It's a nonsensical pic from the beginning, since they left out smaller markets just to make it seem like there were MORE gun stores.west-phoenix-az wrote:

I pass way more supermarkets than retail gun shops.
Spoiler (highlight to read):
i remember the good old days when almost every supermarkets sold guns and ammo
They also left out Canada, which has more guns per capita than we do

The survey counted all registered gun dealers and only large supermarkets - so obviously its skewed.
I was more interested that France and Germany seem to have a lot of guns and comparably few shootings.
I hear sales of AR15s have gone through the roof - nice.

Well we all knew that there would be irritating propaganda from both sides after this burst of American massacre. And over it all, the media circles like vultures.
ARs are extremely popular here and for good reason. When people think there is going to be a ban they rush to get them. Magazine are also selling out all over.Dilbert_X wrote:

Obama: best gun salesman ever
Dick's Sporting Goods announced on Tuesday that it would be pulling its stock of "modern sporting rifles" from its shelves
Walmart has stopped selling the Bushmaster AR-15 assault rifle
We put heavy restrictions military-style guns after one massacre in the 90s, and have tightened the definition of "military-style" since then several times. It hasn't stopped bad people from getting such guns, and hasn't stopped gun crime. Just over 1 million guns between 4.3 million people I believe. We also have what claims to be the world's largest dedicated gun store, in fact I drove past it couple of days ago.

If that's your fear, keep the gunsafe in your bedroom.
The function of a gun cabinet (or safe) is to lock up your guns so they aren't stolen when you're gone. You could take them out as soon as you walk in the door. Yes, this means you'd have to go through extra effort to take the gun out of the cabinet. But the argument "what happens if someone breaks in and my guns are all locked up, dummy" can be refuted by that simple reasoning.
Also, I'm at work and can't watch the video so I assumed that was the argument. Feel free to correct me or tell me I'm an idiot if I'm wrong.

They probably just suspended their sales so they can jack up the prices to some crazy level. That's what they do.http://www.facebook.com/cheaperthandirt … 5765484324

CWP's for teachers that qualify and want it. And arm the ROTC man.
Also arm the Principal (CWP or gunsafe). They are the true first responder in that situation. Hell or high water, that principal was going into that classroom to try and stop that dick. She didn't have the proper tools to even have a semblance of a chance due to anti-gun legislation.\

Pretty damn eloquent.Mike Huckabee wrote:
I’ve said some controversial things from time to time, but none which prompted such a backlash as when I stated that the horrific shooting in CT of school children and teachers couldn’t be blamed on God because we’ve systematically marginalized God out of our culture by removing Him from all aspects of the public square. The vicious attacks that have resulted, most of all of which are based on total ignorance of what I actually said have actually validated my point, but I’m quite certain that was not the intent of both the professional and amateur critics who have demanded everything from my being banned from ever speaking in public again, or wished me a slow and painful death. On that alone, I wish to acknowledge that the left has again shown that it defines tolerance and diversity as being tolerant only of that with which it agrees, and diverse only to include slight shades of the orthodoxy of liberalism to which they adhere. They abhor censorship of their own profanity, obscenities, or graphic violence, but are the first to demand that a voice that invokes the name of God to be silenced. A specific act of violence is rarely the result of a specific single act of a culture that prompts it. In other words, I would never say that simply taking prayer and Bible reading from our institutions or silencing Christmas carols is the direct cause of a mass murder. That would be ludicrous and simplistic. But the cause and effect we see in the dramatic changes of what our children are capable of is a part of a cultural shift from a God-centered culture to a self-centered culture. We have glorified uninhibited self-expression and individualism and are shocked that we have a generation of loners. We have insisted on a society where everyone gets a trophy and no one loses and act surprised that so many kids lack self-esteem and feel like losers. We dismiss the notion of natural law and the notion that there are moral absolutes and seemed amazed when some kids make it their own morality to kill innocent children. We diminish and even hold in contempt the natural family of a father and mother creating and then responsibly raising the next generation and then express dismay that kids feel no real connection to their families or even the concept of a family. We scoff at the need for mothers and fathers to make it their priority to train their children to be strong in spirit and soul and responsible for right and wrong and exalt instead the virtue of having things and providing expensive toys, games, and electronics that substitute for parenting and then don’t understand why our kids would rather have ear buds dangling from their ears, fingers attaching to a smart phone, and face attached to a computer screen than to have an extended conversation with their family at dinner. And we don’t teach them there is a Creator God who sets immutable rules, a God who is knowable, and to whom we are ultimately responsible. Instead we teach that God was not involved in our origins, that our very lives are biological happenstances and in fact are disposable should they be inconvenient to us, and that any outrageous behaviors are not sin, but disorders for which we should be excused and accommodated. I realize my viewpoint sounds out-dated and archaic, but when that world view was the foundation of our nation’s social contract, we got in trouble at school for talking in class, chewing gum, pulling a girl’s pigtails, or slouching in our school desks. We took guns to school, to be sure, but they were in the gun racks of our trucks and we used them to hunt before and after school. It never occurred to us to use them to murder our teachers and fellow students. So yes, I can stand the contempt and criticism of the left. I’ll gladly accept their scorn as they substitute creative language with a steady stream of profanity-laced tirades that I’m an idiot, a throwback to the past, and a person who should be forever silenced. But when we as a nation feared God, we didn’t fear that a 20 year old with a high powered rifle would gun down our children in their schoolrooms.

