let me put it this way.

what punk music i've heard i haven't liked. i get bored. it lacks subtlety and musical substance. it lacks enjoyment.

so what reason do i have to keep listening to it? maybe there are punk musicians who can really shred, but is it still punk music then? and can they really stand up to the yngwies and satrianis?

This is like comparing Steve Vai to Eric Clapton, one extremely fast and one extremely slow, two virtuosos, two completely different styles, neither can do what the other can, watch Tom Morello, especially when he played for Rage Against the Machine, and tell Satriani to do that.

I got really really sick of the mainstream about five years ago and for a while I went through post-grunge before settling in indie rock. I don't really care what other people listen to, for me its pretty much, if you like it, that's cool, listen to it. My own favourites at the moment are Belle and Sebastian (who I saw live a month back... so so awesome), The New Pornographers, The Shins, Architecture In Helsinki, Muse, among many many others.
Oh and Sigur Ros are goddam amazing. Ditto Bjork.

Music died in about 1995.  The no talent assclowns that are popular today drive me insane.  I can't stand to listen a radio station that plays the music that is on the "Top 40" now.  It's wretched, vile, excrement.  How on earth someone like Britney Spears, Kayne West, Eminem, and their ilk ever became popular is a cancer to our civilization.

oh and for the record, rap/hiphop > punk. punk is antimelodic musical nonsense. take away the 'cooler than you' political undertones, and punk loses all of its appeal. i've yet to hear a punk guitar player who knows how to play more than three chords in a row.

the more you learn, the more you learn to appreciate.
Anitmelodic musical nonsense?  Tell that to the Ramones & Sex Pistols fans out there, as well as the thousands of band members that have picked up an instument after hearing them.  Greenday, Blink 182, Sum41, Nirvana(listen to their early stuff and tell me that punk didn't influence them), and other so called punk bands that have crossed over into top 40.  Why have they crossed? Perhaps it was the melody and beat that became so popular with the mainstream?

What's with the whole assumption music needs to be uber predictable anyway? Try experimental Jazz or anything that was in any way related to Mike Patton!

As for Nirvana, they weren't influenced by punk so much as the riot girl bands in the 80s.

Anyway this whole thread is just about people saying *their* type of music is the *only* type of music.

Saying that punk guitar players only play 3 chords is like saying rappers don't sing. MISSING THE POINT!

thank you, and yes you present a very good arguement and so does kr@cker, but what should be looked into alittle more closely (IN MY OPINION) is this;

How many of these "artists" actually write their own music on MTV today, To me if you can write it, not just the lyrics but all the sheet music for every instrament, then you truely are a musician or Artist.  Most of these people are Preformers.. but back to the thread. WHAT SONG PISSES YOU OFF?

Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd for that matter, I'm in the home town of the Allman Bros, and the music around here quit evolving with them, and they play that song about 3 times a day on the only station I can get at work. They play the same songs into the ground every day.

BTW, I was just trying to save the time of listing 96% of MTV's entire playlist with that earlier post, but I can list them individually if you want.

edit; HA! krappy posted while I was writing!

Exactly my point, why butcher the original with this utter, utter SHITE!

And granted, overplaying of any song renders it crap. First time I heard Californication, great song, the 1000000th time, I'm fucking fed up of hearing this shit!

what is music? do things have to be complex to be music? do they have to be played in a certain way? when does something change from being just noize to music? i like anything thats real, i hate music of any type thats jumping on the bandwagon -quite literally, or attention seeking for ego... but thats preferance..

its about saying what you wana say with words or progressions - or whatever..  just aslong as your making your own music and not rehashing some1 elses i dont care

it is true that alot of groups now including rap just conform to the record labels - we want this please cos its selling kinda thing...

but if you put heart into it, tapping a spoon on jam jars and humming the a-team theme is real? who knows

Make a list of the top 100 stereotypical southern/classic rock songs and imagine listening it all day every day since you were 8 years old (my age when I moved to Macon, Georgia) and you'll have a pretty good idea of what I go through. I'm hearing "back in black" for the second time today alone, cuz someone requested it for "electric lunch". BTW, I'm 29 now.
