Here is my attempt at a review of Road to Jalalabad. Please be kind.

When I refer to a road I mean a paved surface, if I say trail, it is just a dirt track. This is also screenshots of an empty 32 player server.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

USMC UNCAP:
US uncappable: 4 Jeeps
                       2 tanks.

Several meters (mts) from the entrance is a fork in the road, the main road(to Jalalabad) to the Sth East and 2nd second “main trail” which goes Eastward to the city entrance.

*64 Player map has 1 extra base along this main trail closest to the waters edge.
https://img207.imageshack.us/img207/9137/pic1wa7.th.jpg
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We’ll take the Main road(to Jalalabad) to the Sth East.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st Flag :  OUTPOST
MEC cappable: 2 Vehicles

https://img207.imageshack.us/img207/824/pic2pp0.th.jpg
A very large open area on the Main Rd.
Not a lot of room available for hiding to cap the flag, you’ll be pretty much “Balls out” and tanks and vehicle will be sitting ducks.

No covered sniper positions
https://img207.imageshack.us/img207/8205/pic3ms1.th.jpg

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Continue on down the Main road 117mts

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2nd Flag: THE FOUNTAIN
MEC cappable: 2 Vehicles
https://img50.imageshack.us/img50/3907/pic4xc0.th.jpghttps://img50.imageshack.us/img50/8914/pic5mi7.th.jpg
The fountain from Sharqi and Karkand is an un actual flag now.
Another open area, especially to cap flag, all roofs are accessible, with some nice little corners and tiny alleyways for small firefights.
Snipers could garnish some kills from roofs, but are not totally hidden from view.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Exiting that base we come to another fork in the road

https://img50.imageshack.us/img50/2513/pic6zx3.th.jpg
Going North will lead you to the “Main Trail” from the city Entrance to the US uncap, then the Main road going East, which have no more flags on it itself, but rather, access to others.
https://img50.imageshack.us/img50/4013/pic7hy8.th.jpg

So along the little trail North  we meet up with US uncap “Main trail” and on the “Main Trail heading into the city on our right we have our next flag. It caqn be seen in the top corner of the pic.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3rd FLAG: JUNKYARD
MEC Cappable: 2 vehicles
https://img291.imageshack.us/img291/1051/pic8pb1.th.jpg

A more concealed flag with accessible roofs, a lot of concealed areas for AT attacks, if a tank is to take the flag.
https://img291.imageshack.us/img291/9749/pic9lp3.th.jpg
There is backdoor access through hallways in buildings that back on to Main road and at the back to the main city walls, with stairs access.
https://img291.imageshack.us/img291/6606/pic12jl3.th.jpghttps://img291.imageshack.us/img291/3874/pic13ag2.th.jpg

A very easily defendable flag, with nice sniping positions.
https://img291.imageshack.us/img291/4342/pic10qi5.th.jpghttps://img291.imageshack.us/img291/9386/pic11di6.th.jpg

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back on the US uncap “Main trail” heading East through the city entrance, in to the city center
https://img291.imageshack.us/img291/1739/pic14hv3.th.jpg
Along this trail it shoots of into tiny alleyways but we’ll continue strait to our next flag, and yet another Hotel.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4th FLAG: HOTEL
MEC capable: 1 Vehicle
https://img50.imageshack.us/img50/8308/pic15ahn1.th.jpghttps://img291.imageshack.us/img291/7456/pic15ez4.th.jpg
A large Building behind the flag that is accessible by a ladder that takes 25 seconds to traverse, think this is very much the same type of flag like the hotel on Sharqi. With access to inside buildings up stairs opposite flag position
https://img207.imageshack.us/img207/5058/pic16hf8.th.jpg
Flag has good cover to cap the flag and there are plenty of Sniping positions to wreak havoc. Access via “Main Road” out the back
https://img207.imageshack.us/img207/3017/pic17ib0.th.jpg

With a Karkand and Sharqi style archway for narrow fighting space. Mounted Tow out the front.
Could be a main intense fighting flag.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Standing in front of hotel we’ll head North to our next flag, through a nice archway
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5th FLAG: MARKET

A small, tight, fighting area with nice sniping positions.Sadly no lack of thought, as this is another fountain Flag… A fairly routine flag, with some intense fighting possible, in my imagination I can envisage grenade spamming from up higher positions
https://img207.imageshack.us/img207/2015/pic19td9.th.jpghttps://img207.imageshack.us/img207/9946/pic21zb9.th.jpg
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This brings us to our last flag, and the only way to get right up to outside of the flag is up some stairs and through tiny alleyways, and small spaces, the main road will bring you near it, but not in front of it.

https://img207.imageshack.us/img207/5348/pic22gj0.th.jpghttps://img207.imageshack.us/img207/8812/pic23dq6.th.jpg

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6th FLAG:  MOSQUE – MEC MAIN BASE
MEC Cappable: 2 Tanks
                2 vehicles

An exact replica of the Mosque on. Mashtuur. It is however sort of above the rest of the map(high ground). With access mainly via stairs.Very similar how the hotel flag on Sharqi is down hill, so to speak, but up instead of down.

https://img207.imageshack.us/img207/6158/pic24ue2.th.jpg

It is also interesting to note that the only way the MEC tanks can access the rest of the city is down the main road. Leaving them stranded by smartly laid AT mines.

https://img207.imageshack.us/img207/9273/pic26ea2.th.jpg

If you can pin the MEC to this base it will be a snipers paradise.
https://img207.imageshack.us/img207/2559/pic25en0.th.jpg
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONCLUSION

In the end this is just a map that combines elements from other city maps, Karkand, Sharqi, Mashtuur, Warlord and Ghost Town.