Why not arm the groundskeeper also, and place barbed wire along all the fences and roving patrols of concerned and also armed citizens.13rin wrote:

I don't know. I like the idea of a cop there more. If it were to boil down to that I would rather see a bit more than your standard cwp, some kind of training on how to deal with that kind of a situation. And not so much in each classroom a safe in the building that could be easily accesed.13rin wrote:

I bolded the important part. If people are willing to take the time and effort to get good training and go through the process to do it, more power to them. We don't know the Principal's views on guns, so let's not speculate on whether she would have been armed without the "gun free zone" farce. (Farce because it is nothing more than a sign and the threat to call the cops/fire you if you violate it.)13rin wrote:

I don't disagree with this, forcing principals to take training. I don't really care if the teacher/principal takes the same type of training a police officer or military would receive - because just handing a teacher a gun isn't going to turn him into random hero. But what happens if/when the principal or teacher gets shot? Sue the school/district/county/state?13rin wrote:

#AMERICAA Utah sixth-grader, who told classmates he was encouraged by his parents to bring a gun to school after the Connecticut school shooting, was apprehended by teachers after he was found with an unloaded .22-caliber handgun, Fox13Now.com reported.
The unidentified student, described in the report as an 11-year-old boy, reportedly pulled the gun from his backpack during recess Monday at West Kearns Elementary School, which is in a suburb of Salt Lake City.
Isabel Rios, a fellow sixth-grader, said the boy pointed the gun at her head and said he was going to kill her, the report said.
Students did not immediately alert teachers about the gun. A district spokesman told the station that once teachers were alerted, the student was "apprehended in 30 to 45 seconds" and brought to the principal's office.

Soldiers go through months upon months of training to learn how to act in a combat situation so when the shit hits the fan they know almost by instinct what to do. Going to a gun range may a great way to learn how to effectively operate a firearm and may improve your accuracy but it's not combat training. Knowing how to shoot isn't the same as knowing how to respond to a situation where a mad bugger is running around shooting anything that moves.
I'm pretty sure it was 13rin who after the Batman shooting mused that it would have been great if one of the movie goers was armed so they could have shot Holmes. I don't get the kind of mentality it takes to think the best thing to add to a gas-and-bullet-filled theatre of panicking screaming people is an inexperienced civilian with yet another gun. Is that what that situation really needed? More bullets flying through the air? Utter lunacy.
And now 13rin is suggesting that the ideal way to counter mad buggers shooting up schools is to arm teachers - hopefully give them some combat training too though. Fucking Hell, teachers teach, that is their job. Already they're put under pressure to know to deal with seizures and allergies as well as ensuring the fat bastards get some exercise. You're saying that now they should carry firearms and have to be bodyguards too? To be the first responder, to engage a suicidal gunman in a firefight? I think a big pay rise should come with this, don't you? But of course, only for those who want to. And what teacher or principal wouldn't want to have that fun responsibility?
Fighting fire with fire is pointless. The fire just gets bigger and everyone gets burned.
Also before I'm accused of anything again I'll reiterate that I don't think guns are the problem I think the gun culture is - and not the huntin' and shootin' side of it, the side that approaches every problem, (including problems associated with guns,) with "use more gun'"

They had an ex-soldier on the tube with the exact same points, Ty. For a teacher to go from showing kids countries on a map to full on Secret Service at the flick of a switch, I don't see that happening. Far too many risks. In the case of Holmes, he was tricked out in body armour, and a teacher making such a rapid switch is likely to panic fire anyway and endanger the kids more.Ty wrote:

The last place that should have guns is a school.
