I was just thinking about some of the more stupid *facepalm* moments in my life. A couple stood out and they're kind of similar.
Okay so one of my best friend's dad died in 2003 of a silent heart-attack. It was really unexpected and really tragic. To get him out and about I took him to the movies, we saw "Die Another Day" in which James Bond fakes a heart attack and is attended to by paramedics. Yep, I'm great for getting people's minds off tragic events. I realised what a stupid thing I'd done when he said "that's what they did to Conrad", (his dad.)
That's not the worst of it though. Later on because there was nothing else to do we rented a couple of movies, one of which, my choice, was "The Game" with Michael Douglass. This would turn out to be the worst possible choice.
- Main character's name: Nick.
- My mate's name: Nick.
- Character's brother's name: Conrad.
- Mate's dad's name: Conrad.
In the movie of course, (spoiler warning, who cares,) the main character ends up shooting and apparently killing his brother. Fan-fucking-tastic.
Apparently I haven't learned. Earlier this year after another best friend's girlfriend's mother died of cancer I started making cancer jokes around everyone, completely oblivious to the fact that this was probably the most inappropriate thing to do ever around someone who'd just lost a parent to cancer. I realised my err when she asked innocently, (and without meaning to shame me out or anything because she's cool,) "have you ever known anyone who's had cancer?"
Realisation hit me like a ton of bricks and I just stammered out a response and the unsuccessfully tried to make my head retreat into my chest cavity.
So I'm curious, do any of you have *facepalm* moments to match these? Anything to reduce the sense of dumbassery I feel when I remember these events?
