I was under the impression they ran on the same engine.

The same engine that has been upgraded significantly for years now, quite frequently.

Same engine =/= same graphics haul.

HL2 came out in '04, L4D came out 2 months ago...you expected them to be the same?

Slightly different shaders and minor engine differences... L4D (and to a lesser extent, TF2) are slightly more demanding and ahead of earlier-generation HL2 titles in terms of shadows, shaders, effects and graphical gizmo's basically- as well as lots of particle effects and engine tweaks. Pretty minor.

I wouldn't call the additions "minor", but they are running different versions of the same engine.

I mean the changes are pretty minor, they haven't overhauled the engine as such and completely revamped the technology. You don't notice a great deal of difference graphically or engine-wise between HL2, CSS, TF2 or Left 4 Dead... apart from artistic directions of course, i.e. TF2's cel-shading style. Plus, 1.2Ghz to 3Ghz is pretty 'minor' in terms of hardware-demand, HL2's engine barely takes advantage of processors and multiple-cores anyway... I'd prioritise RAM and graphics card above processor.

Actually I know very little about the Source/HL2 engine, I'm just speaking from my own hardware/playing experience of all the Steam titles. I'm sure someone with a greater knowledge of the graphical updates and particle-effect wizardry will come along and kindly educate me on how Steam have uberly boosted the xy particle vector quasi-pseudo-semi-flux capacitator by 240% in the 2008 Q2 fiscal period... but all I'm trying to say is that it's not as if have Steam have replaced the basic HL2 engine with Crysis-like shit for Left 4 Dead. It's essentially the same thing, just as others have said, dragged into 2008 rather than HL2-era.

TF2 doesn't use cel shading . Sorry it just bugs me when people say it uses cel shading.

As for source. Compare HL2's graphics to Left 4 Dead or TF2's. The engine has improved vastly (IMO) over the years.

Especially Left 4 Dead. It looks really really nice in places. HL2 in comparison looks bare and bland.

"Cel shading style". Ok so the actual rendering method is called phong shading, now can you try a little less harder to fulfill the stereotype of the atypical nobend that I described in my second post? Thanks.

And you get bugged when people use the wrong term, even though you still know what they're talking about? Go outside.

God I was just saying. All I did was say its not cel shading in an obviously not serious way (alienface), apologise for nitpicking then go back on topic and give my opinion on how Source has changed over the years.

Did I really deserve that reply? I don't think so.

It is the same engine, but with significant tweaks

Atypical nobend as in the one that comes along to any post with a technical question and decides to one-up everyone by being ultra-pedantic and nitpicky about the fine-details... you knew what I was referring to in the difference between 'graphical styles' of CSS/HL2/TF2, so yes, the remark immediately following stating "I hate it when people get blah blah..." was 'that one' as you put it .

Yes you did deserve it, bye.
