I remember seeing something like that on stack exchange. Setting aside the math, I think someone stated that a meteor from within the solar system would probably be moving slow enough to spot. Something showing up from the outside though is anyone's guess?

they're also really hard to spot even when we do have telescopes trained on that patch of the sky. they travel extremely fast, don't have to be very big, and are not exactly light-emitting.

It kind of depends, but for most people throughout most of history diets were more plant based, at least in settled agricultural societies. This is not a rule though, as several populations and subsets of the population did eat large quantities of fish and meat, mostly depending on occupation and habitat. In any case: in developed societies, grains, beans, potatoes etc were usually the bedrock of the food economy and staples for large parts of the population.

I do suspect consumption of meats, fish and foods in general is systematically underestimated by historians - the history I read on food consumption always gave daily diets and calorie counts that did not seem realistic at all. If I remember right, average medieval peasants would be eating oats and drinking mead most of the day in modest servings. Yet as we know, hard physical labour really requires you to eat a ton of food. You easily burn upwards of 4000 or even 5000 calories a day if you're hauling bricks and tilling fields. Easiest way to get there is lots of animal products/proteins. I suspect eggs and poultry were diet staples, and only recently have we discovered that cities like Pompeii for example had dozens if not hundreds of ancient fast food stalls serving just those sorts of things.

Dietary & cooking history is one of my favourite niche history topics tbh. You learn so much about life of the past by looking at people's food consumption, it also helps it come alive.

Sick birds usually appear easily approachable, and might also have fluffed out feathers. If you observe a sick bird, Mansfield said that the best course of action is to leave it alone — salmonella bacteria can be passed from bird to human through direct contact.

Domestic cats who catch the birds may also become sick. The Seattle Audubon Society recommends keeping cats indoors for the winter.
