i think metal fandom is a lot more than that: you're as usual being incredibly cynical about something utterly harmless. but if it makes you feel good, i guess? you would have accused me of snobbery if i had said the same things 15 years ago – you know, when one was of a somewhat more reasonable age for callow posturing and the taking up of strident positions on matters of no moment.

metal isn't exactly culturally relevant anymore, there aren't any 'in groups' or 'cool kids' parading around and scaring the nerds and nebs. they've been silo'd off into their own niche in the great post-postmodern simmering down of all subcultures into algorithmic mush. there's something quaint, almost endearing even, about their commitment to a way of life and identity like that. modern metal as a tribe seems to be very inclusive and more or less 'woke', too. gentle giants rather than sneering punks with their jacket patches.

didn't one of your children's entertainers from those comic movies you love act as the major domo of the last BS gig?

i know it's not popular with the kids, i'm not an eejit. you don't have to be a schoolteacher to read the culture.

it's niche, but i find it hard to punch down in good faith on any subculture keeping alive its own icons, canon, traditions, etc. thesedays. the concept of a subculture itself is going the way of the dodo. and what gen-z are replacing it with is not better. it is, in fact, far worse. let the metalheads roam the wilds like cassowaries with their primped haircuts and atavistic moshing.

That's wild to me. As a kid skunk was the worst smell, it's still bad but not as awful as an adult.

i'll take skunks over your murder-hobo kangaroos and xenomorph-fanged spiders. drive out far enough and the beavers are a bigger menace to towns than the bears in washington.
