Every time something like this happens people are like 'we need more gun control'. Ok, what will that do? Nothing. Are you going to ban guns and go house to house searching for contraband guns? No. Please. We just need less suicidal assholes thinking it's ok to take down a bunch of innocent people with them.

I mean, fuck, I blame the 24/7 news coverage for shit like this. Guns have been around for centuries but afaik you didn't have people committing mass murder like this until they knew they would get their name and face on tv for weeks after they killed themselves.

Mass murder predates the 24/7 news cycle. Though it doesn't help.

All I have to say on gun regulation/ban in an attempt to stop incidents like this, is that Timothy McVeigh killed 168 people with god damned fertilizer (and a few other compounds, none of which were illegally obtained). When psychopaths decide to kill people, they will find a way to do so.

Just think, if those 5 yr olds hadn't been liberal faggots they'd have owned five guns each and they could have had an awesome shootout.
Need a better plan people, Murdoch is in favour of gun restrictions so I guess Fox will be pushing for it.

How do you go about achieving that?Jay wrote:

Hollywood has been pushing the message for about half a century that angry outsiders can achieve fame and respect by shooting up dozens of people. Go to a video store and count the number films aimed at adults which don't have someone holding a gun on the cover.

Ohh boy, the liberal anti-gun establishment is already having a field day with this. A gun did not kill those kids. An evil man WITH a gun killed those children. Without a gun, someone demented enough to kill 20 kindergartners would have found another way to visit misery upon those people.
Guns are not evil, people are. Guns are no more evil than a car is in the hands of a drunk driver.

maybe we should focus on making sure guns don't get in the hands of mentally unstable people.
There are 30ish gun deaths in the U.S. every day. Almost all of them among the poor. No one cares.
30 people died today in one not poor place. International headlines.

Certainly not exclusive to the US.
There are way too many of these.

See this argument would work if multiple Western countries had just put in effective gun control regimes in the recent pastJay wrote:

Norway has strict gun control doesn't it? Didn't stop the dude from shooting up the island. England has strict gun control, no? Didn't stop that psycho taxi driver from killing like twenty people. People will get guns and kill other people no matter how many roadblocks you put up to stop them. It doesn't matter if you have a psych evaluation on every person in the country, they can and will still go buy a gun illegally if it's what they really want. Gun control is a feel good sort of thing that is completely ineffective, just like drug prohibition. Sure, it might stop some people from doing something bad, but it won't stop all of them, and when it happens, it will be arguably worse because people are unprepared and complacent because 'we're all safe from guns now!'.Spark wrote:

Murder is generally high in the US, guns or otherwise. US murder rate is 4.2 times higher than Australia, almost 4 times higher than the UK, 2x that of Iraq FFS. You're level with Yemen and Turkmenistan.....

Let the free-market sort it out over a few centuries?

IIRC the UK hasn't had a mass school shooting since Dunblane. Certainly the rate has drop off. Australia hasn't had any since Port Arthur (having had 16 in the previous decade).Jay wrote:

Again, this is all assertion which flies in the face of actual evidence.

There is no solution. You can be a control freak all you want and stick people in padded walled cells but they will still find a way out to do what they want. I know that terrifies you, but people do really have free will and you might have to deal with other peoples bullshit from time to time. The solution here is to stop giving these people the media attention they obviously crave. People want to be remembered when they die, yes? Some people write books to gain immortality. Some people try to conquer the world and have bronze statues cast of themselves. Others commit mass murder so their name is remembered. Stop giving them the satisfaction. Let them die in anonymity.

Again, this would work if I didn't see actual solutions in progress. Give me some actual evidence to demonstrate that the regimes in place do not have effect, otherwise I'll believe you. Otherwise this is just ideological talking points.

You can't prevent them entirely, but you can reduce them.
As for Dunblane, Hamilton was a paedophile who set out to harm children - guns being the most effective tool. Failing that he would have done something like - http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/ho … 23657.html
The shame is Dunblane was treated as a gun problem and not a failure to deal with a dangerous paedophile.
I don't know what the solution is, preventing nutcases getting hold of powerful weapons needs to be part of it, and identifying nutcases early on as theres usually a progression.
