I doubt 3K will buy you the PC you want. Considering Fast RAM is like 400 - 800$ as 2gig and the Best AMD Processor is like 1,500$.  But yeah its been some time since i have check so prices might have changed.

Buy up. There's all manner of websites and/or stores relatively local to you who'll do you a good price, no doubt. If you want DX10, just leave the graphics card until then. You can be relatively sure the first DX10 cards will be PCI-E and support SLI so don't sweat it too much. Just make sure you compare across several sources to make sure you get a reasonably good/cheap one per component.

you sure you went the amd cpu when the intel is better and cheaper right now? And i dont think physX is a good idea, not many developers are actually making patches to support it

One thing I can say is you don't need 4 Gb of RAM.  That's a little too much.  2 Gb should do fine, you can always upgrade in the future.

Windows XP, I believe, can't even recognize or utilize more than 2gb anyways....

true? false? anyone?  Or did it have something to do with software and that no software program could even utilize 2gb of ram?

Look, there is always something coming out just around the corner and the general trend is that you "wait until it comes out so either you can get it, or get the older stuff cheaper."

There is always something coming just around the corner. If you kept waiting it out you'd never get anywhere.

My tip, make sure it can do what you want it for at the moment, and then some. In the future you can always invest in new parts for it anyway.

I am thinking for an AM2 board you should go with an Asus, unless you plan to overclock.  If you're an overclocker, DFI just released a sweet board.  As for the CPU you can get the FX-62, or just go with the X2 5000+, you're going to want at least DDR2 PC800 memory or faster.  I'd get Crucial XMS for the Asus board, or Patriot, or Geil for the DFI board.  DFI for some reason typically doesn't get along well with Crucial, and OCZ seems to be having a lot of trouble with their DDR2 stuff right now.  ATI just released an X1950XT I believe I just read, or you could get a cheap card to get you up and running (X850XT) and upgrade to DX10 later.  I'm not sure on the PhysX card as there don't seem to be many game companies jumping on board just yet.  As far as the sound goes, you can't go wrong with the Creative Labs X-FI series.  Hope that helps, and good luck with your build!  As far as where to buy, I haven't found anybody that can beat Newegg yet!

okay...i went ahead and built you what i would do on such a budget. feel free to tweak whatever.

Motherboard: ASUS SLi Deluxe AM2 nForce: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813131011

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 2.8GHz AM2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819103861 with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6835118004

Memory: Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820145589 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820145034 (the first one is for the pimp factor, i have it and its way worth the extra 40$ or whatever it is..even 100$$.

Hardrives - Performance: Western Digital Raptor 36GB 16MB: 2x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6822136054

Hardrives - Storage: Western Digital Caviar 250GB 16MB SATA:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6822136010

Video Card ATi Sapphire X1900XT 512MB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814102025

PhysX Card: ASUS 128mb PhysX Processing Unit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814121015

Sound Card: Creative SoundBlaster XF-i:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6829102188

Case: Thermatake Armor Series: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6811133154

EDIT: total comes to $2944.04USD ($3,292.52CAD) with shipping to the West Coast and ASUS optical drives (DVD burner and DC burner(2 drives)) not sure if newegg ships to canada, and it says nothin about it in their FAQ...who knows..

EDIT2: i did some research on the PhysX processor, and i think it is worth getting...many upcoming games are supporting it, and new drivers seem to have completely reversed the loss in FPS during game play (notably in GR:AW). i say go for it...and also, the card listed above actually has 256mb of RAM onboard, it is a newegg error that shows it as 128mb..

EDIT3: left out the stuff like monitors, keyboard, etc... i would go down to costco (i think they have costco in canada...not sure tho...) and check out their monitors...last time i was there they had the Dell 24" lcd  (dell makes kickass monitors) for $680USD, and noone can match costco's return/refund policy (1 year for anything for any reason!). i would also suggest a good keyboard (saitek or logitech), joystick (saitek) and a good mouse (logitech).

Feel free to wait for Vista for starters and you might think about getting a mobo that supports raid. Mirroring would be the best option seeing as if your HD goes(and it happens alot more than you think, i work in the IT field, i am not guru but thats my advice 4 ya), there is no looking back for the data on it and its not like everyone thinks of doing back ups everday, weekly , monthly or even yearly.

If you get over 2 gig of ram, shut off the pagefile, it will speed up your system because even if you have a huge amount of ram and the pagefile is turned on , windows uses it.

I would be interested to see the new Macs with intel procs, i have heard great things about those systems especially for gaming.

Get a huge flat screen too, they are awesome to play with.........

Personally, I'd buy a modest GPU or even just use your old one to get by until DX10 cards are out (possibly Jan/07).
