im gonna play devil's advocate here... there's nothing extremely 'weak' in a storyline-fabula by having several sub-plots or parallel storylines. it's something used in even the best stories by the wisest storytellers. to be fair you only follow a small number of central characters in MW2, and the overall storyline is fairly cohesive if you're following half-attentively. the people with ADHD are those that don't understand the story, e.g. you. I find it very simple to follow... cliché, almost.Miggle wrote:

The fact that you fight what seems like hundreds of enemies in every single mission just makes the whole thing seem extremely crap to me. It's not fun. It's just a chore. The whole game is nothing more than a glorified shooting gallery. Every mission is BORING. It's like Transformers 2 in that way actually. There's so much crap going on I just don't care about any of it. There's never any lulls in the action either. Its just BADGUYS BADGUYS BADGUYS BADGUYS SCRIPTED EVENT BADGUYS BADGUYS BADGUYS MISSION END.
Not only that but I have literally no idea what's going on. I'm at the bit when i'm in Washington DC. What happens right is this. It will start loading the next mission. The video plays, usually slowly changing to the other insignia of the guys i'm about to switch to, the camera slowly pans the globe, then i'm finished loading and the video locks up. Great.
So in every single mission i'm wondering what on earth is going on then realise I don't care.
Another thing that bugs me is the fact that it switches who you play as after each mission. It means the entire 'experience' is extremely disjointed, which just emphasizes the fact that I don't know whats going on. Did IW design this game for people with attention spans of 1 minute or something.
Meh.
i'd say about 3/10 so far. It gets 3 points for running smoothly, the giving me a sentry gun at one point so I didn't have to go to the effort of shoot the hundreds of bad guys myself.
and yes, it's about shooting tons of enemies. welcome to call of duty 1, circa 8 years ago. it's the way the call of duty engine plays. if you're not used to expecting that 'mass scale', trigger-point gameplay, why the hell are you still complaining about it now, 6-7 games later? duh, moot point.

Sure, you can follow it just fine, but if you look back on it, you should notice that they rarely finished any thoughts. The brazilian for example.Uzique wrote:

Spoiler (highlight to read):
After Price tries to nuke DC, why does he continue to be in charge?
Why is Price in charge in the first place?
Why does Shepherd kill Roach and Ghost?
That guy doesn't try nuke DC.
He's not in charge.
And you are very thick if you can't figure this one out.

Will own you all easy, don't even try and respond to my pure awesomeness.
i'm pretty sure though that nuking DC was never the intention, and what actually happened was what was meant to happen.Miggle wrote:

mind you i wouldn't ascribe that level of narrative genius to IW, to be fair.
the storyline makes sense to me, i don't know what the big deal is. sure there are plot-holes, but even the best games have that. half life is widely regarded as the greatest single-player experience like EVAR (except for maybe some titles like deux ex, granted) but even that introduces characters arbitrarily, starts small subplots and side-missions that never resolve themselves or prove worthy, and has a lot of spam and general filler, etc. I wouldnt even rank MW2 anywhere near as high as half life / half life 2, but im just saying... you're playing a video-game, as long as it provides entertainment and has a fairly driven plot, that's enough. i don't expect to be immersed in a hemingway-world war II tale when i play a game, it's just expecting too much.

Well all I know (because of my broken cutscenes) is this.
That's as far as i've gotten to, and that's literally all I know so far. Can someone fill in the blanks for me? Tell me whats actually going on?
- I'm a private just into the army in some dusty country on top of a humvee. After some fighting i'm apparently chosen for a tip top secret mission with an ultra secret branch of military (Why on earth..? Surely there are tens of thousands of people better qualified?).
- I then pretend to be russian and shoot lots of civilians. If I try to shoot the russians, even if I get all of them in an instant, I spontaneously die and my cover is blown. After slaughtering lots of russian civs my cover is blown anyway and i die.
- So then i'm in some icy, snowy russian base and we infiltrate the base and pick up... something.
- Then, because a bullet was from Brazil, we go to brazil (was this before or after the invasion I can't remember). We capture (who I assume is) the guy who made the bullet (because the guy who makes bullets obviously knows the big plan).
- Then russia invades america for some reason. Ok. Well. I go to Burger King and meet some other americans. I can't remember any actual plot points there except we fought off the russians (makes sense since they're invading).
- Back in Brazil you leave Brazil.
- You fight in america some more down some streets and find a man dead in a house. He had some sort of briefcase.
- Then you attack a captured oilrig and rescue the hostages.
- Then (amazingly without a trip back to america first) you go to a castle. You meet Price and leave the castle.
- Then Washington DC is under attack.

You can't hit two shots to a person in 5 seconds out of a 30-bullet clip? That's how low-powered guns are in softcore.Backupwayback wrote:

used the riot shield for an hour or so tonight, on domination. what a lul. it actually has a tactical use. i was helping my team-mates capture points by absorbing bullets/explosions on the point... and i was getting assists, points and rank-up experience for it, too. that's pretty cool. bashing and killing people with the riot shield is some humiliating shit as well, thank god they made challenges for such a purpose

There is no more juggerboob in the game. Guns are pretty powerful hardcore seems pointless.
so the vote is get the game?
it's fun. i was surprised, being one of the greater skeptics. i didnt join any futile 'boycott mw2' or 'fuck IW' bandwagon- i despaired for their shitty design choices (e.g. no peeks) and still do... but im pleasantly surprised that they've still managed to create a fun game. it's not cod1/cod2. it's not mw1. it's a new game unto itself, and im enjoying it for what it's worth.
and yes, re: softcore/hardcore. full auto assault rifles kill in < 5 shots in this game. i haven't even contemplated playing hardcore. in fact, sometimes i rage because i get killed so damn fast by most of the guns, and it takes out that call of duty-esque 'react and return' gameplay that we all know and loved from the originals. i really, really miss peeking. a small part of me will always have the dream that they'll one day implement it. doing the campaign on veteran difficulty- when all the fucking annoying favela brazilians and all the kickass russians can peek and fire from cover - is a bit of a ragefest. gief peekzzz .
