Aw, you're cute.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

So I have steelseries siberias right now, the intermediate jack that goes into the volume control is messed up to the point that I have to have the jack sitting at just the right position (partially, not fully inserted [that's what she said]) in order to have sound coming out from both sides. Considering these are about two years old and my last pair lasted about the same length, I think it's time for a new set.

I'm not just foaming at the mouth to drop a lot of coin, but Sennheiser 555s are a good buy for the money yes? Meaning that the 595 mod is a no-brainer, and they are expected to last for a long while (more than two years) under normal use (not slamming them against the wall when I get fragged) right? Again I don't want to spend money for the sake of it but I will be using these practically every day for as long as they last, I don't want to buy a piece of junk that either sounds bad or won't hold up. I can get them for $130 + shipping right now.

... so what exactly is this 595 mod? I mean, i know how to do it, but is it anything more than placebo effect?

i mean like, how does cutting part of the plastic improve the sound?

You take foam out of the soundstage that was put there to dampen the sound.

So... it gives a slight frequency boost at 2k? at 200? That's what I'm asking, what exactly does it do.
I'd rather get the HD 380's (or even 280) than void a warranty, tbh...

Sennheiser 555s are amazing. My pair are so comfortable, I can wear them for over 8 hours before they get sore, and even then it's barely noticeable. I modded mine, and you can notice a distinct difference. The audio sounds a lot .. fuller. It's hard to explain. You can feel the drivers moving a lot more, especially on loud bassy songs. I got mine for just under £90, so $130 is a damn good deal. Worth every pound tbh.

Inside the can (I think that's the right term) there's a small sticky back piece of foam that blocks about 35% of the air intake holes. By removing this, air can be taken in much more easily. As for the technical side of what it does, I'm not sure, but it's definitely noticeable and sounds a lot better.

I did the soundstage mod to my 555's but i can't say i really noticed much of a difference. That said, i hadn't used them for ages before i did it

GF hasn't noticed any difference but i don't really think that says much either.

More importantly, what are the chances of actually damaging the headset trying to do the soundstage mod? I mean if it really is little to no difference/placebo effect I don't really care so long as it is only time wasted, not a significant risk to breaking the headset.

Next to none.

The only real risk is when you are taking them apart, since you have to pry it open, not just screws.

even that's no problem. The foam thing that goes around your ear comes off easily, since it's build to be removable. The rest uses screws.

My RS-180 open up perfectly, just rotate the earpadding 10 degrees and it comes right off, then it's all screws

Man the razer mamba is poorly built

first there's the scrollwheel problem which most people seem to have, within a month or two it starts squeaking
Then the glue under the rubber padding on the side is melted off by your hand another few months later
and now the cover of the dpi indicator has fallen off

amazing build quality for what is supposed to be a premium mouse
