That is a terrible analogy and you know it.
How so?
First of all, because the personal trait in question is not intelligence but ignorance, and the latter is certainly not determined by your genetic disposition.

Secondly, because this is a slow, gradual problem. If you were notified of the volcano a month beforehand, everyone but a cripple could get away in time under their own power, and even a cripple could find and pay someone to carry them in that time. If they're still sticking around after a month...let them burn.
Firstly, I disagree - there's plenty of information available that says "bad credit is bad, mkay" - you would have to live in a cave to be ignorant of that basic fact - but some people still do not get it - that can only be down to intelligence.

Secondly, the credit crunch also didn't happen over night - the signs have been there and people have been warning everyone of the consequences of bad debt for a long time - long enough for everyone involved to have done something about it.

If you tell someone 2 + 2 = 4 and they still don't get it, it is only a matter of intelligence because they are literally mentally retarded. If the average person doesn't know this, it's out of ignorance not stupidity.

Secondly, you proved my point. Bad analogy.

Firstly, that's the point - as I said, you'd have to live in a cave to not know that 2+2=4 (or that bad debt is bad), but still people don't get that 2+2=4 (bad debt is bad) - how often does one have to scream something at someone until one accepts that that someone lacks the intelligence to understand?

Secondly, then I don't get what your point is. What was it?

My point was your instant-death scenario was a very poor analogy to the current situation, partially because this crisis did not happen overnight.

Maybe they weren't paying attention the first time, but the second? third? fourth? fifth? etc? It's not like it hasn't been plastered all over the news (well, in this country at least) for quite some time.

But the point of my volcano analogy is that it's not an instant death scenario, unless you're unlucky enough to live right on top of it when it blows, and even then you'd probably notice the plumes of noxious gases well in advance of any eruption...

People don't pay attention in this country at all. I don't understand why it's so hard to believe that people are just plain flat ignorant to what most of us consider basic information.

I don't class 'not paying attention to a ringing alarm' as 'ignorance', I class it as 'pure stupidity' (i.e. a lack of intelligence).

Oh well by all means lets fuck me over so as to keep people from taking responsibility for themselves and why? Because we are all in this together and everything has gotta be "fair". Individuality is taboo...typical liberal thinking.

Actually that is a pretty bad anology, but I will try and work with it.

It is better to leave them yes, than to go down in flames with them to the point where we ALL burn to death.

seriously, do you have time to get buses when there's lava pouring down on you?

Part of the reason everyone died at pompeii was their attempt to get buses.

See? This is how those bastards tag team us.

Bush, pretending to be a fiscal conservative lead us into a socialist state of our financial affairs. He gave the presidency massive new powers after 9-11. Those do not expire when he leaves office.

And, finally, he has made such a disaster of the republican party that Obama will be catapulted into office in a Reaganesqe landslide and moreso;
he will have a mandate

The backlash against the republicans will also cost them seats in the house and senate and give Obama as many as 3-4 supreme court judges.

I go on record here; Obama the "uber-liberal" will use the " bush recession " to usher in a new and as yet unimagined police state and world events will make him the war time president of war time presidents.
Oh young Jedi, how you see so clearly.

I think you are absolutely right. The part that scares me the most, is the Supreme court justice selection.

I don't think it is patronizing to recognise when someone needs help and to then offer to provide them with that help.

If they refuse to accept the help that's offered, but you still give it anyway, that's a different matter (though in some circumstances it would still be the right thing to do).
