I currently have the AMD 3800+ Manchester CPU... but I'm not impressed with it. At all.

I didn't buy it for gaming purposes but my Intel ran BF2 on negative FPS. I've had the CPU for around 3 - 4 months and am not liking it. I was thinking of doing either one of two things:

1. Overclock to 2.4 and buy a Zalman cooler.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6835118223

2. Change the CPU to this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819103526

Then overclock to 2.8 (ish) with again, the Zalman cooler.

Which is the better choice? I don't do a lot of things on my computer that would normally require a dual core CPU.  I spent $186 on it, and could easily sell it now with socket 939 X2's being a thing of the past now because they are hard to find now.

I was actually looking at an X2 for Christmas myself. http://www.stockthat.com/product_info.p … s_id=31642

Yeah, I should have gotten the 4200+ in the first place, but didn't because I'm a fucking idiot.

2.2 ghz instead of 2.0 is a big deal, at least to me it is.

FX-55.  Higher clock speed, and more L2Cache.

That's my vote anyways.

Why pay that much $$  for 1 core when you can get this for only a few $$ more:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819103588

Pop a decent HSF on it like your zalman or better save some $$ and get this for $17:

I've read you can get free shipping if you pay using paypal.

Overclock, mine runs quite happily at 2.4 on air alone with a Zalman cooler.  And i have had it higher though my RAM doesnt quite cut the mustard at such high speeds.

That's only at 1.8 ghz. I've looked at that one before. The only thing it has better over my 3800+ is the L2 cache which is 2X 1MB.

Heres my review. Since games will soon be coming out for Dual-Core processors. I would suggest DC.
First make sure you know what socket you are, if your socket 939 i would recommend the
X2 4800 Windsor ($280)
But if you have an abundence of money i would say go with the best, which would be the
FX-62 which is a dual core 2.8ghz (kick ass but $680)(socket AM2)

If your destine to go with single core i'de recommend the 2.8ghz FX-57 (socket 939)

4800: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819103754

If you have socket AM2 I would HIGHLY recommend the X2 5200 which has a pretty big cache and its dual-core 2.6ghz

5200: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819103759

Hope this helped. DC ftw in my oppinion. much better multitasking and games will be sweet on it soon

Yeah, I was thinking that too. What I might do is wait till after the holidays and add whatever $$ I get from family to what I have saved now and get something nice. I hate tough decisions...

What's wrong with the 3800?  I have one with a 7600GS and a gig of ram and I run everything high/medium smooth as glass.  You may have problems elsewhere...

I have the exact same CPU overclocked to 2.3, and it works great for me.  Install the dual-core optimizer from this link:
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_13118,00.html

It helped out a lot.

Ya my buddys got a 7900GT, 2GB RAM, AMD 64 3800+ & he runs maxed out w/ 4x aa Smooth.
3800+ is a great CPU, definately powerful enough to handle anything Bf2 can throw at it.

I find that my X800 is bottlenecking my CPU. I run bf2 around 30fps on a 32 person Karkand server... On medium with AA turned off. 2 gigs of RAM too... Odd.

A 7900GT would definitely help my fps. But before I tackle my video card issues... my CPU problem has to be solved. I posted the question on Hardforums and got the same answers as here. No one seems to know. One thing that was said there that no one mentioned here was AMD's Cool-N-Quiet feature...which I do not have enabled. They said that CNQ has been an issue for some users with SP2 on XP. No one knows why either.

Here's the link to the question on hardforums.

Its always a good thing when the video cards the bottlneck & not the CPU.
Its odd a x800, 2GB RAM, 3500+ is running & 30FPS.
My current x800GTO, 1GB RAM, 2800+ runs medium-high at 50+FPS on a 32 man kark server....but much lower on 64 man.

So your system is better, yet runs worse....hmmm... im stumped.

I know I lag in a big firefight, like on mashtuur city around Mosque 30FPS..but away from combat im at 80FPS. Karkand runs anywhere from 40FPS-100FPS.

Yeah I know, over a grand invested and I still can't play bf2.

I have the dual core optimizer installed and I didn't see a noticeable difference. I really don't feel like reformatting again either. I'm virus free according to Spybot and windows defender...as well as AVG. So yeah, if you're stumped like I am, join my club.

I'd recommend the same, but then he'd need a new mobo aswell. But from the looks of it, he just wants to get the job done for his current needs.

Just overclock the darned thing,   these processors overclock very well.
I have a 3700+ running @ 2.9 ghz  on air, and stock voltage.
And a friend of mine also has a 3800+ and that one runs @ 2.8 ghz on air, and stock voltage.
Just boost you FPS a bit.

How come that you have to overclock your AMD Athlon 3800+ To 2.4 ghz? Whilst mine, that just came in this morning is standard at 2.4 ghz? Or am I just readin this wrong..?

IMO you have no choice but to go to dual core route, simply because single cores are being phased out.  But, me personaly I love my 3800+(AM2, @ 2.51GHz) single core.

Yeah, I'm not looking to go Core 2 Duo yet. Maybe when the prices come down drastically. AMD is perfect for what I want to use it for. I just need to round the edges in my system without spending a lot of money that I don't need to.

I already did 2 complete system changes. I'm not really looking to fuck with everything again. I know when I change my motherboard it's going to be PCI-E and I'll get a 7800GT or 7900GT to match it. That's really all I want to do right now. Changing my CPU is stupid if I can just fix the one I have now.

Keep the help coming guys.

Thanks!
