I wrote a post earlier and in hindsight realized that I was going beyond debating on the facts and getting into dumbass, passive-aggressive taunting and insulting meant only to annoy some while entertaining others.

This "US VERSUS THEM" mindset is exactly what is wrong with the USA right now, and I'm just exacerbating the probem in my own small way.

From today I'm going to commit myself to paying close attention to that fine line between expressing my opinion and insulting or showing disdain for anyone who doesn't agree.

From now on, I am instituting a personal zero-tolerance policy. I welcome anyone to PM me to let me know that I crossed the line and was personally disrespectful with them, and I will send a full apology and 7 days worth of karma. This includes any case where I was insulted/disrespected and then just shoveled the shit back - that's no excuse.

I too have taken that stand, even partially abandoning the flame-worthy reply when provoked. I'll still offer passionate opinions now and then and DEFEND myself and my opinion, but the name calling and provocative insulting has ended..and I didn't even need atg or one of those other yahoos to "break me in" or whatever it is they claimed to have done with ikarti or the other guys I've seen here mentioned as being adjusted. lol

True. But my job is to stop discussing at that point. In my ideal world, every debate operates by the Socratic method - all participants bringing their respective intelligence and logic to the discussion with the common goal of finding the best answer possible. I'm more than willing to concede an argument if it means my understanding of the world improves. If the other party offers nothing, or has no interest in an honest debate, it's become a waste of time. Time to call it quits.

Of course. But the beauty of the internet is you can be passionate and get really pissed off and fly off the handle, but you can still calm down and either post no response or wait 20 min and write something respectfully. That's my goal.
