've ever seen.  The inevitable dumbass comes along and argues to me "But it's just a .22" or, It's so accurate and easy to shoot."  No.  1st off, an experienced gun owner knows that accuracy and ease to shoot are one thing, but no firearm is worth a damn if it simply doesn't work or is close to impossible to clean.

A friend brought a Mark 3 over for me to clean (I clean on the side for extra cash and because I like taking guns apart), he said he hadn't ever cleaned it because he couldn't figure out how to get it apart.

I immediately recognized how to get it apart and got halfway through before the bolt assembly became jammed because the internal hammer was in the wrong position.  I had to beat on the pistol with a wooden stick to coax the hammer down.  Once down the gun required no more dis-assembly because it essentially fell apart in my hands.  The sheer amount of unnecessary nooks and crannies was baffling to me as they made no sense and acted only as giant carbon traps.  Once the gun was cleaned I started to re-assemble.  The barrel would not stay on the frame as the gun did not catch it properly and to be awkwardly held in place while the rest of the gun was assembled.  Once the barrel was on, the hammer needed to be in the down position to insert the bolt assembly, but once the bolt assembly was in, the hammer needed to be in the up position, BUT, not to far as a little metal piece that dangled had to fit into a small crack of the spring lever.  Getting the hammer at just the correct angle required holding the pistol at an awkward angle and using a screwdriver to hold it in place.  You almost had to have 3 hands to do it correctly.

Come to find out, if it was not in the absolute perfect position when the spring lever was closed the entire pistol would jam up and I do mean jam.  If it jammed the safety would not move, the bolt assembly could not move, the gun could not be cocked and the spring lever would not come out without the use of a screwdriver.  The only way to un-jam the gun without forcing it was to once again beat on it with a wooden stick.  After 3 attempts I finally managed to get the gun back together, but now the trigger would not drop the hammer.  I disassembled the pistol again to investigate and found the hammer was not sitting flush with the gun.  Turns out, the internal workings of the trigger assembly are held together with push pins, as is the hammer, as is the magazine spring and guess what happened while I had to beat on it with the wooden stick?  The fucking push pins came loose and the entirety of the inner grip assembly had essentially fallen apart.  After putting everything back together for a fourth time the gun would finally cycle and the hammer fell on the trigger pull.  I insert a mag to test fire and the magazine keeps falling out.  Another push pin problem.  Resolve that.  Finally fire the gun.  Nothing impressive.  I shot no better with it than I do with my colt revolver .22.

I am well versed with guns and how to work on them and never have I seen such a nightmare.  I've repaired, stripped, assembled, cleaned, and shot more guns than I can remember in my life and that little pistol was the worst.  Is it accurate?  Yes.  Did it fit me good?  Yes.  However the difficulty of maintenance drops the score to 0/10 in my book as an average Joe would have a 0% of figuring that shit out when it came time to clean his gun.  How Ruger could field test something like this and say "Yes, this is civilian worthy model and it's as good as we can make it" on not one but THREE different versions of this pistol blows my mind.

I won't go into as much detail on the LC9 but it is just a piece of shit.  I friend bought one and we went to shoot it about a week later.  The gun felt like shit in my hand, had horrible sights and the magazine fell out of the gun no less than 4 times while shooting over the 2 hours we where there.  It reminded me very much of a Hi-Point pistol a co-worker brought to me once.  Just a rush made, poorly designed hunk of shit designed for poor people and fanboys.

People like to applaud Ruger for their effectiveness at building revolvers.  I'm not a fan of revolvers, I do own a few but I inherited them.  My take on revolvers is after 160+ years of making revolvers and refining the process.....how do you fuck up a revolver?  Way to go, they can make easy to manf, time tested, pre-existing designs without fucking it up and put nice grips and stamp a pretty logo on them.  Way to go Ruger.  Ya'll are my hero for sure.

ok.

i don't have any experience with those particular models, and i can see that after hands on experience that you do.

i don't happen to agree with the statement 'Rugers are garbage' because of my experience the ones i have owned or used have worked flawlessly.

i hope that you can see how a simple statement will rub someone the wrong way. i do applaud you for backing up your statement - all i'll ask is don't go full retard if someone doesn't happen to agree with it.

Well I am assuming at this point you are a revolver guy and as I said, it's hard to fuck up a revolver (although I have seen some obscene revolvers with barrel on bottom cylinder on top).  I can appreciate your point of view and I appreciate the fact that you appreciate mine.

Appreciation station.

So my brother owns a Remington 870 that he uses for target shooting. He's already got a soft case for it. Would a speed loader be a good gift?

If he is only using it for target shooting, get him an extended magazine tube.

Alright.  Let's put it this way.

Go to youtube and do a search for how to disassemble a glock or a 1911.  You get a lot of hits, the videos are typically 5min long and they dont have a lot of views.

Now do a search for a mark 1 disassembly.  There's a shit ton more, millions of combined hits.  Like this video:

The guy even says tons of people are having issues with it and has to dispel a myth that the gun is "hard" to take apart.  When your fucking gun REQUIRES a screwdriver and a hammer to take a part and put back together, you have a POOR design.  AR-15, AK-47's, 1911's, fuck even M249's and grenade launchers are easier to take apart, and this is a fucking .22LR.  I also love how one of the steps to disassemble the gun is "beat on it with a hammer until that thing falls down in there".

Top Comment on one of the videos I just watched.

"i took my ruger apart and after 3 days prayed OHH GOD LET ME GET IT BACK TOGETHER ILL NEVER TAKE IT APART AGAIN!  thanks for the vid"

Super good gun bro.  60 years of fucking over people who don't have advanced gun knowledge.

I used to strip and clean Ruger MKIIs on a daily basis without tools.
If you're not reliant on god to help you its pretty easy, although its a beginners range pistol so its hardly a big deal if it takes time to strip and clean - it was designed for cheap manufacture after all.

Those Glocks are awesome though, its a shame no American ever designed anything which came close.

Moe probably takes care of his and has done it numerous times.  The one I had hadn't been cleaned in several years and I had no experience with it.  The point is, it's an obsolete design that's still being manufactured.

SKS was a norinco import factory made paratrooper model. Didn't need to be cut down. Fire's awesomely. I've only put around 150 rounds through it just to sight in the reflex sight. All I had to do was remove rear leaf sight and remove front sight post.

Pro's
Center of weight allows it to be held nicely with one hand
Overall length is perfect
Price
7.62
Holds It's Zero

Cons
11lbs with loaded mag
Can be clunkly
Since it's 7.62 and it has a 16" barrel, the recoil is a little bit more than I'd like
Magazine removal takes some practice but can be easily learned

I love this weapon. It does take some familiarization but it's not too bad. Great fun, great looks, great price.

EDIT: I read through the posts and I did want to address the trigger pull. It litteraly is spot on! the spring inside has a nut to turn to adjust as needed per sks which is awesome! They did an amazing job on the stock and the trigger pull on mine is as good as the AR's I own. Couldn't have been happier.

I have a winchester model 94. It's pretty good, I'm waiting on getting a recoil pad for it. Kicks like a mule. Stay away from winchesters made past the 1970s. Their receivers are very poor quality and they rattle a lot. They're stamped instead of machined.

you should get a lever rifle in .357/.38.  that would be more "cowboys and indians" than a 30-30.  cheaper too.  Winchester, Marlin, or any of the CAS makers can outfit you.
