wait until intel conroe cpus come out, cheapest one is 186 usd that runs as fast as a 300dollar+amd athalon X2
get a conroe supported mobo (G965 at that time), 2 X1gb ddr2 ram at around 180 bucks, keep old hdds and use a new gfx card at least a 7600gt (230?)
well its really hard right now since intel doesnt produce any more of those products, a 2.2 northwood would do._j5689_ wrote:

You should repost that link to the parts thing and July 23rd, people seem to like knowing it.
I didn't even realize this one had such great cache speed compare to the others, I was just taken in by the price, lol. Glad I continued to look, I almost bought a used piece of shit on eBay._j5689_ wrote:

My mobo doesn't do 533MHz, only 400.
I don't use a PCI video card if you're still unconvinced.cyborg_ninja-117 wrote:
well... u can try underclocking... i would save up for a whole year and get a really cheap conroe setup. i wouldnt upgrade so much in ur situation since ur if u upgrade sumthing, sumthing else will always be the bottleneck_j5689_ wrote:

What do you mean by "cheap" Conroe? How many different speeds are they making and for what bus speeds?
well, the motherboard will cost the most, theres a board out there from aopen that has ddr2 and ddr support, so its easier to switch. but i would wait till later if u dont have the cash. btw conroe cpu wont work on ANY existing boards... except for the aopen one and intel bad axe 975x._j5689_ wrote:

cheapest conroe now is 183 dollars 1.83ghz and 1066 fsb, but later in the year there will be like a celeron edition w/ 800mhz fsb... probly like around 120ish, the price is still un announced

By then I should have a job anyway.
the budget is $160. I don't see how putting a bandaid on it would be very good. I mean he would basically be adding 600mhz to his computer... whoopdidoo. It would be far better to save up for a few months (or however long it takes) and get something that will give an actual performance increase. From what I can tell he may see an increase of 10-15 fps, which is some, but not comparable to a jump of 30-50 if he would spend the little extra and save.Snipedya14 wrote:

I sure hope you dont work in the IT Field, Always trying to sell more, you are going to have alot of angry customers.
You suggested a new system, thats fine, makes sense. But he said no, and you keep suggesting new systems. Now conroe has been mentioned. I mean WTF?
Will that heatsink/fan fit with the airduct above the heatsink/fan area or do you think I will have to remove the duct for the new fan to fit?
Year: 2001- 2002, I don't know if year really matters, I just thought this would be handy.

Considering the fact he is most likely going to need to rebuy windows (im thinking this is an OEM build) Get a new mobo, video card, and CPU. As well as A new PSU. That may be a bit out of this kids reach.Janus67 wrote:

I was simply stating that, If you are working on a call, and they want Random Part A, and you suggest an upgrade 2x-3x the orignal budget, and they say no...you cant keep badgering them about it.
Why not drop 80 bucks to keep the system over till a birthday/other holiday where he can get a major upgrade.

EDIT: I dont see a duct on that pic? Looks like everything will work fine. And yea...a can of air to take out that dust wouldnt hurt.

Oh my god. Your CPU fan is completely encrusted with dust. How does it even spin?!
I once took it out about two months ago and kinda rinsed a tiny bit of dust out of the heatsink, and now I can actually hear the fan running, lol.
