I'm in a similar boat, but it'll be 6 months to a year before I upgrade my gaming rig, so it's useless for me to concern myself with CPU roadmaps for the time being. AMD may be back on top before I upgrade.
I've got too many PCs at home, so I do trickle-down upgrades. My wife's machine is a Athlon XP 2200, which will be upgraded to some 939 mobo with my present CPU, I'll get a new CPU on the cheap, and I'll use my wife's PC components to replace my oldest machine It's an old Optiplex GX1 (pent II 450) Redhat linux box I use as an personal HTTP/mail server. It works fine, but it's only tolerable because I never run anything in graphical mode(slow!). I've got a socketA sempron box for my other server, and although it'll be around for a while, it'll be a cheap upgrade in a year or two when 939 stuff is next to worthless. I bought that Sempron when Socket A was all but dead and I paid less than 200 bucks for a mobo, 512mb ram, and a Sempron 2200. Not super fast, but good enough for a server and far better than the CeleronA based system it replaced. The other few machines...hell....I dunno. I'll just upgrade as deals present themselves.
