I'm contemplating getting another hard drive, for various reasons, but I was wondering if you can move windows to another hard drive without doing a full disk reflect?

I've used about 70 gb of my 111 gb HD, and with only about 5% of a movie done and already 1 gb of uncompressed FRAPS footage, I can see alot more of that space being eaten up fast. I'm thinking about getting a nice 36 gb HD, this, and putting windows and all my games on it. I believe that this should make windows boot faster, games load quicker, and mainly I would be recording FRAPS on to my current drive to get better FPS in game. Am I correct that I would get at least some performance gains in the above areas?

So that is my problem, I want to move windows but the new drive wouldn't be big enough for a full disk reflect, are there any options?

I dont think you can "Move" windows like that but you can try formatting the HHD installing windows on it then Backing up you 111GB HHD and Formatting that but not re-installing windows on it.  Im not to sure wait and see what some others post.

So you're saying I should put windows on the new drive, then move the files I want to? What about getting windows off the old drive?

Just reinstall Windows from scratch. It's easier and it'll make your PC run faster.

What about the vast amount of files that would be lost? That's pretty much why it would run faster, lack of all the programs. I keep my disk pretty clean, only with the stuff I use.

Your best bet would be to Format and install windows to the new drive then Copy all of your most important data across then burn the rest of what you need to DVD once that is doen Format the 111GB drive and dont install windows o to it now Your pc will boot from the second HHD leaveing you with an Empty 111GB drive.

maybe ghost it to another drive ... doubtful you will see such a great benefit ... if you really want something that will give you perfornce, stripe a set of drives

ghosting is a posibility, OR you could backup all your files to CD/DVD's and then reinstall windows fresh.

Well I'm thinking the 10,000 RPM will help performance a bit, and I know writing FRAPS to a different drive will help for sure, but I guess I don't know. Would this drive help windows load faster or not? If not I guess I could just install my games onto the new drive and not mess with it anymore.

I suppose atm backing up everything to DVDs would be best, but I'm not even sure how to do that. Windows backup program doesn't let you burn straight to DVDs or CDs, only to floppys or other HDs.

You should only have Windows + Programs on your C: anyway. Just backup any important data and format. It's not hard, I do it twice a year and don't loose anything.

Yes, along with drivers, I have windows and programs on my C drive. 68.4 gb worth of programs, files, and video that I need for something or other. That's an awful lot of stuff to back up, unless I can hunt down another HD.

Edit: I have 35 gb in my program files folder alone.

Get a free Burning program or buy Nero Burning ROM, Then i recomend reading the XP guide at Tweakguides.com and it will show you how to install windows step by step, Also make sure you download all the latest drivers for you hadware BEFORE you format the Drives.

Edit: You can get Dual layer 8.5GB DVD's if your Drive supports it. And dont backup the Programs as they need to be reinstalled to work with the registry.

Use this program. Please listen to me on this one. I've used many different cloning softwares and this one works the best. Hands down. It even comes as a free trial which works for a week. DO NOT REFORMAT if you don't need to due to viruses or something like that.

Yes, my drive supports dual layer thank god, but we're just talking alot of media that I would have to go get, hence some of the apprehension.

To Downy, I actually have that, but my new drive isn't big enough to just reflect the old onto new.

Thanks guys, looks like my best option is to burn everything I want onto disks, format old, install windows on new, then put all the programs back on their respective drives. Sounds like a day and a half of hard drive goodness.

So? You don't need to back that up. Just reinstall the games and programs after formatting.

But save any patches/updates for games, otherwise you'll be waiting along time to play online.

Have used this myself and it is excellent for it. makes it easy not having to re-install everything.

But to be honest format and reinstall, it means a fresh setup, and a nice clean os.

My point was downloading and installing all that stuff would take a looooong time, I don't even remember where I got alot of it, and just finding that stuff would be hard. It's not just BF2/Steam in that folder.

Well I have `15 down but that doesn't very much matter if you can't find a good place (Server) to download some of those valuable files. As for me I have a ghost image. Put one disc in to boot, select which drive to put the image and voila an exact replica.
