I think you can just play BF2 now, if you download some server something.
I was toying with the idea of machining some BF2S trophy things and sending them out.

Bf2 does still indeed work. I have it installed but don't play.
I have it installed, there are still some servers somewhere which you can access if you download some patch.

They were recently down for a few weeks but just got it fixed within the past few days
