I've heard the same thing before, but in the context of England only.

if the waiter does their job and i get my food hot, then they get 20% only because it's easier for me to calculate.  if wait staff screws up my order or food is crappy, they get the standard US fare of 15%.
I don't base my tip on the food quality, just the service.  However, if the waiter is unable to correct a food problem, then the tip might be lowered.

For me, I will give 15% if the waiter does an average job:  takes the order correctly, keeps the drinks reasonably filled, bill on time, etc.  If the waiter fails to do this, the tip might get lowered down to about 10% (no lower, because I know they make well below minimum wage).

However, if the waiter is very attentive to my table, bringing refills BEFORE I'm empty, anticipating my need of things such as napkins or condiments, etc., then their tip might be 20 or 25%.

Some other stuff ...

-- I don't tip but about 5-10% for buffets.
-- I take into consideration if the waiter's boss has given them too many tables
-- I will give more of a tip (5-10% more) if I'm taking their table a little longer than normal (for example, I want to sit for a while to talk with a friend).

Other places I tip  ...
-- Skycaps ... they'll lose your bags
-- Valets when you give them your keys ... they'll dent your car
-- Cabbies ... hard life
-- Pizza delivery ... often someone trying to get ahead

Places I never tip ...
-- Garbage men ... prices are waaaaaaaay too much in my area
-- Postal workers ... my carriers are absolutely horrid
-- Newscarriers ... they piss me off begging for Christmas tips

I think it's pretty disgraceful that they are allowed to pay them below minimum wage. Doesn't happen over here (not any more at least).

In the UK the minimum you can earn an hour is £5.73, or about $10. All waiting staff earn this + tips.

I agree with Joe.

If you weren't supposed to tip, the wait staff would get paid more than $3/h and the food prices would all go up 20% or so.
Either ways the cost for the client is the same. So why doesn't the waiter get paid more to begin with? And why is it not the same in the insurance business for example? Or with your doctor?

btw who ever said we don't tip in Europe? the only difference is it's not something fixed like the yankee 10%

I sometimes tip Pizza guys, but only them, never anything else. And only for the fact that I never have the exact amount of money so I just tell them keep the change.

And yeah, whoever said sometimes it's added to the bill here, they're right. Sometimes for large groups of people they add a (usually 10%) "service charge" - To which my dad always complains about if he's paying, lol.

Depends if you are a regular aswell.  It really is a case of prefered service if your fairly generous.  A few dollars in exchange for a table pronto at a nice restaurant (so I can score quicker ) seems like a good investment to me.

Huh? If I'm not mistaken, doctors are supposed to make a lot of money. You don't go through 4 years of college and 6 years of med school or however long it takes to make less than minimum wage.

what does that have to do with tipping?

is that why people tip? because waiters or whoever don't get paid enough? i don't think so

if that were the case then many more poorly-paid professions would get a tip, but they don't!

I tip 20% unless he/she really screws up.  That's for waiters/waitresses.  The girl that cuts my hair always does a good job, so she always gets 20%.

My hairdresser gets a ~30% tip, waiters I usually give 10%. And who thought Europeans don't tip? Silly people.

Yeah, it is why we tip actually. They get paid less than minimum wage. You know, what the government deems the minimum amount of money per hour one needs to be paid to scrape by?

Tipping isn't a custom here, but its not unheard of.  Usually I tip when I get good service, but last night I gave an extra fiver to my taxi driver (fare was 10) because he was a retired ANZAC soldier.

I don't know about you guys over there, but around here, I've done two or three jobs that were paid under minimum wage with no insurance or anything. Yet nobody ever felt the need to tip me because my job was not one of those where people usually tip.

Mind you, tipping in Greece is quite the mandatory thing in restaurants, cafeterias, pizza boys etc.

£5 haircut here I think, or it might be £4.50 and a 50p tip. I don't asks I just give a £5 note.

Tipping, the way it is practiced in America, is bullshit. It is just a way of allowing restaurants to pay staff shitty wages.

I don't mind leaving a tip when I get good service somewhere (and to be fair the service in America is usually outstanding) but tipping out of some sort of obligation is, as Mr. Pink says, "for the birds".

Wow. If you consider American service at restaurants to be "usually outstanding", the bar set in Ireland must be hellaciously low.

American service IS amazing.

Everywhere I was in the US last week, they'd constantly give you refills when you were halfway on your drink, they were all happy and nice, and they never fucked up the orders or anything like that. This is probably to get more tips, but this is exactly why I love the tip system - it gets you better service.

Norwegian service is terrible. But then, we don't have free refills, so you never get the same kind of service.

Mines usually about £15 I just make it up to £20. I used to be a barber shop guy too, cost about £5 to have the mess shaved off, then I thought fuck it and went over the road to the flashy hair salon and had the mess made to look nice instead, you also get it washed, conditioned and a massage to go with it, worth every penny, you try find a decent massage from one of the most utterly stunning girls you'll ever see in your life for less than £20, and I get my hair done too

EDIT: I can't spell.
