Before you decide AMD or Intel you should read this article over at Anandtech.

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/sh … spx?i=2795

It's a pretty sane look at Intel's Conroe chips (core 2) which just hit the shelves. Its 19 pages though, here is a summary below

Intel's Core 2 Extreme X6800 didn't lose a single benchmark in our comparison; not a single one. In many cases, the $183 Core 2 Duo E6300 actually outperformed Intel's previous champ: the Pentium Extreme Edition 965. In one day, Intel has made its entire Pentium D lineup of processors obsolete. Intel's Core 2 processors offer the sort of next-generation micro-architecture performance leap that we honestly haven't seen from Intel since the introduction of the P6.

Compared to AMD's Athlon 64 X2 the situation gets a lot more competitive, but AMD still doesn't stand a chance. The Core 2 Extreme X6800, Core 2 Duo E6700 and E6600 were pretty consistently in the top 3 or 4 spots in each benchmark, with the E6600 offering better performance than AMD's FX-62 flagship in the vast majority of benchmarks. Another way of looking at it is that Intel's Core 2 Duo E6600 is effectively a $316 FX-62, which doesn't sound bad at all.
I'm an AMD fan for years now but if I were building a new rig I'd be seriously considering Core 2.  My only reservation at this point would be the maturity of the motherboards and drivers this early on.

As far as the ATI Nvidia question (ATI fan myself), despite what people say both are very competitive at the top of thier lines. Buy a top of the line card from either and you will NOT be disappointed.

The problem is that they turn the other settings off or down.  Yes, when you want to benchmark a CPU in gaming you don't want to have the video card become a bottleneck, but the settings used do not tend to reflect the actual settings that people will use when they game.  Once you actually turn on the AA/AF and other settings that most people take advantage of, especially after spending $400+ on a new high-end card, the speed becomes mostly determined by video card speed, not CPU speed.

Your Dell would lose to any solidly built custom rig, so would nearly any Alienware ... in price and performance.

Hey, cyborg, have you heard anything about this "Conroe" thing?  I think AMD is coming out with it or something ........

While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

yes I know that.  I was being sarcastic as Cyborg seems to have a slight obsession with it.  They are initially releasing the Extreme Edition, so yeah - get ready to sell your first born I'd imagine.

Ha, ok.

I remember what happened last time I was told that something would be released in the next few weeks...

Next thing I know, Half Life 2 got delayed another year and a half

Yeah, close to a grand at the top end but that E6600 is looking pretty sweet at $316.  Not a bad price for a cpu that can hang with an FX62.

EDIT:  By the way for any who were not aware, Conroe was intel's code name for these new chips.  the marketing name is Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme.  I know that's confused a lot of people.  Conroe = Core 2

At this point in the game, I would wait.  Is it worth a month or so to be sure you get the best bang for your buck?  Let the new intels start rolling out and see how the off the shelf ones get reviewed (as well as the price points).

thanks for posting the price range shotyoursix, i forgot to post it

E6600 runs at the same speed of an FX60 whilse E6400 can run as fast as X2 4600+

for about graphics being a bottleneck... we all know that AA and AF becomes bottleneck to the video card, but if your running at 1280X1024 resolution the bottlneck will become the CPU. and when you SLI, the bottleneck yet again is the CPU

You are basing your choice of CPU on the size of MONITOR you will have next year?  Man....thats gotta be a first.

Most people base their CPU choice on the size of budget they have and just leave the whole monitor thing right out of the equation.....

EDIT: OK you got me.....you were joking right?

Why are people saying amd.
Wait for conroe and it will make amd look like dog shit on a hot summer day.
Search in google and find the benchmarks, conroe beat amd on every test and conroe also set some world records.
