The game story develops with help of a unique system called Mental Echo - the ability to penetrate another character's memory and change the actions taken by that character in the past. It's survival horror, practically every survival horror game gets an A+ from me (all but bioshock), just like I love every psychological thriller movie.

So I've been playing this for 2 hours, and I still haven't gotten a gun, though I have 3 melee weapons (a lock, a valve, and an axe). The game revolves around these memory change things where you go into the mind of a dead guy and change his actions when he would have died, allowing him to live and open a door you need opened or get a weapon you need. These memories are how the game tells it's story, which, so far has been like this:Spoiler (highlight to read):
This retard captain sails his icebreaker into a thick patch of ice, where the hull tears itself apart and a lot of people freeze to death. For some reason these frozen people come back as insane zombie freaks who try to kill anybody still alive. In these peoples memories you have to try to fix the hull or escape flooding, sometimes it's just about killing these zombie freaks. I'm hoping at the end I get to fix the captain's decision to go into this mess.
The combat system is phenomenal, with melee weapons holding down multiple movement keys allows you to have a "combo" where you will swing several times according to which keys you press. The health system is based on body heat, so in order to heal you have to warm up by standing near a fire, lightbulb, torch, etc. The horror is very SS2ish (sorry) with loud noises before you encounter an enemy to stress the shit out of you. At several points in the game you find drawings which tell a story about a native tribe who get stuck in a forest. It's kind of interesting, but it usually just makes you colder if you stand still to read it.

All the dialogue is in russian, but there are subtitles in english.

oh yeah, and in one of the memories you get to put on a big daddy suit.

The fps are a little slow, but I've maxed out the gfx on an 8800gt and am using 1440 x 900 resolution. Lower settings and it then improves.

I've only had a few battles but already it's clear that from now on THIS is the system fps games will use in hand to hand combat. It's great.

The plot is a little bit thin so far, but it adds to the immersion value. The flashbacks are developing the story, but you are also altering it with your choices when you change the past actions of deceased crew members (it's complicated but works).

So far it's been better than farcry2 and is on par with fallout 3 in terms of enjoyment.

I'm going back to play it.
