I read differing things. People say reviews had high temps because of high voltages, when lower ones clocked fine.

If you take your head out of the whole "Every new CPU MUST be overclocked to 150% it's starting value!!!" then it seems like a good choice.

Though I do believe in not buying the first batch of new things.

I have seen tests with multiple retail CPUs and they run insanely hot and won't make it much past 4.5GHz even with water. They are cool and have low TDP at stock, but as soon as you touch the voltage (oh and they really need that voltage boost) they start leaking like bucket shot with shotgun.

When you use sub-zero cooling only the sky is limit but with air they are quite the opposite.

Sounds like a good price, they sell at over €500 here. And that is as good as CPUs get.

Below was the killer deal.  I could have gotten a few, but I hesitated and was sold out at the Tustin site in a few hours.

Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz LGA 1155 Quad Core Processor for $199.99

With the Ivy sadfaces, will Sandy's go up in price?

Sandy's will go out of stock, Intel plans to replace them with IBs like them or not. So not so much price drops/ups, they just disappear.

I guess I'll wait for Amazon to have the 3930K creap down a bit in price.  It's only about $50 more when taxes at Microcenter are factored.

Now, a 2011 board.  sigh...

Yeah, I'll need at least 16GB.  Altready have it on my current build.  Major Photoshop, Premiere and 3D modeling work on my todo's.

Question.  Building a triple-screen setup.  I already have a 1600x1200 x3 setup, but will eventually go 24" 1920x(1200/1080) by the end of the year.  I have an eVGA GTX580 1.5.  What are my SLI options?  Can a 580 and 680 SLI?  Or will I have to go 580 x2?  Or just bite the bullet and go 680 x2 or 7970 x2?  Yes, I must play at max/Ultra settings.

Yeah pretty sure they have to be the same model. Although I think it may be different for ATI.

I actually rotated all three lcds 90-degrees, getting 3600x1600.  Vertical was sweet, but I couldn't stand the bars at 1200.

A friend is buying a tri-monitor, 24" 1080p setup with two 680's as soon as Ivybridge comes out (with reviews), so if you're not buying til then, I can tell you how it works for him if you need new cards.

For SLi the cards must be exactly the same (eg GTX580 can only be SLied with another GTX580). With AMD (ATI) you can Crossfire cards of the same GPU series (eg 6970 with 6950 would work. But 6970 with 6870 would not).

So yeah either you pick up a second 580 (which isn't a bad idea since you can get them second hand for decent prices now). Or you go all out and blow $800+ on 2x 680 or 7970.

THAT BEING SAID: It's still not an exact science and is still very buggy. The only way you should do SLI/CF is if you know the card(s) you're getting are exactly the same as the card(s) you have, or you already have the card and are just giving it a shot. Anything else usually isn't worth spending money on.

Dual card setups are generally more prone to issues. But there is no real reason a mixed card crossfire setup would be less likely to work than an identical card setup. Generally the main issue is drivers and game incompatibility, rather than any issues with the cards used.

To be honest, from all indications the vast majority of new dual card setups work just fine. The majority of issues simply seem to be driver related and are usually fixed with a driver update. In fact, I can't remember the last time I heard of a Crossfire or SLI setup where it simply didn't work (and where individually each card worked fine).

Mixed card setups are always more likely to run into driver issues. The more rare your setup is...

Really always get identical cards or prepare to additional problems. If you can't afford identical cards you shouldn't even be looking at multi-GPU anyway.

But when we say "identical cards" what do we really mean? Going so far as to say it has to be exactly the same manufacturer? model? batch?

While i'm not saying there are no issues, I put my mates HD6950 in crossfire with my HD6970 and it worked with no problems. While the rarer the setup, the more potential for problems exists. In most cases I would say if there is going to be a driver problem, there will be regardless of whether your cards are identical or not. Plenty of games have had issues across the board on SLI and crossfire, not simply non-identical setups.

As for being able to afford them. I don't see how that is the issue. If I wanted to Crossfire my HD6970, money is not an issue at all and yet chances are it would be extremely difficult to get an identical card to mine at this stage. There are plenty of reasons that someone might not be using identical cards, not that they "can't afford" it.
