Am currently downloading windows vista public beta 2. I chose the 32 bit version (though my procoessor - Intel Pentium D 320 can support 64 Bit - i think). Should i go for the 64 Bit version instead? Does it make any difference?

Also, to install i just burn an ISO, boot and install in a partition right? What size partion would u reccomend?

Could i install the office 12 beta with the vista beta (on same partition)?

Also thought this was quite funny, its over a 3GB download and windows says its making good progress downloading it at -10 % and it only seems to be going backwards from there! And its not like ive got a slow connection, 2MBps with a stead dl rate of around 200kbps!

Anyone else got it running? Any comments?

Thanks for any input

between 32bit and 64bit I don't think it really matters, I will probably just stick with 32bit here as well.  I would probably do a 15gb-20gb partition, that should be enough to test any programs that you may want.

I guess you could try the office12 beta, as long as it can be installed on vista.

Get the 64 bit im a Vista beta tester, you would want to get the 64-bit version if you have a 64bit chip! 32 bit slow as hell!!!

Thanks for the reply.

Oh yeh what about AV? If i have the 32 bit version then any normal AV app should work with it right?

This will probably be a n00b question, as its new windows there are no viruses for it so i dont need AV? I doubt this as its all built on the same technology, right?

Can I dual boot between XP and Vista? I don't want to format my C: and make a partition.

How much space does Vista take up?

Yeah, I know how big the download is, it says right there. I'm just more curious as to the actual space I'll need free on my C: drive to install it.

Thanks cyborg.

I installed at 3 am and set aside a 25gb partition once completed...it took an hour and 7 mins I had 12 gb free...but this was because it automatically backs up you exsisting data and profiles if you install into a partition with a previous istallation of windows..

Once you have trasnfered the info you need from the previous installation and delete the backup I was left 18 gb free so Vista took 7gb give or take for formating waste..

Hope this helps

;D

Been playing with Vista in VMWare, seems ok.. some things (like UAC, the first thing disabled) are really annoying.

Going to dig into it in further detail, I hate the missing status bars. I like my status bars goddamnit.
Will repartition my system and setup Vista under the second partition when I get time.

I hate it how there is no easy way to disable windows defender, i've got enough intelligence not to be infected by spyware.

There seems to be a lot of background tasks crud.

I've heard there is a performance hit for games, i'd probably put that down to memory since vista eats it up.

Believe it or not I was able to run BF2 on a 64Bit version of vista.  It worked for 5 mins then I quit.  I did a single player game only and the update for the game woudl not work.  So I do plan on download this copy and getting it work.  Would anyone like me to keep a blog on my progress or is there another thread on this subject?

i just installed the 64x version tonight.

i dont mind it at all.

i installed it on a seperate hdd to my xp install, it doesnt give me the option of what os to run when i start up.

it just logs onto vista by defualt? not that i really car as i can access all my folders on my xp hdd but it would still be nice to log onto xp.

anyone know why?

It'll be simpler to use this thread to post any findings.  The thread name is generic enough to include software compatibility issues and findings.

Since you mentioned BF2 ran without any problem (yet), let's start collecting a bunch of software names that is known to work with Vista w/o any issue as well as the ones that are problematic.  To make these things easier to notice, we'll need a proper formatting setup.  Like so...

* Application name -- WORKING, NOT WORKING, PARTIALLY WORKING (description of why it is not working or possible issues that may prohibit from using all of the software's features)

In the event that this thread becomes insanely large, this is to ensure that those who do tinker with it or have plans to install Vista will be able to find out whether a software works or not.  At least it's better to be prepared.

hrm... does Vista continue to use the classic NTLDR style of booting?  I know that NT can have multiple installs of NT/2000/XP all separated and defined using a boot.ini file.  I kinda wonder if it's still the same.  The boot.ini file is a read-only system (or hidden, or both) file and you may have to adjust the file viewing and its permission to see/edit it.
