Here's a picture of the slide and barrel removed from the frame.  The mechanism is actually quite simple.  It's basically an AR15 cycling mechanism shrunk down to operate on a pistol frame.  Combustion gas flows through a port in the barrel, pushing on the small piston at the front of the slide.  The rearward motion of the slide unlocks the rotating bolt from the breech allowing the spent cartridge to eject and a fresh round to chamber.  You can also see the dual recoil springs.

Here's a picture illustrating just how large the .50 Action Express cartridge is.  Left to right:  .22LR, 9X19mm, .45acp, .50AE.

I enjoy letting other people shoot it almost as much as shooting it, myself.  it's very heavy and very accurate.  And very expensive to shoot at about $1.75 per boom.  It's definitely the least sensible gun I own.

That's such a stupid gun.. but so magnificent.

Some people go through that much in a day at the range (just usually not with a mosin!)
Yah I was joking, we go shooting all the time and he loves his mosin. I prefer skeet but to each their own. I think he has about 2500 rounds between his three guns (Remington 870, Remington 700, and the Mosin).

Hard to say, the recoil isn't the same as a "normal" handgun.  I'd guess maybe 3-4X as intense as a 45.

Years ago, a friend of mine had a Desert Eagle .50AE at the range, while I was shooting my High Power MkIII 9mm.

For every one aimed shot he got off, I managed three or so.

Something like;

pop-pop-pop-BOOOOOOM-pop-pop-pop-BOOOOOM-pop-pop-pop-BOOOOOOM

Desert Eagle doesn't hammer you like a similar caliber revolver would.
Gas operated mechanism on the DE makes it more of a forceful shove, rather than a revolver with a straight punch.
But even if the DE isn't hammering you as bad as a revolver, it's still a massive beast that takes a bit longer to get back on target than a standard HP or 1911 even.

Shooting a DE is fun, and relatively easy (as long as you're not a frail toothpick).
Shooting one well, though, takes quite a bit more work.

so, who makes a good tool for removing the primer crimps you get on some .223 brass?

Mateba autorevolver.  I don't actually own one, but I kind of want one just cause of the oddity of the design.

I've never had the chance to handle one but they're supposed to be very smooth and very accurate.

Which is why I'd pick an HP every time.

Were his shots at all accurate?

lol, it's not really a choice.  that's like saying a volvo is a more practical grocery getter than an apache chopper.  my DE is just a toy.  it's too heavy and the recoil is too much for any kind of home defense.  and if i fired it in a dark room I'd probably temporarily blind myself.

Well, I like Volvos and HPs.

Does a DE have any practical use as a pistol in any situation? Apart from making a big bang.

Concealed carry with a HK Mk23 as a backup.

practical use?  i suppose it's as practical as any other gun i own.  it shoots bullets.  i don't live in somalia, so i can't speak to my DE's combat effectiveness.  but i will say it's fucking amusing to shoot and it's accurate.  I suppose I could shoot silhouettes or hunt critters, but I don't really need a fucking practical reason to own any gun.

One of the reasons why I bought the USP45. Watched it earlier today. Best scene ever in a movie.

Same reason as a Koenigsegg or a gucci handbag.

It does the same job as any other gun, but it's amusing and makes you look different, maybe cooler.

the "cool" factor doesn't come from the gun.  it's the predator style tri-beam laser target designator and  official desert eagle ankle holster that let people know I'm a cool customer.

What about as a backup weapon for hunting, in case you come across a grizzly?
