BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -Derek Roy scored the decisive shootout goal, and had a goal and an assist in regulation in the Buffalo Sabres' 6-5 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Friday night.
Jason Pominville, who snapped a 17-game goal drought, forced extra time by scoring with 4 seconds left in the third in a game the Sabres squandered two three-goal leads. Ryan Miller sealed the win by getting his glove out to stop Milan Michalek's shootout attempt.
It was an emotional night for the community a day after 50 people were killed when Continental Connection Flight 3407 crashed into house in suburban Buffalo. The Sabres, who turned down the NHL's offer to postpone the game, paid tribute to the victims with a moment of silence before the game.
Joe Thornton had four assists, and Patrick Marleau scored twice for the Western Conference-leading Sharks, 1-0-3 on a five-game trip that ends Sunday in New Jersey.
The shootout went into the fifth round after Pominville and Marleau scored in the fourth round.
Roy gave the Sabres the edge when he drove in on Evgeni Nabakov and flipped a backhander that beat the goalie on the short side.
Dan Boyle had a goal and assist, and Joe Pavelksi and Devin Setoguchi added goals for the Sharks.
Jaroslav Spack and Adam Mair, with his career-high seventh of the season, also scored for Buffalo, while Craig Rivet had three assists in the first game against his former team after the Sharks traded him to the Sabres in July.
Pominville scored by deflecting in Rivet's point shot.
It was a turning point for a Buffalo team that otherwise looked done after squandering a 3-0 lead in the first period and a 4-1 lead in the second.
San Jose found its groove behind Thornton, who had a hand in the team's first four goals. Thornton played a particularly significant role on Setoguchi's power-play goal that tied it at 4 at the 6:19 mark of the third period.
Controlling the puck behind the Sabres net, Thornton burst free after Andrej Sekera lost control of his stick. He fed Boyle in the right circle, who sent a pass through the middle to Setoguchi, who one-timed it in the open side.
Pavelski then put the Sharks up 5-4 with 9:46 left. Sidestepping both Mair and defenseman Chris Butler at the right boards, Pavelski snapped a shot over Miller's left shoulder.
It was night and day for the Sabres' power play. After going 1-of-12 on the power play in a 3-1 loss to Ottawa on Wednesday night, Buffalo converted its first three chances and finished 3-of-6.
Notes: Roy and linemate Drew Stafford shared a double-century milestone in producing the Sabres' third goal. For Roy, it was the 100th goal of his career, while Stafford's assist was his 100th career point. ... Sharks C Marcel Goc was placed on injured reserve because of a lower-body injury. He was hurt in a 5-2 win at Boston on Tuesday. ... Sekera returned after missing 12 games because of an ankle injury.

Man, fuck Montreal. Every time they have a chance to capitalize on a Rangers loss, they fuck it up. Game's not over, but they're probably done. It's 3-1, end of the second.

As well as 2001-2002 (didn't make it past the QF, but an excellent season) and countless other playoff seasons in the 80's, I'd say you're quite incorrect.
'95-'01, I'd agree with. How about we talk about '98-'06 for the Rangers, hmm?
yeah he is sittin out for both the Washington and Pittsburgh game and theres talk of him not playing when they get back for a home game eitherAndoura wrote:
Wow Gainey talked with Kovalev and asked him to say in montreal while the team is going to Washington for the game on Wednesday...
This doesn't smell good! Their talking about a trade and that kovalev played his last game for the canadiens sunday... I really hope it will not happen!
Yup, I think gainey is more intelligent than that nway... Even tho i love Koivu, i think he should trade koivu instead and keep kovalev here!CanadianLoser wrote:
