stonehenge wasn't constructed by engineers, either, for your information. i've published a 660-page tome on stonehenge and spent half a year of my life reading about the fucking minutiae of the place, both in archaeological and mythological contexts. sorry, but you also can't claim that for 'engineers' at your whim.

it's funny that you can say 'hurr durr how can anyone insult engineers when you have iphones', whilst also sitting in a western society that is the legacy of 2000 years of christianity. there are no two ways about it, that almost everything that governs your family life, your values, your basic ethical presuppositions, has in some way been influenced by christianity. secular liberalism did not spring out of a rock. whoosh! over your head.

Just think where we'd be if the jews had stopped whining and got on with it.

For a start we'd have more pyramids.
also jews did not build the pyramids lmao. i love that you think this is literal history.

remember when you claimed the jews had no rights to israel/jerusalem because they were from egypt? l m a o.

Can a meteor big enough to destroy Earth travel so fast we don't see it coming?

I remember seeing something like that on stack exchange. Setting aside the math, I think someone stated that a meteor from within the solar system would probably be moving slow enough to spot. Something showing up from the outside though is anyone's guess?

It's not that it would be traveling so fast we don't see it coming, it's that by the time we identified it and it's trajectory it could be too late.

We don't have telescopes beaming out into every direction. The NEOWISE comet was discovered 3 months before it's flyby. That should tell you something

they're also really hard to spot even when we do have telescopes trained on that patch of the sky. they travel extremely fast, don't have to be very big, and are not exactly light-emitting.

Do you think we will manage to get people to Mars and back within the 2030's like NASA plans?

Fun stuff.

I like the little jab he got at that stupid Chernobyl show, too.

I know people are omnivores but are we more carnivores or herbivores? Humans burn a lot of energy especially our brain. Meat eaters get more energy from their food than from fruits and vegetables. So a mostly meat diet would be more productive?

It kind of depends, but for most people throughout most of history diets were more plant based, at least in settled agricultural societies. This is not a rule though, as several populations and subsets of the population did eat large quantities of fish and meat, mostly depending on occupation and habitat. In any case: in developed societies, grains, beans, potatoes etc were usually the bedrock of the food economy and staples for large parts of the population.

I do suspect consumption of meats, fish and foods in general is systematically underestimated by historians - the history I read on food consumption always gave daily diets and calorie counts that did not seem realistic at all. If I remember right, average medieval peasants would be eating oats and drinking mead most of the day in modest servings. Yet as we know, hard physical labour really requires you to eat a ton of food. You easily burn upwards of 4000 or even 5000 calories a day if you're hauling bricks and tilling fields. Easiest way to get there is lots of animal products/proteins. I suspect eggs and poultry were diet staples, and only recently have we discovered that cities like Pompeii for example had dozens if not hundreds of ancient fast food stalls serving just those sorts of things.

Dietary & cooking history is one of my favourite niche history topics tbh. You learn so much about life of the past by looking at people's food consumption, it also helps it come alive.

In general, eating bad (whether you eat meat or not) will have an adverse effect on your body. Sweeping claims like "meat is good for you" or "meat is bad for you" are vastly oversimplified. There's still a lot of ongoing research anyway. In general, I tend to vegetarian dishes, sticking with eggs and milk for animal products, and have done so for some years. On a social note, I got a lot more crap and juvenile hassle for it than I'd ever seen meat eaters get from vegetarians or vegans. Took a couple years for that to finally die down.

Useful site I keep on my phone, might as well put some effort into shopping:

https://www.cornucopia.org/scorecards/

Written around creatine, an article on Scientific American (https://www.scientificamerican.com/arti … our-brain/) from 2019 points out the difficulty in proving cause and effect between meat and non-meat diets, and cites other factors at play that could be improving or worsening health. I would assume the best balance for now would be to build whatever diet you want around supplements and preferably foods that will give you recommended nutrients. A vegetarian can live to be a ripe old age and still be as sharp as ever, it all just depends.

Re: "let the cats kill birds"

Sick birds usually appear easily approachable, and might also have fluffed out feathers. If you observe a sick bird, Mansfield said that the best course of action is to leave it alone — salmonella bacteria can be passed from bird to human through direct contact.

Domestic cats who catch the birds may also become sick. The Seattle Audubon Society recommends keeping cats indoors for the winter.

A house cat doesn't need to be on a vegan diet to be kept away from the wild bird population.

I was a kid but you're right I should have pushed the family for a pit bull because image.

e: I should add that no, Taco Bell's mascot had nothing to do with it. And for dilbert's interest, it turned out to be a perfect size to roughhouse with the cat.
e2: I should add that it was a wonderful, energetic little dog. Didn't feel "emasculated" at all. I'd be happy to take care of another chihuahua if I were to get another dog, but I don't really see them at the shelters much.
