I need a word of advice.

I'm going back to college after the summer to my HND in Software Development, but I've found a Modern Apprenticeship in pretty much THE area I want to work in, here's the link:

Now, I'm going to apply for it, as this is a great first step for me to get into the industry, if I get it, and complete it, I'll have Microsoft certifications, amongst other, which I wouldn't get at college.

How good an entry into the world of IT is this?

i am it consultant so that no tech stuff like strategy/performance/security and those qualification wont help.

I would try to do school and this job at the same time. A degree with good grades will open up opportunities for promotion or a better employer. A friend of mine recently got her CIS degree from a decent school in Mass. Straight out of school she got a job at Microsoft. But she's much more intelligent than you, Camm.

technically, i'm not. to answer the OP, i may not be the best person to ask right now.

experience > college degree > certs, but honestly all 3 don't guarantee a job. all three do guarantee you will have your resume looked at.
Knowing someone > experience > college degree > certs is the best way to get in.

This. Stay in school cam. Work on the certs while your obtaining experience after school.

Certs are going to be expected, degree or not. The degree (and performance getting it) will get you a leg up over someone without a degree. And remember, you'll still be getting the certs later, regardless.

Thing you guys dont understand is the qualifications i'll get. I'm at your equivelant of community college cause i fucked about at school. No degree for me for at least 6 years if i go to uni.

Should i take the apprenticeship now, or get my hnd (nowhere near degree level) and then go for a job.

The degree with those certs will get you off the helpdesk faster. MCTS and A+ are nice to have, but I feel my degree is what sets me apart.

Certs are a great plus, but the degree also impresses. Also, A+ is Your thoughts, insights, and musings on this matter intrigue me...

I say go for the degree, but only because the degree can get you a job in other countries and is pretty well recognised as a higher standard that this apprenticeship. From the job description, they were pretty vague on what you would be doing exactly. It could be data entry for all you know. Maybe apply for the job and ask all the serious questions about the role, training, etc and see what you walk away with after the interview.

Upon completion, apprentices will be qualified in the following areas:

Microsoft Certification Technical Specialist (MCTS)
CompTIA A+
City & Guild Diploma and Certificate
Essential Skills for Apprentices

You've said that a degree would take you 6 years, ask the university you're looking to apply to if any of the above could be applied towards credit. You could get lucky and cut the degree down to a 4 year course after finishing the apprenticeship and walk away with both.

What to study depends on what you want to do. For server/networkey stuff I'd do MCSE (or whatever its called now), A+ and CCNA.

I did a computer science degree and spent a bit of my own time learning webstuff (PHP etc) and am currently doing web & android development.

I'm going to apply for it, because I can then make a decision based upon whether I get accepted or not. The only deciding factor if I get it is - more money if I go to college as I'll get a student loan. I'm in the position where I'll enjoy either, I can't wait to go back to college, because I had a blast last year doing what I did, but if I go for the app'ship then I'll be in th industry
