After reading a post from k30dxedle on another thread, I decided to do a bit of investigating to see if I could find a bit more information on some of the maps we play.  It turns out most of the maps are located in real places, although the names of certain valleys and cities might not have the exact map name.  Anyway, here is what I've found:

Gulf Of Oman- A real gulf, and the map is located somewhere along its coast.
http://encarta.msn.com/map_701512838/Oman_Gulf_of.html

Daqing Oilfield- Daqing is actually the largest oilfield in China.
http://www.daqing.com/english/

Songhua Stalemate- Located somwhere along the Songhua River in China
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songhua_River

Dalian Plant- Dalian is actually a real city in China.

Wake Island- As most of you know, Wake Island was held by the Japanese in WWII, and was eventually taken over by the Allies later in the war.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wake_Island

Sharqi Peninsula- The map is located somwhere along the Persian Gulf, although there is no real place called "Sharqi Peninsula"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_Gulf

Zatar Wetlands- Although no place named "Zatar Wetlands" really exists, the map is supposed to take place along the coastline of the Red Sea.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Sea

Dragon Valley- Takes place in a valley in the Minshan Mountain Range in China. Although no "Dragon Valley" really exists, this is where the map is located.

Operation Clean Sweep- The map takes place in the entrance of the Persian Gulf.

These are just some of the maps in the game, not to mention the Special Forces, Euro Forces, and Armored Fury maps, that also take place in real places. Now, not ALL of the maps are located in real places, such as Karand and Mashtuur City are made up citys supposed to be located in the Middle East. Anyway, thought you guys would find that pretty interesting. Pretty neat to know where we are playing

wow, alot of people said all the maps were made up after the failed quest for Karkand. I would give you +1 but I have no more karma points.

Hm, not sure.  Guess I just wasn't thinking about it.  Spent 15 minutes finding the information, then just clicked new thread, didn't think about replying to his.  Leet hacks?

there is no nuclear plant in or near the city of dalian. china operates 3 nuclear plants and their locations are widely known.

i would guess that zatar wetlands refer to the large marshes in the south of iraq. the area is famous for its 'marsh arabs' who live in a sort of venice-made-of-reeds.

it has been proposed that karkand is based on the city of fallujah, and mashtuur is based on baghdad.

Its being bulit currently.

Following the operational start-ups of 11 nuclear reactors in the south and east, China next year will begin building two nuclear plants which contain two reactors each, in Northeast China's Liaoning Province and East China's Shandong Province.

The Liaoning plant, consisting of two 1,080-MW (megawatt) reactors, will cost US$2.8 billion. It will be the first nuclear base in Northeast China, located at Hongyanhe, the coastal city of Dalian, a senior official from China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (CGNPG) said.

"We expect to get the final go-ahead (to build the Dalian nuclear plant) from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) by the end of this year," said the official, who did not want to be identified.

CGNPG sources last week said that they plan to start the Dalian project as soon as possible.

The Dalian nuclear plant is scheduled to generate electricity in 2011, the company official said.
