I took the forums down for a little bit today to clean up the search index, delete old users, and prune old posts. End result:

In other inportant news!

I'm now on xmas break! This means that BF2S is going to get some well over-due loving. The first things you'll notice is the your profile has faintly shifted...

- No more Global Rank
- No more Sigs

Global Rank
Long overdue now, my priority over break will be to implement a REAL ranking system that will catch more than just "my score is better than your score." More details on this as it gets made...

Sigs
These were killing my machine. I have reworked them 4 times now, and each time the load has lessened, but still put my machine way, WAY above what it out to have been. It was too the point, recently, that people were not able to access the site because of the load.

Considering that I am going to implement the Ranking system (sort of as a trade-off) and that other sites out there are doing a far better job than I at providing sigs, BF2S is going to step aside in this arena.

More to come as I celebrate the holidays and get my coding on. Happy holidays!

edit Oh yeah, since sigs are leaving, I may turn avatars and take out the image tag in the sigs. Opinions?[/i]

Then again I've been hearing a lot of people getting tired of seeing those softcore porn sigs from Hypernia, so I'm about 50-50 on that.

Well you didn't really take away sigs. You just took away the BF2s-generated images. We can still identify ourselves using sigs made elsewhere... So until you actually turn off the signatures option altogether, I don't see a need to add avatars. Like you said somewhere else, it should be either one or the other.

Some of them are fine...the ones where the pic is inlaid into a small stats signature ain't TOO bad. But still...if I want softcore porn, I'll go watch Cinemax after midnight. People who browse from work or school may not want softcore popping up on their screen when they aren't expecting it...and who in their right mind would expect it at a BF2 forum?

The biggest problem comes when people stack multiple 640x480 pics of random half-naked chicks one on top of the other, taking up an entire screen for a one-line post. Some of the sigs, softcore porn or not, are borderline ridiculous because they eat up 800+ pixels of space. Some people are just using enormous pics as their sigs...it's just silly.

Shit like this? W T F? Only by going full-screen in Firefox can I get that abortion of a signature to fit on an LCD running at 1280x1024.

i think the most annoying thing is the oversized sigs. as long as people keep it small and within the content limits of the site, it's not so bad.

the 'softcore porn' sigs from tehsig.com are prevalent because it's a large part of the culture from those forums. again, as long as they're small and show no 'unacceptable nudity' [nipples, pubic hair, sexual organs] then there should be no objection. it's no worse than what's on cable tv, after all.

of course i'm biased...

I'd be against avatars myself. Having been the lead tech for several forums I can say that avatars lead to trouble. Sig images lead to trouble too, but most sigs here seem to be running off half-decent servers (like the ones we're all using from tehsig.com). Storing avatars locally will eat your space, and letting people use remote image avatars can lead to slow page loads (due to slow servers where they put them).

I'd vote for keeping img tags in sigs and just making some rules about what kinda images can be used in the background to reduce the "softcore porn" effect. This Global Rank intrigues me so I'll just wait and see what happens there. Anyway, your forum so just let us know what you decide! Meanwhile I'll keep working on my other sig template which will finally feature Chibi Moon