My personal view however is it will not be a replacement to Karkand, and will still be heavily chosen ahead of this.
The flags on the outside of the city, The fountain, and Outpost, are incredibly wasteful, too far away from the city to care about with no chance for the close combat that most people are after. Plus with the possible addition of Infantry only, it will be a decent run to get to them.

Snipers should have a field day on this map, as most if not all rooftops are accessible by ladders etc.

nice 1. disagree about this not being better than Karkand.

and snipers: just cos its a rooftop doesnt make you invincible. one can actually spot snipers BETTER when they are high up, hanging off the enge of the roof. And lets not forget, its almost as easy to kill one climbing up that loooong hotel ladder as it is to kill a swimmer.

To balance these maps more they should give MEC a tank or two and none to US, to make up for them not having an uncap.

I think it will come down to whether you like Karkand or not, those that hate it with a passion could be the ones to embrace this map, but we wont know till it comes out.

Also im not a champion sniper by any means but personally I think sniping on city maps is fucking stupid.

However most of this map can be played up high on the rooftops, all prime positions for snipers, most of which in this game that snipers wont give a shit about whether they are invisible or not.

Thanks for the kind words so far fellas.

i played it for a day or so. nice map, very nice. the rush at the start is alot of run. gettin past mounted, and ground mg's and rockets if u are us. and even more fun if u are mec...the sniper spots are everywhere. you could play this map for a month and still probably find a new snipe sweet spot imo

but ya wont kill kill karkand

its some odd form of internet crack. that should be regulated imo

My 2 cents:

Jalalabad sucked. Then it was cool. Then it started to suck again. The map looks like a dirty diaper that's been kicked around like a soccer ball. Shit is splattered everywhere. The first MEC flag reminds me of a cluttered garage. It's either hard as hell to tank whore or it's easy as cake. Much more than Kark. On the plus side, I seemed to get a lot more mine/jihad kills on this map. The colors are cool and the marsh area is fun to swim around in. The tight streets make hauling ass in a buggy real fun. Camping the ladder to the Hotel gets a few laughs. Wait until they are just about to the top and boom! But....

Karkand is better.

This map is still imbalanced as hell for MEC side, they can win the game but have to work together very well while the USMC just has to get through and get some flags in the back...it's almost impossible to defend at the beginning, on Karkand you have 3 "paths" to defend, of which 2 aren't used that often but on Road to Jalalabad you get 2 tanks to defend against at the beginning...they are in the first base in 10-20secs and after they have that one the USMC even gets a third tank while other people get into the 4 buggies at the uncappable and just run through to either Hotel/Junkyard/Market or Main MEC base...it's almost impossible to hold of all of them and even if you succeed they'll just try again in 10 seconds. To make this map more balanced they either need to change the rate tickets drop for MEC or cut the USMC out on at least 1 tank and 1-2 buggies in the uncappable.

Nice overvieuw on the map..

I've played it for a while now, trying to find out wether it is better or even as good as Karkland. I don't believe in having to find a favourite map, but more like testing it to the standard Karkland has set for a city map. In the end I agree with most players saying it might be just a little off-balanced, even heard someone say the MEC should work together in order to make a stand. Tried playing MEC for a couple of rounds, and well, my suggestion would be to have less accesibility for tanks inside Jalalalalaaaaabad...Although some corners and roads to flags are narrow as it is, I still think with the main base of MEC in mind, it should be less easy to get there by tank, or car for that matter.....Comparing it to Karkland, the roads to mainbase are long, narrow and easily well garded...with the first flag before the bridge to build primary defences.

Now, for Road to Jaaalalaaaabaahd..move the tanks from mainbase MEC to Hotel and Junkyard(like the small RTJ map for USMC) and have some more wrecks blocking the main road to MEC main base, blocking in such ways, the tanks cannot navigate through unless getting themselves in serious problems.

The reason for my post....as I started thinking during the game as commander of MEC...Where would I build my main base......???A Mosque is offcourse important, but if it isn't a strategic place...well...MEC ain't that dumb....

Still, my end verdict, I like the map...many options for different kits to play, and a map that is surely opening options to work together in squads more, kill all them lone rangers and have a nice picknick by the waterside in the end....

I'd like to think that i got pretty close in describing the state of play in certain areas with regards to sniping, and descriptions.

I have only played it a few times in a full server, but to me its grenade, grenade, grenade, Tank, grenade, grenade, sniped, grenade, grenade, grenade, Road kill. Just like Karkand.

Hope i was reasonably accurate in my descriptions.

This map is TERRIBLE for Infantry only. MEC has a HUGE advantage. USMC is stuck walking across an open desert trying to cap a mec spawn point. Wow I wonder who's going to win that battle?

True. I feel though with vehicles, its a US favoured map though.

Especially cause of the uncap.

The vehicle version is ok, but the infy only version is a fucking sniper fest.  32 per team and all but 3 were sniper.  Its the AWP map of BF2.  But +1 for the guide, I just despise the infy only version of the map.

My personal opinion of the map, is that Dice went crazy with the fire button...
