Tammy Sexton, 47, was even able to make a cup of tea just after the incident.
Police said it was a miracle Mrs Sexton is still alive after her husband shot her in the forehead at close range in her home in Mississippi.
The bullet exited at the back of her head.
'There's no way she should be alive other than a miracle from God,' said Sheriff Mike Byrd.
'The bullet passed straight through her brain. It's one of the most unreal, bizarre things I've ever seen.'
Mrs Sexton was asleep in bed when her estranged husband Donald appeared at her home in Jackson County armed with a pistol.
As a relative in the house ran to call police, Sexton, 57, took aim and shot his wife.
He then went outside and took his own life.
Mrs Sexton was holding a rag to her head by the time police arrived.
Sheriff Byrd said Mrs Sexton offered the officer a cup of tea, and he noticed she had already made herself a cup.
An air-ambulance took Mrs Sexton to hospital where surgeons discovered the bullet had passed through the lobes of the brain without causing major damage.
Dr Patrick Pritchard, a professor of surgery at the University of Alabama, said: 'There is a space in the brain where a missile could pass without doing any major damage.'
Doctors found an entry and exit wound in her skull, but said she is expected to make a full recovery.
Police in Jackson are still stunned that they are not investigating a murder-suicide.
'You just don't hear of something like this. Somebody gets shot in the head and they're dead,' Byrd said.
Mrs Sexton was in the process of divorcing her husband and had taken out a restraining order against him.
Court records show he was put on probation for six months on April 9 for domestic violence.
