afaik BF2 only had 1 character per account... where as 2142 had up to three...

err no it's not; it makes more sense than anything. stats systems tied to soldier profiles = incentive to want to start afresh / to have multiple 'accounts'. having multiple names or profiles in a game like call of duty, for example, makes less sense- because it serves only as an aesthetic/ego element. you're being an idiot; shut the fuck up.

I'm still rank 1 and have only got a handful of dogtags in the few hours I played since release, yet my stats show more than 40 dogtags, a few of them multiples.
