I could have sworn that I read something about giving you experience for laying down suppressive fire...maybe I'm imagining that.
If so, I would figure that as you start firing a support weapon a little progress bar shows your "progress" with suppressing the enemy, and then gives you a small amt of points after x amt of time.
Add in the kicking-up-dust effects that were mentioned, and it might actually become a viable tactic.
However that's all conjecture, and the ramifications of this would be pretty hilarious, with all of the unskilled players simply spraying near-endless bullets non-stop all round just to be able to earn some points...
