I'll pay for the quality, durable item regardless of the country of origin. Who wants to have to buy the same thing six times? That said, I do get a residual pride thing when I do buy stuff made in the USA but I think it's just leftover marketing from the Buy USA ad campaigns that used to run 24/7 when I was a kid.
This pretty much describes me, too. I pick the best product (in my price range) but am happy when that best product is American made. But I also agree that if I go into an authentic Western wear store, I would be disappointed by seeing it all made elsewhere. It impacts "the experience."

That being said, I can't afford most authentic Western wear, and would end up buying the foreign stuff and mumbling under my breath... Lol.

I buy NZ products or from other countries with a good rep (eg. Australia, US, Japan) over cheap stuff even if its more expensive.  The quality/longevity is worth it.  You do get the odd good quality product from cheaper countries, but generally stuff from the developed world lasts longer/tastes better/isn't as likely to be contaminated/etc

Not really when it comes to most goods. Food yeah no shit buy local. As much as I hate chinese goods they've gotten a lot better in quality. Hell knock off iphones perform better than regular iphones now...

Yep, my one of my Japanese vehicles was made 20 miles from my house and that company has probably indirectly paid my wages for most of my working life.

My experience of buying stuff from China versus local made is you go through at least 2 of the products made in China before 1 made local.

I usually pay more for a product because its better made and will last.

Aren't all iphones made in china/thailand/taiwan/somewhere ?

Nothing is crap just because its made somewhere else. Due to labour cost differences in china you might be paying for 5 times as much labour as you do for a local product, hence the local one dies 1st. It all depends on what you are buying, every country makes cheap crap and most make expensive crap too.

Grandmother made a 2nd trip to Australia and the 2 things I requested was a boomerang made in Australia and a stuffed kangaroo toy made in australia for my 2 year old

She swears she looked everywhere but both items were made in china

In my store I try to seek out the " touristy " items that are made in the US but as the years tick on its getting harder and harder

The new trend is slapping a " Designed in the USA " sticker on a item but if you flip the item over you can still find Made in China

The music store I work in buys and sells used instruments.  Some lady came in and sold this and I couldn't help but laugh.  I give you..  The Colt model acoustic guitar from the American series by The Indiana Guitar Company...   made in China.

There is also a huge difference in price between the American vs. import guitar price.

It always seemed to me that a guitar is one of those things where you get what you pay for.

yeah and american fenders fetch an extortionate price because they are american. mexican fenders are constructed just as well but because they're made over the border in less pristine factories they cost 25% less. japanese always seem to wire the best fenders, too, so there's an iconic "made in the usa" brand for you in a nutshell.

To Jay: Nope, not really... I have a killer Yamaha Pacifica 521 that was $200 new (16 or 17 years ago). I like the action on it and the sound of it much more than my USA made '97 Fender Strat that was 3 times as much, JUST BECAUSE it is a Fender Strat...

A buddy of mine had an Ibanez that he paid about $150 for, and he liked it better than either of mine. The sound was about the same as the Strat, but it was weighted drastically different.

Guitars are a great example of buying what it the best for you, regardless of where it is made... And yet paying an assload more for the "Made in the USA."

Unless you can afford a Les Paul... Then it really is the best... LOL
