There's a whole level of the film you wouldn't have noticed.
What did I miss? The movie deliberately had scenes that spelled out where this is going when showing scenes of Ryan Gosling's character flashing back his memories. The entire storyline was dull(and the sequel hook, meh) and I was bored throughout the film. I wanted to like this movie... but I can't.
Well, since I don't want to spoil it for Ken:
Spoiler (highlight to read):
Even if Ken is a colossal dick.
Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 basically ask the question "What is it to be human?"
Is it enough to live, does it take more - to love, to create life, to be who you were intended to be, to achieve more, to die, to accept your mortality, to fight against it, to care and sacrifice for your fellow man, etc
The long pauses where not very much happens are for you to absorb and reflect on what the film-maker is trying to say.

Anyone watching Westworld right now? Anyone think the whole storyline introduced last night is dumb?

Thats the question the series is asking, similar to Blade Runner, what is consciousness?
Why can't a human consciousness put into a machine be conscious when a robot mind in a humanoid body can become conscious through its own development.

There is no magical 'soul', we are a complex organic machine with some well-developed algorithms which enable our DNA to replicate, and while our DNA is immortal we aren't.

I am not saying a robot can't achieve consciousness. I am saying that consciousness is the result of having a working brain. You destroy your brain, and your consciousness is gone with it. It is a single unit. The dead guy is still dead and his consciousness is gone regardless if there is a robot around with a consciousness of its own.

I am rewatching the Sopranos on Amazon Prime. Last time I watched the whole thing I was a teenager.

Being a little older now, I appreciate and understand it a little better. The one glaring or grating thing is how much of a fuck up Christopher, Tony's nephew, is. Like he ruins every opportunity given to him. He really squandered his life and it is interesting seeing that happen day to day with him.

I've started watching Blackish recently. It's not bad. Actually laughed aloud several times, which is very unusual for a TV show.

I am angry at what the History channel has become. I bought a subscription to the History Vault, basically online access to old history channel documentaries for my classes. But there are hundreds of old videos and shows missing. They have literally nothing on the great depression and stock market crash.

And their actual website is full of Google ads. Slowest shit ever.

True detective season 3: 7/10. It would have been a 9/10 if the season finale wasn't the biggest letdown in the world.

Game of thrones has been off of TV for so long and the last seasons sucked so bad that I kind of don't even care anymore. I will watch it but through hype is gone. I haven't even watched the trailers.

I'm cautiously hyped despite not watching trailers. I am just very interested to see how they attempt to tie the story up in only 6 episodes.

it's fantasy - tying up the story doesn't really matter.  It will end with "and then everyone was killed" or they will leave some terrible open ended story line so they can continue to milk the IP character by character.

I am confused why you are saying the genre means there won't be a conclusion. I understand why HBO could want to do that, and I could see some spin-off in that universe coming into being, but it seems very unlikely for them to Marvel it.

The show will end with George R. R. Martin doing a public service announcement about how everyone should read the books to see the ending followed by news reports that after nearly ten years between novels the author has died from obesity related heart disease.

I think I'm just going to stick with season 1 of most shows unless there is a definite conclusion somewhere at the end.

i'm just taking the piss. I don't particularly enjoy reading (or watching) fantasy or sci-fi stuff in general, so most of my exposure to the genre is from one of my older brothers. He would re-read the same novels every year, and then add the latest release to his list. These types of books tend to have >10 in a series, and seemingly go on forever.

Imagine codifying and serializing your weekly D&D quests for the last 10 years, paying special attention to adding little easter eggs years later about that one time Garathea of Parthegon, trudging along the barren karst, stumbled across an ancient bone relic leftover from the Bruzokt Wars.  1000 years later - Guess what! That bone relic was the remains of a pygmy dragonlance slain by none other than Garathea of Parthegon's grandfather, the level 60 mage Baratheo, who used a cloudy periwinkle time-traveling potion to fight alongside his kin in the ultimate battle for existence against those from the nether regions.

I used to find it sort of funny when a book would take a stroll down a convoluted path like that and then suddenly snap back to the main story with the almost self-aware admission that it was extraneous and not relevant or even incidental to plot progression. Gets a little heavy-handed at times though.

I've read my fair share of fantasy. I liked it a lot when I was younger but honestly couldn't see myself sitting down to read it now. I've had the last three WoT books sitting on my shelf for years now and I can't bring myself to take them down and finish the damn series that I invested so much time in (roughly 9,000 pages). I just don't have time to read another 2,500 pages ghost written after the author is dead.

I started reading Martin's books about a decade before Game of Thrones came out and I've waited 8 years for the latest one so far.

Some sci-fi is cool, I got into Asimov and Heinlein and Card for a while.

william gibson, j g ballard and philip k dick once in a blue moon can do a good service to sci-fi. fantasy is a much tougher sell.
