The rate law for the decolorization reaction has the form:

where
[R+] is the concentration of the colored form of crystal violet expressed in moles/liter
k is the rate constant of the reaction at a particular temperature
n is the order of the reaction with respect to crystal violet
m is the order of the reaction with respect to sodium hydroxide

In this experiment, the reaction order with respect to each reactant and the value of the rate constant at room temperature will be determined.

The reaction order with respect to R+ will be determined first. The concentration of sodium hydroxide in the reaction mixture will be much greater than that of the crystal violet. It is so much larger, that even after all of the crystal violet has reacted, the sodium hydroxide concentration has not changed very much.
yeah i knew all of this, most of it is pretty basic.

but whatever, i turned it in.  we'll see what happens

"Joe’s wealth is $100 and he is an expected utility maximizer with a von  Neumann-Morgenstern utility function in which  v(c)= c^(1/2) . Joe is afraid of oversleeping
his economics exam. He figures there is only a 1 in 10 chance that he will, but if he does, it will cost him $100 in fees to the university for taking an exam late. Joe’s neighbor, Mary, never oversleeps. She offers to wake him one hour before the test, but he must pay her for this service. What is the most that Joe would be willing to pay for this wake-up
service?"

I can't seem to figure this damn thing out.
Maybe it's because I keep wondering what kind of wake up service they are talking about

But in all seriousness, how does one solve this?

Find expected utility of not paying her (ie, taking the risk of not waking up)
Find the fixed wealth (c, I'm guessing) that gives the same utility
$100-c= max he'll pay

^^ just put different values for x and y and you should have identical but shifted graphs??

The slope of the curve is the marginal rate of substitution, e.g. MUx/MUy (MUx being U'(x))

The position of the curve can be anywhere, really, doesn't really matter (it's the slope that's important). So just set any utility when drawing it up.

Nah, pick a random number for U and x, and find y from there. That'll be a point on the curve, -MRS is the slope.

I hate economics/accounting...

anyone?

Which of the following can change without shifting either demand or supply, ceteris paribus?
    a. Incomes
    b. The prices of other goods
    c. The price of the good itself
    d. Expectations

my book doesn't really answer this question so I don't understand why the fuck it was asked.

I feel like all of these answers are subject to personal opinion.

and the answer is a. INCOME? I think yes.

jay is right, you have to really understand the meaning of ceteris paribus

seems like a pretty broad question.
I mean it could be income ( but inferior, normal goods?), price of other goods ( but substitute, complementary?)....

but right now, price of other goods seems like the right answer.

I took the question to be non-substitute products. They aren't going to base the price of a tv off of a vaccuum, they have separate demand curves.

okay Excel is busting my balls. Here's the question:

Joanne Krol wants to purchase a newer model automobile to replace her rusty 1989 car. The bank where Joanne has a checking account, US Bank, is advertising an annual interest rate of 6.75 percent for a three-year loan on used cars. By selling her old car and using some cash she has accumulated, Joanne has $3,000 available as a down payment. Under her current budget, Joanne figures that the maximum monthly loan payment she can afford is $300. She wants to find out the maximum car price she can afford and keep the monthly payment no higher than $300. She cannot alter the interest rate or the three-year term. Use the Excel Goal Seek command to figure out the highest purchase price Joanne can afford.
I have my sheet set up like this

https://i.imgur.com/N5UWD.png

And Goal Seek set like this

https://i.imgur.com/SBvwT.png

So why does it keep returning the purchase price as a negative number?

e: Nevermind, figured it out! Had to change the PMT formula to -B5. Since you're going into debt.
